The Jorgensen has designed all new bench planes and other wood planes using premium materials and workmanship. Precisely made, fit and finished, these planes are ready right out of the box and minimum honing is required. Heavy gauge (3.0mm) O1 blade is more durable and provides a solid cut with minimal vibration. Ductile iron is far stronger and more resilient. Stress relieving metal ensures the machined casting will stay flat over time.

A block plane that is worth the effort to refine

The new plane was well packaged. When opened it had a layer of oil on all parts. This is a good thing as it prevents rust from forming on planes when they are shipped. A few minutes with a rag and solvent of your choice will remove oil. I then disassemble the entire plane. Using a file I removed any burs or paint that would impede the function of the plane. This was most important on the adjustable mouth as both paint and burs restricted movement of the mouth. Next I checked the blade back to see if it was flat. It wasn’t flat enough for my standards. So I used a combination of sandpaper on a flat surface as well as diamond plates to flatten the blade. The blade is too roughly ground. Jorgensen should send these out ground to a finer grit. Next I sharpen and honed the blade. The sharpening is to rough out of the box Jorgensen. Are you listening? You need to finish the blade to a finer grit. Anyway next I lapped the sole of the plane. The plane was concave in the middle. Also the sole was rough enough I could actually hear my fingernail scraping as I ran it over the sole. Again Jorgensen are you listening? You need to finish the sole to a finer grit. Nonetheless my lapping produced a flat sole. I then took a file and broke all the sharp edges on the sole. So as you can see some fine tuning is required but well worth it considering what you are getting. Oil all ductile iron parts as the plane can rust easily if exposed to moisture. The plane feels good in the hand. I’m not sure how long or well the zinc or aluminum cap iron will hold up over time but we shall see. Jorgensen has done about 80% of the work on this plane. It’s up to you to do the rest. Once done you should have a fine tool for your woodworking arsenal. I found both planes I own to exhibit the same problems. So now you know what to correct. Overall a block plane worth having.

Cuts decently after correcting the blade which had a dent on the edge. Sharpened it shaves well and is easy to adjust, however the sole is not flat. Right edge of mouth is proud of the sole and sole in general has a cup. After 30 minutes of sanding on 300 grit it’s still a ways out. You can see the areas that are not getting touched sanding this on float glass.

So, I saw this on the shelf at Lowe's and had been looking for a block plane that was less expensive than the fine woodworking brands, but better than the Kobalt-level brands. This plane needed a lot of work out of the package. The sole was not flat. It was pretty severely hollow both front to back and from side to side. The iron, while decently sharp, was very hollow on the back and needed flattening, and was not sharp enough to deal with harder woods, but that was easy enough to straighten out. Also, the frog and underneath the adjustable sole had a bunch of orange paint on them that was throwing things off. All-in-all, I had to put a good 1-1.5 hours into making it work properly. If it had cost over $40, my rating probably would have dropped.

Solid tool and very fair price.

This particular block plane has good weight and ergonomic feel. The blade adjustments are fine and the price is affordable w/o second guessing if there's a quality deficit; there's not. If you know how to take care of tools, then use oil and sharpen the blade when needed. This is a solid tool.

Surprised

I was out of town and needed a box plane and didn’t have one with me. I picked this one up to do some finish work on walnut and hard maple.I used this plane basically out of the box as I also didn’t have my stones either. While I wasn’t expecting much from an “out of the box” untuned plane, I was pleasantly surprised! It was peeling paper thin curls on had maple and walnut. It was even able to handle end grain. It’s not a Lie Nielsen or a Veritas, but for $35, I can’t wait to proper tune and sharpen it.Good solid feel as well.

Luckily Jerry who represents Jorgensen fixed their mistake and showed the importance of how keeping their brand name intact. After Jerry's fantastic customer service I took a look at the block plane and I think for what you're paying you are getting way more value with this one. I've tried half a dozen sub $100 planes and for me the quality of it is the best one for value, quality, feel and how it performs.Even my up to $200 planes never worked out of the box but this one actually did shockingly. But I shouldn't be too surprised being I have a couple of their clamps and are my go clamps.Sure, you can go in and work on the iron, which by the way is a solid piece of steel. You could flatten the sole a bit but I don't see it being a real issue if you don't right ... MoreLuckily Jerry who represents Jorgensen fixed their mistake and showed the importance of how keeping their brand name intact. After Jerry's fantastic customer service I took a look at the block plane and I think for what you're paying you are getting way more value with this one. For me the weight of this is heavy enough to power through for the thick shavings but not too heavy to tire your arms. This one works well enough that it would become my most used planer and even lighten the load from my #4 smoother. It also does that very well.No thanks to Lowe's distribution center Jorgensen is a brand I'm going to keep looking towards. Fantastic customer service and every product I've purchased from them has exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for a first or second planer for your workshop definitely make this one of them.

Works really well once tuned up
27 February 2023

First the good stuff. Ductile iron body with an 1/8" thick O1 blade. The bed of the plane is nice and flat, but still needed some work. Only took a couple of minutes to lap the sole and back of the iron (blade) truly flat. The O1 iron takes and holds a really fine edge. Once tuned the plane works extremely well. The bad stuff. The bed (the flat area the iron rests on) on my plane wasn't level with the sole of the plane and required careful filing to bring the high side down before I was able to adjust the plane to take an evenly thick shaving from side to side. I own a lot of planes due to 50 years of custom furniture building. I'm totally comfortable modifying a tool to get good results from it. So for me, fixing a canted bed was no big deal. I own a lot of planes due to 50 years of custom furniture building. I'm totally comfortable modifying a tool to get good results from it. So for me, fixing a canted bed was no big deal. The large flat bed of this plane makes it an easy task. Still it took an hour of carefully filing, checking progress, and filing some more until the iron protruded evenly through the mouth. Once done, this plane performs nearly as well as an expensive premium plane.Tips: Take a file or sandpaper to the edges of the sole to smooth away all of the burrs left from manufacturing. Occasionally rub candle or canning wax on the sole to make it glide over wood. The instructions advise adding a 5 degree microbevel when sharpening. That's too steep, only a 2 degree microbevel is plenty to get the iron really sharp. If this is your first plane, look at some YouTube videos on tuning and using a block plane.

[Rewarded Review] Strong block plane that's easy to use

This Jorgensen no.60-1/2 block plane is the perfect essential tool for smoothing rough finish wood on most woodworking jobs. It measures 6-1/4" long x 1-3/4" wide.. Compact (perfect size) and easy to work with on assembled (furniture, tables, bookcases,, etc) or non-assembled wood (2x4's, plywood, wood-end grain, etc). But also as strong as any other larger block plane that's out there. It's light enough, at about 1.5lb, to use one-handed with ease & get great results!I used it to strip some older painted 1x4 wood pieces, that I'm using to refurbish an old cabinet, and it worked amazingly! Creating the smoothest finish! You can easily adjust the mouth plate to fine-tune adjust the blade for razor thin shavings, or open the mouth for more thick cuts. I recommend using the lateral adjustment lever (metal knob at the back, that pushes the blade in or out from the bottom) gradually & testing on a scrap wood to see what depth you need to get a perfect finish. I personally, find it glides more effortless if you when you use the block plane at a slight angle when pushing forward, creating a 'slicing' motion, rather than a straight forward cut..it's so much easier to work with, without having to push forward so hard. Cuts like butter & the smooth results are everything!Block planes are the essential tool for smoothing out end-grain & edges of wood also. So you can get a nice flat soft-touch end-grain & there's no need to use a sander or other electric tool. You can do this in a matter of minutes & get great results! I recommend using a table vice to hold wood pieces when using the block plane to smooth out those edges. I also used it on the sharp edges of the wood to create a more "rounded" smooth edge. After you finish your wood work, the block plane is so easy to clean! All you have to do is loosen the cap screw to detach the parts & loosen the blade out. You can see all the parts separated in my pictures. Takes seconds to clean. It's made to last, with an iron body that can withstand heavy use;a super strong thick steel blade, a zinc alloy cap, stainless steel spinwheel & all other parts are all stainless steel. This all makes the block plane so durable that it can last years to come, even after thousands of uses! You'll be so happy with this great quality made block plane! It really is a true essential tool when woodworking. You'll be thinking, 'How did I ever do my woodworking without it?!'

[Rewarded Review] Works Great and Easy to Adjust
8 November 2022

This hand plane is great. It’s well-built and easy to use. I don’t really have a lot to say about this since it’s such a simple tool, but it would have saved me a lot of time spent sanding on a project I did a couple of years ago. One thing that sets this apart from other hand planes I’ve used is how easy it is to adjust the cut depth. Instead of trying to set the depth by hand, it has an adjustment knob, which makes it very easy to adjust the depth finely.I didn’t have any nice wood to test on, so I used an old beat-up 2x4, and it cleaned up the edge in about 5 minutes. It went front bumpy and splintery to flat and smooth with minimal effort. I also used some older hand planes that I have on the same 2x4 to compare, and they didn’t work as smoothly. That could just be because they are older, and maybe the blades are dull, or it could have something to do with the angle or how this one is built. All I know is it was a lot smoother and easier to use.

great small planer
29 July 2024

Just a DYI'er and needed something to trim some window jambs as I am not a pro carpenter. Inspected it right out of the package, everything smooth and blade seemed sharp. Made my adjustments and tried it out with a few passes. WORKED GREAT!! Will smooth down the plane surface and hone the blade. Only took about 30-45 minutes to complete one 38 x 24 window jamb. for $35 I am quite impressed.
