Finally My Own Set!

When my daughter, Wendy, was in high school, her art teacher recommended Prismacolor Pencils for her artwork. Oh, I loved those pencils and all the beautiful colors. They produced a soft stroke and her work is still hanging on my walls. When she left home she took those colored pencils with her! Since then I have tried many different pencils and have found none I liked. I have switched to watercolor pencils. This year for my birthday (don't ask) I received the Prismacolor Watercolor Pencil Set Assorted Colors, Set of 36! Wow, I am so happy to finally have a set of my own and use them with many different projects. They are proudly displayed on my desktop and always make me smile when I use them.

I chose Prismacolor for my beginning set of watercolor pencils. I owned the same brand in color pencils and had been experimenting when I saw some wc pencil tutorials and had to try them. I love using these. I read a lot of reviews on many brands, including several brands that are much more expensive, and I can see why a lot of people choose Prismacolor. I never had trouble with breakage or with sharpening them, as some reviewers report. The only issue I have is in getting a really soft watercolor finished look, and this is purely my own problem with having too heavy a touch when laying down color. For this reason, I soon tried a more expensive brand, (Faber-Castell) and for me personally, they give a more pleasing result. This is not to dismiss Prismacolor. Perfect for students of all ages!
16 August 2022

I am a licensed art teacher of 6+ years and I absolutely LOVE Prismacolor's water soluble cored pencils. I use them at every painting event for both kids and adults at a variety of venues, because of their mess free nature. Every time I show students how to use these, they are amazed at how much quality can be packed into a colored pencil! I would highly recommend to anyone who might be thinking about trying out a water soluble colored pencil for their own art.

Prepping my watercolor with these pencils.

I really like these. So far I just made a color chart. And that came out well.I will be using these pencils to draw a partial outline of my next painting, using watercolors. This is my first time starting a painting this way and I look forward to not having graphite lines in my painting.

Prismacolor Watercolor became a favorite.
19 June 2015

I love Prismacolors, have all the pencils they make and collected full sets of many other brands in both watersoluble and non-watersoluble form. My first big artist grade set was 72 Prismacolors when I was sixteen and I've been addicted ever since. I started collecting watercolor pencils too for the ease of being able to paint with a pencil. My first watercolor pencils were 24 Mongol ones at about age 12. At 60, I've been around trying a lot of pencils for decades!Prismacolor Watercolor stand out for sharing the sweet softness of Prismacolor Premier. Used dry they blend and burnish exactly the same. They dissolve easily and unlike Derwent Inktense or Albrecht Durer, they re-dissolve on being washed again. They dissolve easily and unlike Derwent Inktense or Albrecht Durer, they re-dissolve on being washed again. That allows blending and lifting color. The non-soluble after activation pencils can be difficult to handle, either to lighten or move, or because the activation wasn't complete and they migrate anyway. It's easier for me to handle rewettable watercolor pencils and trust what's going to happen if I go over a passage with water again.I bought the 36 color full range set and that became my favorite plein air watercolor journal tool. Prismacolor's collectible tins are beautiful, stack nicely on a shelf, they're good for storing extra pencils but not for taking with. Those tins have to be kept flat and not tilted or shaken. The layered ones partly solved that problem.I recommend either a Global Classic leather zipper case if you can afford it or an inexpensive Niji pencil roll. I used the roll for a long time and that put the big 36 color set in easy reach outdoors or indoors, draped over my leg or a chair arm. With a travel case of some kind, Prismacolor Watercolor became my favorite "away" set of colored pencils. They are the most versatile, have the best texture and wonderful colors. Always use a fresh pencil sharpener blade or sharpen with a craft knife.I prefer watercolor journals or mixed media journals with heavy paper that stands up to washes, rewetting, scraping and other watercolor techniques. They work well on any paper but best effects naturally come on paper crafted for wet media!

Water colour pencils
1 January 2022

This was the only brand available when I wanted to purchase watercolour pencils. Paint colour is ok. My only comment is that the pencils themselves are non descript and other than a small printed colour name they all look the same which makes it harder to reach for the right colour easily. You really have to study the pencil tip and test to make sure you are picking up the right colour pencil.

Watercolor on a budget

Great color. Water color pencils are sometimes more convenient than traditional watercolors. These pencils are top quality. It's a good way to get into watercolor painting for not much money. It might be a small thing, but I also like the tin storage container. I have so much craft stuff that a ready made storage container is helpful.

Work nicely
23 April 2022

I bought these to start working on vinyl doll face ups. The colors went on smoothly without hardly any pressure vs a cheap hobby lobby brand where i have to press very hard & go over multiple times just to get color to show up. I used the water feature on one side of dolls face & not the other to see if you could see the pencil markings when water was applied. You couldn’t see the pencil lines & the colors showed up darker. Previous stated pencils claiming to be watercolor didn’t end up with this effect at all.(once added water to other brand it became very chalky & crusty) So i am very happy with these pencils. Yes there maybe better brands out there but for the price & pigment in these they are good starting point. Would definitely buy them again.

not my favorite
10 October 2021

I love all things Prismacolor, except these. They are scratchy and unless activated with water are dull. You need layers of pencil before getting the true color, which is still not great. I also received two of the same color in the unopened 12 pack. It was hard to tell at first because the names etched in the side are blurry and double stamped, once used I could see that they are the same. I looked up on prism what colors I was supposed to have and was missing one that is unavailable as a single. Blick customer service refunded 10%. Problem not with Blick, you guys are always great when there is a problem! # sweepstakes
