Pro-Ject - Primary E Phono - Turntable
The Pro-Ject Audio Primary E is an entry level audiophile plug&play turntable Listening to analogue records has grown in popularity enormously over the last couple of years. This trend has enticed a lot of manufacturers from far and wide to enter the turntable game. These new players are trying to get a piece of the cake with plastic, features, low quality and cheap prices. They forget what makes a real turntable sound quality! Only with high quality components and precision can you extract all the detail from the micro-grooves of your record. Plastic, lightweight platters, flimsy tonearms and low quality cabling with primitive cartridges are not suited for real HiFi grade turntables.

I’ve always used Richer Sounds, as a teenager getting into hi-fi for the first time to now, a 54 year old who’s having a bit of an upgrade. Why have I always used them? They are the bench mark for a great range of quality components at the best prices. The staff are genuine hi-fi nuts, it’s a passion not just a job for them and they will listen to your questions, requirements and offer you genuine, consultative advice, not just sale patter and try and up sell you. I’ve recently bought a new amp and turntable and they couldn’t have been more helpful. The pro-ject Primary E is great example of that, it’s simply brilliant. Critically acclaimed and just delivers without fuss. Takes me back to my teenage years when all we played was vinyl. The sound quality of this turntable is remarkably good for the price. I bought it for very occasional use and it is fine for that. Were I to get my vinyl down from the roof, I would get something more expensive. The main drawback with this turntable is the belt. I accidentally knocked it off the second time I changed a record. It ought to be secure in a groove. It isn’t. There is no groove. It comes off very easily, it is really fiddly to put back on and it feels cheap. You are afraid that you are going to break it or stretch it. Also, whilst purists may favour this, the absence of an automatic lift and switch off has me missing my old faithful dead Dual. I knew what I was getting, of course, but, far as I can work out (and instructions are minimal), one should turn ... MoreThe sound quality of this turntable is remarkably good for the price. So, great sound but not, in my opinion, a device for frequent use.

Recently replaced my original Dual 505 turntable which had done excellent service over the years with the Pro-ject Primary E. . The reviews for the Primary E were positive and it hasn't disappointed. Well made, simple to set up and use. Provides a great sound and looks stylish and sleek. The Primary E is entry level and therefore doesn't have all the features of a more expensive turntable but if you are on a tight budget the Primary E makes up for it in its sound and quality everytime. Been collecting and listening to vinyl all my adult life and good to know that vinyl continues to grow again in popularity and fortunately companies like Pro-ject are there to provide great products for our music pleasure. Happy listerning!

I haven't yet (due to a family emergency) used this turntable properly yet, only to test that it works, so can only comment on (a) it being fairly straightforward to assemble and install, and (b) Richer Sounds' superb customer service. While I'd been thinking of getting a turntable for a while, it was actually RS's exemplary handling of a problem with an unrelated item that prompted me to buy the TT now. Just as with the handling of that unrelated product issue, the advice (in your Leeds store) was practical, relevant to my needs, and easy to understand, with anything but "Currys-esque" attempts to make me buy something more expensive than I needed. The turntable itself appears to be exactly the right thing if you want a product that has absolutely no whistles & bells or gimmicks - but is well made and should do all that is required of it (err, playing discs!) very well indeed. Also free next-day delivery (to avoid me carrying it home on the crowded train to Hebden Bridge!) and throwing in a 6-year warranty are not ways to make you enemies, either..... ;-)
Bought at the Exeter store 26 Nov. Great interaction with the staff. Got home, set to work connecting it to the rest of the system (Yamaha RS202 rcvr + 40yr old Kelef 100w spkrs). Like every wise buyer, I read the setup info and set to work balancing the stylus arm. I also checked YouTube for reviews only to find, or so it appeared, there was no need to balance the stylus arm after all. Most of the older reviews described a plug & play. Too late, I'd started, so a little put out I finally got the weight right and put on my first LP. It had to be Dark Side. The needle took an age, or so it seemed, before settling on the disc. I needn't have worried, the sound was amazing despite the age of the LP, bought in 1973. The layers of sound were breathtakingly clear and ... MoreBought at the Exeter store 26 Nov. All in all, a great buy.
I bought this to replace my Ariston deck which didn't wan't to start. I love the fact this turntable is so old school... nothing is automatic. You have to turn it on, lift the arm at the end of the record and then turn it off. Simplicity is the byword for this product, all for the better when it comes to the sound quality. This is helped by the better than average phono connectors. It is paired with my Dennon AVRS97H. I would have giving it five stars, but the belt appears to have been stuck together with supper glue. And you can see the grey patch going round the turntable. One piece belt better wow and flutter!
I have been trying to decide if to buy a turntable for about two years and finally bit the bullet. I went for this as it made total sense to get best sound and reliability KISS (Keep It Simple Solution). It has three feet for stability, look at a tripod. Yes you have to turn it off to change the record but the switch is towards the front on the side so no big deal.Yes you have to move the belt to change speed but once you have done it once or twice it is no problem. The gains from dropping all the "convenience" switches and automatic mechanism is great sound probably only match bt turntable two or three times the cost. Now for the minus points, it would have been nice to have the phono leads plug in the back instead of hard wired but I guess it is KISS again, fewer ... MoreI have been trying to decide if to buy a turntable for about two years and finally bit the bullet. This is a great table when it works. Sound is excellent with the supplied cartridge and I personally have no issues with the manual belt or on/off switch to the side. The "analogue" workings of the machine add to the charm for a more traditional experience, and aesthetically it's a good-looking unit.Unfortunately though the build quality seems to be very poor. I received my first Primary e at the end of March but the deck was faulty. Richer Sounds were great in terms of service, sending out a new unit which arrived the very next day. All good for four months until the motor/pulley which drives the belt began grinding mid-way through a record before coming to a complete stop.I contacted RS suggesting my preferred solution would be to swap (with RS) for an ... MoreThis is a great table when it works. All good for four months until the motor/pulley which drives the belt began grinding mid-way through a record before coming to a complete stop.I contacted RS suggesting my preferred solution would be to swap (with RS) for an alternative brand given I'd lost confidence, but due to its age (4 months) was told it had to be repaired. Not ideal but I sent it off as instructed. The unit is now in for repair but having chased after two weeks, I've been told it's still in the queue with Henley Audio awaiting servicing.Overall, RS have been good in dealing but repairs appear slow and I would certainly avoid Pro-Ject in future.
Just bought it on Saturday, arrived Monday! Excellent service. The turntable is amazing. The sound difference between this and my cheap suitcase deck is much much more than I anticipated. The Bass and clarity is just wow.One thing to point out however. This is a VERY BASIC deck. It has a mains switch and that is ALL. When the power is on the turntable goes round, when the power is off the turntable stops. Thats it. The arm has to be manually lifted and placed on the record (natyrally) and manually lifetd off atthe end. Otherwise it will go on and on with the record still spinning at the end. A bit of a shock after having a semi automatic, but that is what you get when you have a better player, nothing to affect the arm or playback.
Bought this to reintroduce me to the joy of records, and I haven't been disappointed in the slightest. I wanted something nice and simple that just played my music, I didn't need any added extras like Bluetooth or built-in speakers and this fitted the bill perfectly. The unboxing was simple enough and the setup was fine. Yes, placing the belt on can be a pain for a minute but once it's on it's fine and I've only knocked it off once since setup, and that was my own clumsy fault! The other issue for some is there's no auto-return but you can always buy a Q-Up if you're prone to a wee kip whilst listening and want to preserve your stylus. The sound is lovely and warm and I'm hearing albums I thought I knew, in a whole different way now!I can see why Which?, What ... MoreBought this to reintroduce me to the joy of records, and I haven't been disappointed in the slightest. The top of a shiny Kallax unit is not ideal. All in all, I'm VERY happy with the purchase. If you're looking for a basic starter unit then this is well worth a look!
