I am giving this 1X purely because of the appalling decision by PURINA not on the product itself which if it were still available, I would give 5*.My dog was recommended this dog food from a vet at animal hospital as she has chronic IBD & has a super sensitive stomach. It took months of trialling different foods that she could tolerate & she has been happily well once we found this. I cannot believe dog food which has been designed to help very poorly dogs, has been pulled simply because of the design of the tin! This is what other reviews are telling me - if so this is true then its absolutely appalling & puts the lives of dogs with sensitive stomachs (which is exactly what its designed for) at risk. I now face potential vet bills whilst trying to find a suitable dog food that she can tolerate. Purina should be absolutely ashamed of themselves as the very dogs who would be eating this are ones that simply cannot switch to other foods easily.

So this review is actually 2 parts- the food and then Chewy. The food- our dog Frank was diagnosed with PLE and severe IBD in the begging of this year after several emergency vet visits, a colonoscopy, and an endoscopy. Bottom line- he’s allergic to any animal protein. The Purina Pro Vegetarian diet has literally saved my dogs life- along with some other key immunosuppressive medications so his body can stop attacking his GI system. He loves the food- the look like the Kix cereal which I find hysterical. He’s excited to eat everyday, solid poops, and no PLE symptoms- fluid in his abdomen, weight loss, protein and vitamin B deficiency since steadily eating this diet. Couldn’t be happier.Chewy- I have to say, from the bottom of my heart, Chewy is the most ... MoreSo this review is actually 2 parts- the food and then Chewy. My husband and I were on vacation this past week with our dogs staying at our parents. We returned home to find that ants had entered into the area we keep the dog food- so disgusting- and managed to bite through the bag. There were ants all in Frank’s dog food. We had one last serving of food from the bag we packed for vacation and had to throw the rest of the bag out- probably close to $50 worth of food. Last night I ordered a new bag and the airtight containers (because never again) and was worried about how many days Frank would have to go without eating because our local vet doesn’t carry the food and local pet stores do not have it either as it is a prescription authorized diet. The food is already out for delivery this morning. Thank you, Chewy, you are life saving!

Dog finally has a happy tummy
20 March 2024

It has been over a year since my dog has had a happy tummy. Another prescription food was suggested and eventually failed, as my dog's gastrointestinal issues got worse over time. It was exhausting trying to get any kind of food in his stomach, and when he did finally eat, he was miserable. It has been a long time since my dog has had a quiet tummy. Then my vet prescribed this food to cut the animal proteins from his diet, and while it was a slow, uncomfortable start because there was no real transition since he refused to eat his old food, my dog is now back to his happy, playful self. Such a difference!! It took two weeks for his body to adjust. My dog now looks forward to eating and runs to the kitchen when he hears me preparing his meal. I add the Purina HA ... MoreIt has been over a year since my dog has had a happy tummy. Great food but production issue is very poor
28 February 2024

Been told by the company since mid December that they will have production back underway and in stock by early Feb then mid March and now being told mid April. This is shocking service for the dogs that rely on this food for their health! My dog was diagnosed with both severe IBD, Pancreatitis and reflux disorder which means she chokes and had near fatal misses with the dry food as it is very sticky and gets stuck in her throat! Now I’ve had to switch to another food due to Purina’s lack of urgency to sort the production issue out. After consulting with the Vet Hospital, I have made the switch to Hills Prescription diet Z/D…..I am putting this here for other people to switch too as this has been a good switch without issue for my dog and she loves the food! Pretty much the same calories in each tin despite them being slightly smaller tins so you generally use the same amount for a feeding guide. You’ve lost a valuable customer here forever as I won’t switch her diet back again when you decide to get your into gear!

This product is good enough. It was prescribed by my vet as my dog was diagnosed with Colitis and or IBD. Works well with tummy but he has allergies and some of the ingredients still prove a problem. However, I have had to find another food like all of us here. He can't eat many proteins and I have ended up trying him with concept for life hypoallergenic Kangeroo. His poop is not firm so I have had to up his fibre with pro fibre range. He cannot have Hills or Royal Canin as they bring his nails and ears up in worse fungal infections. Even your food does the same to some extent. But no way near as bad. I'm hopefull that this kangeroo food wont cause any problems. He can't eat any other meats. My dog is so poorly now production has stopped.

I was so pleased to find a dog food that my dog could eat without his stomach bleeding due to being allergic to meat and complex protein. This isn’t the first time I haven’t been able to get this food but this time round it has been a couple of months already and my dog is seriously ill as a result. I have moved him onto Solo vegetal and Green Crunch which he loves and although his stomach isn’t bleeding he still has sever pain and stomach cramps. We were back at the emergency vets last night and again today costing £500. All because this food is out of production due to updating the label. Why would you do this when you know that you are the only company that do a single hydrolysed vegetarian protein and dogs lives depend on your food to keep them alive. My two 11-year-olds and one two-year-old love it
13 May 2024

My vet recommended this as it was the most anti-inflammatory diet she knew of and one of my dogs has three healed fractures in her pelvis. Paloma is a rescue. This severe injury happened to her before I adopted her. She had massive flaky skin that would leave a shadow on the ground wherever she was sitting. That skin conditions cleared up and probably because she has a better diet as well as a home. My other two dogs are 11 years old and it seems to work well with them as well. I must say I have tasted it and it's a bit like popcorn. I wish Purina would list the macro ingredients so it wouldn't look like a bunch of processed food. That would certainly make me feel better.

Our baby loves this food!

Our 5 year old mini Frenchie was just hospitalized for pancreatitis. She ended up getting a gastrointestinal bleed and pneumonia. She spent 3 days on a feeding tube and IVs. When she was discharged, her doctor prescribed us this food. Her previous food was super high in fat and we didn’t know, it had been recommended by her dermatologist. We didn’t know that high fat diets cause pancreatitis. She has made a complete 180 health wise and she seriously is obsessed with this food. She dances on her hind legs when I pour her a bowl. And I feel so good as her owner knowing this food is safe for her and isn’t going to cause a flare up. I also use it as treats, and she loses her mind. She even chooses this food over the canned food we try to give her. We are so grateful ... MoreOur 5 year old mini Frenchie was just hospitalized for pancreatitis. Shasta loves her Purina HA
11 May 2024

Shasta has IBD, Pancreatitis & Addison's. The IBD scarring is right at the lip of the valve between stomach & intestines, which causes the valve to stay stuck open when it is inflamed. I always know when IBD is in flair due to poop smell on breath from digested food free flowing between stomach and intestines. With Pancreatitis, even one pea sized piece of fat (like cheese) will flare her off the charts. The only way to take care of her is with Purina HA which is soaked in water and fed smaller meals every 4 hours. We do get 6-7 hours through the night of good sleep. The trick is to soak the food. Dry food sits like a rock on her stomach and takes too long to digest through her. Addison's is treated with daily steroid & monthly shots. Not me. With extra care and the right food/medicines, she will live a full normal life. I love Shasta to the moon and back. Purina HA is the only choice for her. And I have tried many, many other things from raw to fresh to kibble. She is 6 1/2 now. Hope this information helps someone else to make decisions. Soft non-fat food is key.
