This little machine is a gem. I am an 80 yr old model boat builder and have found it safe and easy to use and have turned deck fittings for models and tapered wooden masts. Highly recommended.

Great for small pcs. Additional accesories could be in the kit. The knife "support" is too small. All in all good for antique model ship parts.

First, the tool is well made and comes complete with everything you need, apart from cutting and shaping tools. There is really only one problem and that is lack of power. Anything but the lightest pressure on the workpiece being turned brings it to a halt. Consequently I am not sure what you would use it for. I have replaced mine with a much bigger lathe for modelling (I make model ships up to 60 inches long) and more general work. I am sure there are many satisfied customers but I felt it was money well wasted - in contrast to all my other Proxxon tools.Another annoyance is that when you make suggestions to Proxxon they do not give you the politeness of a reply.

Bought about a month ago to make miniature furniture. I was getting along fine turning little chair legs and cross members. Unfortunately the motor then began ‘pulsing’ (starting and stopped quickly), so the machine has been returned to Axminster tools for repair/replacement. For the work I was doing the lathe suited me very well. It is small, light weight and easy to use. I have no experience of other small lathes for comparison but for me, this one does the job - when it works.
Bought this lathe a while ago and really glad I have it. Been learning as I go, and made some great tool handles and other things. Thank you Axminster Tools
Admittedly after purchasing this i thought id made a mistake and should of gone for a more powerful lathe. To my suprise this little thing is a powerhouse im turning light pulleys and things of that size and bigger. Using my preferred wood "Matured Oak" i get some beautiful results. Nice sharp detailed work. Tighten your work piece tightly and the machine will not halt as mentioned. Also make sure you have a razor sharp set of chisels. I use very little pressure and cuts thru oak like butter. Oh and get yourself the 3 key chuck and drill chuck for tailstock. This will make your machine more versatile. I can say for sure Proxxon is quality.
I thought I`d better write my review, after using the lathe for some two years. Having given the lathe sufficient time to reveal any faults, I can state categorically, it has ample power for turning small objects, in my case fishing float bodies and components parts. It has never slowed down, as experienced by Mr Kinnaer. The attachments available ie chucks, for the lathe only increase its use and application. In all, fantastic value and excellent performance
Having read GS Kinnear's review review of the Proxxon DB250 wood turning lathe, I felt compelled to add mine as well. I have had no problem turning any timber in my MODELLING lathe. I have turned down dowel up to 30mm with no problems. I have never been able to 'stop' the lathe even with quite a lot of pressure. I think if this lathe is used for what it is designed for it is excellent. I have turned many items including masts for 5 or 6 wooden model ships and have achieved excellent results. If you want to turn larger lumps of wood then a bigger lathe would be required, but for most modelling jobs, this is an excellent lathe.
I have wanted to start woodturning for a while but felt somewhat limited by both cost and space. I have a very small section of my garage to use as a craft area, and also didn't really need a full size lathe at this stage. I wanted to something to turn small projects with, and equally not spend a fortune on should I end up either not enjoying it or not being able to get the hand of it. Well.. I am either naturally talented or woodturning on the DB 250 is easy! So far, I have had so much fun with this machine! It really is a micro lathe in every sense.. so don't expect to be able to turn bowls or chair/table legs on this. The maximum distance between centres is approximately 8 inches once you have accessories chucked in place, but honestly that's enough for me at ... MoreI have wanted to start woodturning for a while but felt somewhat limited by both cost and space. The main application for this would be pen turning, or working with miniature furniture for dolls houses. You could comfortably turn a small/slimline candle stick holder with this, as well as perhaps narrow salt and pepper shakers, handles for small tools, rings.. or.. as I am using it for.. making handles and stems for custom magic wands! The lathe itself is of superior German build quality and is a breeze to setup and start turning on. It comes with a basic center finding tool but I would recommend a slightly better one as it's a little awkward to use. I would also highly recommend purchasing the 3 jaw chuck and the drill chuck accessory for the tailstock. With these additions, the lathe opens up in functionality and becomes much more versatile for the miniature turner. I do feel that I will outgrow this lathe, as I have definitely caught the woodturning bug! However don't let that put you off.. if you are considering pen turning and don't have a lot of space for a regular size lathe, this is absolutely the best micro lathe available by a country mile!
After good reviews on here and advise from other woodturners that I know I decided to contatact axminster tools to see if they had any in stock. they were extremly helpful and the service they provided was excellent. My lathe came back today and its an excellent lathe it do not slow down when turning. Quality built and worth every penny. Its excellent for model building . BRILLIANT.
