PRS John Mayer Silver Sky - Frost - Rosewood
The PRS Silver Sky is an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar where every detail adds up and sets this guitar apart from the pack and the past. The result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, the Silver Sky is based off of years of development. Incorporating Mayer and Smith’s favorite elements of 1963 and 1964 instruments with an eye toward modern references, the PRS Silver Sky delivers the warmth and familiarity of an old guitar with the finesse of a brand-new instrument. Some of the more distinctive specifications include, the headstock shape, tuners, bridge, pickups, and neck and fretboard options. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark design, but inverted both to accommodate Mayer’s playing style and also to keep a consistent length of string behind the nut, which makes staying in tune easier. The tuners are a traditional vintage-style, closed-back tuner, but with PRS’s locking design. The steel tremolo takes the patented PRS design and incorporates Gen III knife-edge screws. Setup flush to the body in the neutral position so that the tremolo bridge only goes down in pitch, the bridge’s increased contact with the body allows the guitar itself to be acoustically louder, which in turn improves the signal to noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM single-coil pickups are very round and full, with a musical high end that is never “ice-picky” or brash.

And I love the aesthetic of the hollow birds. If you’re thinking about getting one just do it.

I've played around 6 of these at various stores. Overall I would say these are definitely the best strat style guitar in the $2,500 range. The consistency is much better than Fender at a similar price but if you can play before buying, of course that is ideal as all are good but some are better than others.Addressing some other complaints, the tuners do have plastic heads but are not 'cheap' or low quality. Gibson also puts plastic tuners on their $6,000+ custom shop guitars. It does come with a gig bag which some people may not like but it's a very nice gig bag and I usually use them to travel with guitars and they take up much less storage space.Comparing it to my 1962 CS: quality and playability are similar. I have been a Fender snob ever since I was inspired to pick up the guitar when I was 13. I day dreamt about someday owning an American Fender Strat. Fast forward 17 years and i've been blessed enough to have played and own quite a few American strats. I'm a big Mayer fan and when he left Fender for PRS, it really left a sour taste in my mouth. I was one of the big skeptics of the Silver Sky. I didn't like the contours, the colors, and my God that headstock is dead awful! As the next two years went on I heard nothing but praise for the Silver Sky. I was still very skeptical but I wanted to at least play it so I can say this thing sucks. The neck was chunkier than i'm used to but it felt just right. Similar to a soft V late 50's strat necks. Every pickup position sang a uniquely distinct tone. The tone knobs actually work! This guitar is a tone monster. You can dial up many different tones. But the star of the show is the pickups. Similar to vintage strats but louder and clear. I truly was impressed with this amazing guitar. So I asked to play the other one they had on display. That guitar played just as flawless as the first one. Wow. If you play ten American Standard Strats, you might fine one or two that you really enjoy playing. In my experience, every Silver Sky is set up out of the box wonderfully and plays excellent. Very consistent quality control. Because of this I did not hesitate to order a Silver Sky in the color I wanted (Moc Sand). When it came in, it played as wonderfully as the others i've played. Well done PRS. Amazing guitar at a great price.

I am a 28-year-old disabled musician and I have never played a guitar like this before. People claim that this is a Stratocaster copy I am here to tell you that unless you put your hands on one you cannot claim that. The scoop access that PRS is known for brought to an s style guitar has allowed even myself with my disability to be able to play slide guitar and successfully reach the upper frets all the way up to the 20th because the horn is scooped out You cannot do this on a Fender Stratocaster The horns are too big and bulky. The pickups themselves I expected no less from PRS I don't know how they've done it it's probably some wizardry but they're fantastic there's really not much to say there's a reason PRS is not selling these pickups separately then again ... MoreI am a 28-year-old disabled musician and I have never played a guitar like this before. For those that do not know the guitar comes in a $100 gig bag with a velvet cushion for the headstock these gig bags are so nice they might as well be hard cases. I don't understand why people are fretting so much about that to this day. Most musicians to my knowledge put their guitars in gig bags for gigs anyway. That is unless you're flying millions of miles.
First off, I've been a bit of a Fender fanboy for a long time. Like many people, I have often scoffed at the idea of paying ultra-lux money for a copy of a strat. But this past weekend I went to my local GC to play the Fiore and, MCCarty and some CU24s, some more Fenders and even a couple of Les Pauls. After two hours in the room, I came home with an Orion Green SS. I just simply could not stop playing it. So comfortable to hold and play, once my hand adjusted to the neck shape. But the tone immediately grabs you as being full and round, bright enough, and not nearly as overly-harsh as my Am Pro2 can be. Build quality and finish was excellent, and this thing was so fresh that buffing compound is still coming to the surface after playing. I've played strats and teles since 70s. Owned some good ones from Custom Shop etc. This JMSS is as good a single coil guitar as i've ever found. I just want one really good single coil guitar in my life. I don't want to own a collection of Strats and Teles and G&Ls, etc. and I'm not knocking them ... no doubt those guitars are good too.. Maybe I'm unlucky but I just never found the perfect Fender for $2300 or less. This PRS guitar feels great, looks great, and sounds really fantastic, just a perfect single coil balanced guitar. If there's one word to describe this guitar as a single coil instrument it's "balanced" and "responsive" making it easy to get the classic sounds on all pickup combinations and volume/tone settings. For those folks upset about gig bag versus ... MoreI've played strats and teles since 70s. Overall:This guitar has been out long enough to endure many conversations good and bad, so I won’t dive into those tired details here- all I know is I’m glad I held out and purchased the Midnight Rose, rosewood version (I could’ve gotten the Nebula but I slept on it!). For context I own/play mostly telecaster-type guitars (G&L, Fender, etc), and never really owned Stratocaster type guitar before.Anyway…FINISH: I’m loving the 2020 Midnight Rose. I was hesitant to see many stock images make it look like a duller flat pink, but not so. Just like his other finishes, this one exudes more of a metallic character and changes depending on lighting/angle/etc. Sometimes it looks like a cold pastel pink, other times a warm berry vibe. I was hesitant to see many stock images make it look like a duller flat pink, but not so. Just like his other finishes, this one exudes more of a metallic character and changes depending on lighting/angle/etc. Sometimes it looks like a cold pastel pink, other times a warm berry vibe. For those familiar with Fender finishes, I would say it’s a slightly warmer Burgundy Mist. Additionally, I also want to add this finish doesn’t leave fingerprints easily at all, also in due to the lighter color- another smaller detail. NECK PROFILE: here’s where things get interesting from releases prior to 2020- the neck profile changed slightly. I remember jamming a 2018 Onyx version of the Silver Sky, and although I thought it was slightly thick in general, this new 2020 version is even moreso to me. For those who aren’t aware, PRS is keeping the original Silver Sky neck profile (635JM neck) on the maple fretboard versions, but updated the rosewood versions (oddly enough, the handwritten spec card that came with my guitar says it is a 64JM neck, maybe a new profile name for it?). As per the PRS website: “…the maple fretboard option comes with the original 635JM neck shape, while the rosewood fretboard option has been subtly modified in the shoulders to feel more “rounded” in your hand. Both neck shapes were designed by researching vintage instruments and Mayer test-driving guitars on stage to find what felt right. The fretboard radius on both options is 7.25”.” With that said, I’m used to smaller neck shapes (thin U like a ’52 tele, standard C’s, etc) as I have smaller hands so it did take me a day or so to adjust. Is it a deal breaker for me? No, but for those who have smaller hands and like thinner necks you might want to try one of these in store first before purchasing sight unseen.FRETBOARD RADIUS/FRETS: Another popular discussion- the 7.25” fretboard radius. Myself and many others can confirm; you will have no issues doing bends on this guitar. As long as the frets are high enough it shouldn’t be an issue. SETUP/STRINGS: Setup/intonation is superb out of the box. Only thing I decided to change immediately was the string gauge size; I would normally do 10’s for short scale length guitars but I enjoy my current 9’s on the 25.5” PRS. The stock 10’s made it feel a little stiff in my opinion, and vibratos didn’t come easy for me. FINAL THOUGHTS: Aside from those discussed above, I enjoy this guitar tremendously. Stays in tune, sounds sweet, is gorgeous to look at, and does everything I need it to do. Again if I had to nitpick anything it would be the thicker neck profile, but that’s more a preference thing. Plus John has really big hands so I would imagine he’d enjoy a bigger neck. Who is this guitar for? Obviously for fans of John and his new-era sound. It’s for those who like the stratocaster sound mixed with the trademark glassy tone and quality from PRS. I never found an S-type guitar I bonded with but this one did it for me. I would argue 80% of the reason I bought a Silver Sky was for the pickups - I would imagine this guitar wouldn’t have the same magic if it had run of the mill single coils in it. Is it worth the $2300 price tag? It’ll be up to you to decide, but I’d rather have one nice guitar of this caliber than five okay guitars. If you’re patient and don’t mind preowned, they can certainly be had for less. Don’t want to wait? Use the installment plan if you need to - it’s a fantastic beast.
Not to sound like a snob. But I do want to qualify my comments with some context. As such, I will say my current collection consists of a Jeff Beck CS, a 2014 AmStd, and a 2017 FMT Elite limited Ebony Strat, that I love. It lives with a couple of Teles, Core PRS C24s, and a Les Paul Standard & Traditional. And not one of them has the Responsiveness/Dynamic Range and tuned vintage sounding Pups that this has.Pups: Every position & pup is usable.. The neck is as expected. No Ice Picks to be seen.Play: It's hard to describe the responsiveness of this gtr. It goes from a whisper to the entire body resonating as if some super responsive acoustic. For me, it defines the gtr... It's almost feels like it's giving back more than I'm putting in.? FYI, as of now, I've only played through an AxeFx2. So I guess it's possible that an amp brings an entirely different experience? But I will say, even unpluged, this thing acoustically rings.Build: I can only speak to mine.. But, for the most part it's on par with my Core PRSs. Though Frets arn't of the jumbo variety, they are dressed well & surprisingly low & unobtrusive. You almost don't feel them. Action is low.. very low, but nothing frets out. It plays great.. Though i love the 9.5 to 14"r on the compound neck/fingerboard's from the 2017/18 Elites. I never would have believed PRS could build a 7.25"r gtr that didn't fret out on 2step bends. Yet they did.. FYI: Both my 9.5"r Strats choke out on 2 step bends if set to an action that's even close to the SilverSky out of the box..I will say that I hate the plastic tunner buttons. I guess they match the tungsten color? But come on, that's just greed. And speaking of,, at first sight, the gigbag was an affront. Albeit a very nice gigbag. But, still! Price not withstanding, I guess it kind of goes with the feel of a work'n musicians gtr?
First of all, I wasn't a believer in this guitar at first either. I've owned a lot of high end strats, though, and consider myself a strat guy with little time for anything else, but I didn't see the point of the Silver Sky at first,Then I ran into one locally and played it. I liked it, but I didn't buy it right away. I came back a week later and played a different one for longer and ended up buying one. Since then I've sold all my other strats but one.Look at Silver Sky like this: the previous Mayer strat from Fender, one of the best guitars they've made, was revered for the neck and great sounding pickups, which you also have here. Those two alone would be enough, but the Silver Sky pickups are another level higher again. All five positions are amazing. I've owned a lot of high end strats, though, and consider myself a strat guy with little time for anything else, but I didn't see the point of the Silver Sky at first,Then I ran into one locally and played it. The tone controls are usable all throughout their range. The pickups have so much air in them and they're so responsive that you don't want to stop playing. They actually change the way you play because they are so transparent and articulate. They have warmth on the bottom end that most strats don't have.Besides the neck and pickups, every part of the guitar has basically taken the strat and made small improvements. The headstock's pitch means you don't need string trees and you get straight string pull - better tuning and bending. The frets are perfectly level right out of the case. The cutaways are deeper and allow better reach. The switch is firmer so you don't knock it out of place. The volume is in a better position. The saddles don't move laterally. The saddles don't have a heavy finish on them. No finish inside the cavities to help the wood age naturally. The tremolo works better. The jack is raised so you can get any cable in and out more easily. The forearm contour is better suited to people who wear their guitar lower than they did in the 50s. I'm sure there is more that I'm forgetting.Basically, as a 99% strat guy whose owned dozens, this is easily the best strat I've ever owned.
I have always been a fender strat player. This guitar has completely modernized the strat and in my opinion has better tone than most guitars, period. The feel on this guitar is indescribably smooth and isn't fathomable until you pick up the silver sky in person. My neck is rosewood and it feels like butter and is so easy to play and sound phenomenal. I chose the Tungsten color and is gorgeous in photos and in person! There is no high frequency pitch noises that I dislike sometimes with strats. There is also no flat buzzing sounds. Very beautiful and deep tones. Any little bend gets matched tone quality it deserves that some guitars don't perfectly pick up on. PRS is made with such great detail and you can hear/ feel that high quality in this guitar. The JM/ PRS ... MoreI have always been a fender strat player. PRS is made with such great detail and you can hear/ feel that high quality in this guitar. The JM/ PRS custom pickups designed to be a 60's strat sounds majestic. PRS feels more custom than fender in my opinion. So I think they did a spectacular job with this guitar (have not played the SE version yet). The only complaints I have is that the tone knobs are plastic and that this guitar comes in a really cheap road bag. I thought with how high quality this guitar is and how expensive it is that certainly there should be a nice hard case for this guitar. Other than that, this guitar is one of the best I've ever played. This guitar gets a lot of heat for being too similar to a fender strat but the truth is, this is a very unique guitar. It's the Tesla of guitars in today's guitar market.
