This is easily one of the best square-1 on the market, despite it being sold at a very low price point! The cube has just the right amount of speed to give you that fast but also controllable turning feel. The cube is very flexible for a square-1 and the corner cutting is way beyond the price it’s being sold at.Out of the box, however, the cube really did not feel that way. The U and D layers were quite stiff and slow at first, and the tensions were very tight. The only thing that turned well was the slice layers. I figured that it just needed to be broken in. So after doing about 100 solves on the cube, I cleaned it out, loosened up the puzzle, and added two drops of DNM and one drop of Silk on each layer. This made the cube turning absolutely phenomenal! I have also heard that it is just not threaded well in the first place, but I don't know if that is true. Bad stuff aside, this cube preforms AMAZINGLY! Easily the best turning square-1 on the market. I have tried all the different colors of them, and every one of them turns differently. They all turn very well though. This cube helped cut my square-1 times about in half because my cubetwist would lock up all the time and pop. Overall, if you are into square-1 at all, you need this cube. I just wish I didn't have to buy another one.

Constant Exploding, Unfixable
7 February 2016

Upon getting the puzzle (I got the stickerless, by the way), I was really happy with its speed and feel. My only dislike was the psuedo-pops it had, which the Low mod fixed. However, after a while, the piece that held the screw was stripping, and so it constantly loosen, and come out, causing completely devastating explosions. At this point, it was completely unusable, especially in a potential competition setting, where it would be illegal to fix (regulations Article 5b1: "Tools and/or parts of other puzzles must not be used to repair the original puzzle. Penalty: disqualification of the attempt (DNF)."). However, since I hadn't heard of this happening to many people, I figured mine was just defective. Because of this, I went and bought another one, just like the previous. On this one, I immediately did the Low mod, and after a few weeks, it fell to the same fate. The same piece broke in the same way. Now, I have two unusable square-1s, which is especially a disappointment to me, as I am an avid and pretty fast solver (I average ~25 seconds or lower), and now I am left with no good one to use. If you just want a square-1 that you can solve occasionally, or look at on your shelf, then fine, get it. If you're learning the event, I would say get another one to learn control on (like how beginners on 3x3 shouldn't get the best speedcube so they don't overshoot). And if, like me, you love this event, then do not buy this at all. It will be a completely ususable waste.

Great but 1 problem
6 February 2017

I got this a couple of months ago as my 8th cube. It was great. I used it often, until it exploded. It was rather odd because I'd never heard of it exploding. I tried putting the screw and other internal pieces back together, then the other pieces, but it only lasted a day. The next day, it popped again. From then on, it say at the back of my collection. 3 months later, I decided to give it another try. I took the screw, the spring, the washer, and the other weird pieces and figured out where they went. I kept an eye on the screw on the other side. I noticed that every solve, it was slowly unscrewing, ready to pop. I realized that about every 6 or 7 solves, I would need to screw it back in. Still a good cube and fun to solve. Don't let this stop you, it was probably just my cube.

Great! But...

I've heard for the longest time that this is the best square 1 out there and I can see why people say that. It has a nice weight to it, it turns... great, but more on that in a second, all in all it is a nice puzzle. On first turns I was impressed by the smoothness of the middle slice but while testing it with the top offset by 30 degrees the slice caught after a 90 degree turn. I was able to make the full turn only after quite a bit of effort. Turns out that the caps for the triangular pieces are deformed such that they catch pretty unnaturally and threaten to pop off when forced. This should be remedied by a bit of sanding and hopefully just a bit more breaking in.I'm a bit disappointed with the experience I've had with this particular copy of this puzzle after ... MoreI've heard for the longest time that this is the best square 1 out there and I can see why people say that. Probably The Best Square-1, But Still Could Be Improved
4 April 2018

I got this way back near when it was first released, but completely forgot to do a review on it after I broke it in and stuff. Well, needless to say it's as broke in as it could be by now, ha ha!The first thing you'll notice with this is that the top and bottom layers are quite sluggish. That's not necessarily a bad thing though because Square-1s are often known to be uncontrollably loose and are not adjustable aside from the middle slice. So a bit of friction on said layers can help. The friction though is mysteriously inconsistent depending on how the pieces are mixed within each other. So I presume it has to do with slight inconsistencies in molding. So a bit of friction on said layers can help. The friction though is mysteriously inconsistent depending on how the pieces are mixed within each other. So I presume it has to do with slight inconsistencies in molding. It didn't get much more consistent after said breaking in time either so I feel it's a bit easy to over/undershoot turns as a result. However, it's not that much of an issue aside from feel because of the corner cutting. It'll cut almost a whole corner piece (Contrary to the X-man which won't cut as much) which is remarkably forgiving for a Square 1, but will seem like they stick a bit to the point you need to use some force to cut, which again has a way of feeling odd. The reason why this happens is because of the green center stems stabilizing the pieces from popping out. If you remove those stems, corner cutting becomes buttery smooth but it will probably pop. So I'd leave them in and just get used to the sticky feel during a cut. It will also reverse corner cut a tad, but only up until the end of a piece's roundness. But there really aren't that many viable Square-1s to choose from when it comes to performance: this and the X-man, which is also QiYi.There is one thing to look out for though when it comes to a QiYi Square 1 of any kind is the nylon nut that holds the screw in place. They all are known to strip over time and allow the puzzle to loosen. So the solution people have been using for that is to use a locknut or to just glue the screw to the current nut, which was my method.Even with the flaws, it's still probably the best option out there thanks to that corner cutting. I wouldn't be surprised if this was improved on by some company any day now though. Just that all Square-1s in existence right now for whatever reason just seem to have some sort of design flaw(s) that prevents them from being truly great. Low corner cutting, pieces breaking, uneven tensions, etc...

Square 1 Brings Nostalgia + Is Excellent
22 June 2021

As a kid i had a lot of different toys growing up. I specifically had a square 1 cube where the front face was yellow with the square 1 logo on it, and a different color scheme. Ya know, the really really old version that was black and had stickers. So when i bought this brand, i chose the black with stickers for nostalgic purposes. I was surprised how awesome it is for the price i paid for. Even with no lube out of the box it turns great. It's a very fun challenge. Highly recommend.

Very Good (if learning the square 1)
19 July 2020

I didn’t expect the puzzle to be quite small. The cube was quite sluggish. After a couple of solves, it was turning fine. The slice layer was turning quite smooth. The other layers were also smooth, but they were a bit sandy. I am not a square 1 solver, so I can’t give a 100% recommendation to this puzzle, but I can say it is a challenge to beginners and this puzzle is a great way to get started to solving the square 1. If you are square 1 solver who wants a better option, consider the YuXin little magic or even the popular X-man volt... Hope this review helps. Overall I’ll give this a 4.5/5 but since there isn’t ‘4.5’, I’ll just put 5. Remember (MGC) Make good choices.

why this is good
12 November 2022

as far as non magnetic square-1s go this is one of the best, the turning is smooth and it breaks in incredibly fast. the slicing is amazing and doing moves fast, you feel the satisfaction and quality of qiyi. i have one problem with this. some of the tiles on my stickerless model of this puzzle fall off regularly however, buying stickered is an easy fix. also the tutorial is weird.
