QNAP TVS-872XT-I5-16G 8-Bay NAS

This item is a pile of unreliable junk the motherboard had to replaced during the warranty period which took Qnap months to repair as it was shipped back to Taiwan to be done. No extension was made to the warranted period and since being returned has had multiple issues with the latest being outside of warranty meaning if I want to use my $3600 purchase I need to pay $1050 USD to get the item fixed. A nas is an item I would expect would last much longer than this and this particular model does not have good reliably rates and many faults I would give it less than 1 star if I could I’d rather flush my money down the toilet than purchase another Qnap device

I unfortunately made the decision to purchase off-the-shelf NAS (more than 1 QNAP) to save time and effort within my business and focus on other aspects. We also use cloud platforms as backup services but the NAS was intended as a local option as part of a distributed backup and as storage for IP cameras.The software is unreliable, the machines boot randomly and regularly and I have attempted to work with QNAP support in order to resolve, but they are unhelpful even when you extract logs, save and upload. 4K/Photo Editing - Over The Top NAS/RAID

As a professional photographer for many years, I am well versed in building workstations with RAID arrays for storage & editing speed. I have had great success and longevity utilizing ARECA internal PCIE RAID (RAID 3!!) Cards.This is my first NAS & my first QNAP device, but it wont be my last. It ticks all the right boxes for speed (Thunderbolt 3), network connectivity (10GbE), and caching (2 M.2 ssds). I do look forward to an updated/Thunderbolt 3 & 10 GB/e expansion box. So many things that I probably dont really care about. But, the connectivity from anywhere in the world (backups, mobile up & down) is actually amazing and useful. This does allow the creation of your own cloud storage with endless options for backup, streaming, playing, hosting, etc... It is virtually limitless. It is easy to have access to ALL of your media files from any device, from wherever you are. It does not, ofcourse, provide the internet connection to download your files from anywhere, so remember that. BYO internet.But how is it for editing 4k footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CC? Its great! Utilizing the thunderbolt connection for editing this thing rocks. I have mine configured to RAID 6 for a total of 47TBs of storage. I can simultaneously edit from my workstation and my Origin PC laptop, connecting via thunderbolt 3, on the same project, with steady results. This would be great for a small editing team, which is how i occasionally work. For the most part I work solo, from both machines, and the Thunderbolt 3 connection is YUMMIE! It works fantastically utilizing the 10GbE port as well from my ASUS motherboard. Beware that few motherboards have 10GbE native. It will be a wonderful device when my whole network is updated to 10GbE.A couple of simple suggestions, do not utilize T2E in setup, if you are using for editing, as it does reduce the speed a bit. Use the Thunderbolt 3 connection. It is fast, fast, fast, steady and easy! Make sure you get good cables and know your local distances from the device. Great job QNAP!! Very impressive.

Best Customer Support - Ever!

When I began my search for an external storage solution, I had the following requirements: thunderbolt 3 and at least 6 bays. I hadn't heard of QNAP before, but the first thing I noticed were the multiple positive customer support comments. By contrast, the comments for their competitors were incredibly poor. The other thing I liked was that the enclosure came with no drives. This way I could load it up with my preferred and long time favorites (Western Digital, Red Pro). For example, if your computer goes to sleep, the QNAP loses the connection via TB3 and sends an audible alarm. I found the alarm to be too loud. Within the system settings, I found a volume control, specifically for this. So far, I do notice an improved response time while filtering through images on LR. I previously utilized a 4-Bay configured as a RAID 10. I like that the QNAP has a dedicated processor and RAM. I haven't conducted any speed test, but will provide an update within the month.I have the QNAP placed within 2 feet of where I work. I do hear it when data is written to the drives, but it is quiet. I haven't heard any fans and I am working in a relatively warm environment at times (65-85F).With respect to customer support...when I submitted my first ticket, I received an email response the same day. QNAP customer support walked me through the full installation process while screen sharing. The process took over an hour and the tech rep was kind and patient (very patient) and allowed me to repeat whatever I learned while they observed. Leading up to the screen share, I could see other QNAP customer support personnel adding notes to the ticket to confirm the date and time and including other techs in the ticket to make sure someone would assist me. It was a team effort.Thank you B&H and QNAP for guiding me to and through this product.

Excellent NAS for Multimedia and Large Storage

This is my second QNAP NAS. About five years ago I purchased the QNAP TS-451mini 5-bay NAS and set it up as a raid 5. This has been a totally reliable NAS that has given me no trouble whatsoever so when I wanted a larger and faster NAS to provide additional backup and for use in video editing I chose the QNAP TV-872XT. It has performed exactly as expected. The NAS is relatively quiet and is not obtrusive in my setup where it is about 5 feet from my desktop monitor. Initially I have installed 6 Seagate Iron Wolf 10 TB drives and configured the NAS for raid 5 which has given me about 43 TB of useable storage. I have two bays empty for further expansion as needed. This eight bay NAS took about 6 weeks to get built and delivered, they are currently made to order (as of Q1 2019). While the hardware isnt necessarily worth almost $2k, you are paying for a custom frame, mainboard, and access to the QNAP ecosystem + support. At this price point you are likely comparing a self-built PC with FreeNAS to QNAP as Synology doesnt have higher end devices with desktop components.The NAS was delivered in great shape and the build quality is fantastic plus its a breeze to get setup. You will be up and running with setup within an hour, unless you have significant mod plans in mind. The 8400T cpu handles all this with ease and 16gb of ram is plenty. If youre running VMs or have more than 20 users regularly accessing the device, you may need to get some additional RAM. Be warned that upgrading your CPU voids your warranty but you can just about change any other component without ending your warranty.The QNAP ecosystem is great for non-technical users to an extent. If you have specific needs for customization, it can be a bit difficult to figure things out. In some cases you need to use SSH to access apps or write your own scripts at which point this enters a very technical domain. Its seemingly a bit less polished that Synologys environment BUT you do have more customization options. Running containers also solves for the lack of some out of the box apps.One thing I have to say is QNAP Customer Service is AWESOME. If you are based in the US, they respond quickly and will help you get to the bottom of your issues. Its a refreshing experience compared to dealing with big companies like Asus, Apple, Samsung, etc. who just work off scripts. Major props to their team for balancing technical know-how and personality.All in all, very happy with the product and would easily recommend it to anyone looking to host a server for a professional SMB environment or personal use. The thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 ports are great for quickly throwing media onto the drives. This is a fantastic solution for those who dont want to manage their own FreeNAS instance but still want a powerful home/SMB server.

I'm getting around 700mps-1000mbps with black magic speed test with 8 the 7200rpm drives installed before even trying to install the NVMe drives which supposely really speed up transmission speed. I have noticed that the 10Gbe connection does run MUCH faster than the thunderbolt connection which is kind of odd. I don't think I have it configured correctly as the thunderbolt 3 connection should be faster. Buyers may want to consider the 10Gbe connection option that replaces the thunderbolt 3 connections with 2 10gbe. I average over 1000mbs vs around 700 on the Thunderbolt 3. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DEVICE FOR SMALL VIDEO WORK GROUPS THAT NEED TO WORK ON THE SAME PROJECT AT THE SAME TIME. ITS THE LOWEST COST INVESTMENT THAT IS THE FASTEST OPTION OUT THERE. For only two machines its even faster than the ""video"" server with 4 x ssd slots added which costs over 1k more! EXCELLENT DEAL... THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR SMALL VIDEO EDITING WORK GROUPS!

Known Motherboard issue buyer beware: SN Q18 & Q19

These are excellent NAS's for video editing when working. But a batch within the manufacture date of 2018 and 2019 will almost always end in constant reboots and then the red light of death. I originally purchased mine in 2019 and it died after the warranty expired (QNAP still replaced it thank you) and just now my other model 672xt has suffered the same fate. I heard they have a motherboard version 2.0 but the 1.3 and 1.7v are bad. So check your serial numbers. Q18 (some) and Q19 (most) suffer from this.

Manufacturing defects - high risk of failure

Great when it works!My unit failed 26 months after purchase- refused to power on. This was just after the warranty expired (24 months warranty). QNAP did the right thing and extended my warranty to enable in-warranty repair. Still had to pay about USD 120 for one-way shipping to Taiwan. Not a once off case - there are widespread reports of manufacturing defects with this model- some of repeat failures (search TVS-872XT dead after normal shutdown... in QNAP NAS Community Forum).

Pros: Excellent build quality as ever.Cons: Placement of M.2 slots on the board and use of rubber grommets rather than screws and other internal physical structure aspects made insertion and securing rather awkward for me being left handed. Similarly, I found placement of the RAM slots somewhat awkward when inserting upgrade sticks. All fine though when upgrades completed.
