Vitamin D is mostly recognized as being essential to the function of the human immune system and to maintaining healthy bones. However, the health benefits of vitamin D stretch much further than covering these two areas of concern. Vitamin D receptors can be found in at least 36 types of body tissue, and can also influence gene expression of thousands of genes. Some of these genes include those which are associated with detoxification enzymes in the body.
