My 38' tiller steered Catamaran Sailboat came equipped with this device and the wired controller. As a backup, the tiller had rope with chocks to lock the tiller. I have put ~2k miles of coastal cruising in the Atlantic, and this is one of the most useful pieces on my boat. In 30' seas, it "searched" a bit but was good enough for me to sleep 15 mins at a time when pulling 3 day watches while soloing. It would allow me to run below and start coffee etc. It does not easily communicate with the Garmin system, so I use it independent of my Garmin(it can be rigged so for $1000 heading sensor). I have a used spare auto-tiller I bought incase this one broke, I plug it in once a season to make sure it still works but I've never had to use it. The wired controller was awesome but after 4 years it's time to replace as the buttons have failed and it looks like they have gone to a wireless system that requires batteries now which I am not keen on. The wire helps keep it on the boat too.

I have used it on my sailboat about 5 times now. Installation was a breeze. Unit is well made, simple to operate. Seems like it uses minimum power. I especially like the 10 degree course adjustment button. As the wind angle changes, I can just reach over and push the button to retrim the boat. Having it is like having a competent sailor at the helm while I go to the foredeck, take pictures, fish, sightsee or whatever. It makes all the adjustments necessary so I can sail--hands off. Well worth the money. Update: Ive had mine about 3 years now and use it heavily. I have had no problems with it.

I use it on my 28' sailboat when I am singlehanding and raising and lowering the mainsail. I wouldn't use it under sail but that defeats the whole point of sailing, right?

Should have gotten this years ago. Just back form 8 days sailing through San Juan and Gulf Islands. This autohelm was so cool. Actually able to dance on the foredeck with my young children and make coffee while underway. 1979 Paceship 23'.
I didn't even install the ST 2000 Autohelm. I'd read all the reviews. Done all the research. But they don't even make a tiller pilot/autohelm that really replaces my old reliable Tiller Master that was built like a tank back 1972. It's still working, but becoming less reliable after 43 years of service. All the new autohelms built by Ray Marine and Simrad are too short, so even with extenders have to be mounted on the seat of my Newport 30 II cockpit. And, most of the reviews I've read about both mention them starting to falter in less than five years. I guess they really don't make them like they used to. I ended up getting a Simrad TP 32 tiller pilot. It's supposedly oversized for the weight of my boat, but I've found that's the way to go on replacing original ... MoreI didn't even install the ST 2000 Autohelm. I'd read all the reviews. This is my 3rd unit on three vessels, all 26'. Present unit is on a 26' Westerly Centaur, very stable platform but lacks lateral stability. The ST2000+ failed after 5 years and 7000 NM. The ST2000 + never leaked, but was well protected, two screw tabs broke probably due to too many maximum retraction and extensions, then circuit board failed (reason unknown). The unit is presently away for repairs so another was purchased for use and as a spare. I solo so it is required. Overall I have been happy with years of satisfactory service
I do coastal sailing-single handed in a 25 foot boat a good deal. I used wind vanes prior to getting this unit. While I still use the vane often, I use the autopilot downwind and in tight situations (harbors, narrow channels, etc.). Yesterday I sailed 64 miles downwind using a chute and the autopilot handled it the whole time. Remarkable. Great unit.
This is a replacement for an ST 1000 that I buy 20 years ago. Entered in the same calibration settings but does not quite have the same Control stability that the previous one had. Found some calibration settings that seem to work but for some reason this auto pilot wants to make hard left turnsAnd become unstable at times. Still trying to figure out what the problem is.
This is my second one. Replaces one I sold with my last boat. These work great/.
Worth the price after years of saying I didn’t need one I got an older model with a new to me 25’ sailboat and tried it out and loved how it got me out of my marina bay channel into the lake by just picking a heading and keeping it straight under motor power while I prep the sails and lines. That one died so I replaced it with this newer version which keeps even better heading without losing its bearing and beeping. I’ve sailed across a long lake without needing to fuss with it. So much better than using a tiller tamer or lashing on the tiller. I get to go down below for a drink or reapply sunscreen or go up to the bow and dangle my feet off the side while this steers my boat straight and true to the bar up the lake. I don’t know how waterproof it is but I’ve seen ... MoreWorth the price after years of saying I didn’t need one I got an older model with a new to me 25’ sailboat and tried it out and loved how it got me out of my marina bay channel into the lake by just picking a heading and keeping it straight under motor power while I prep the sails and lines. I don’t know how waterproof it is but I’ve seen people sew waterproof cases for them. And I found any issues with beeping or losing bearing was 100% due to voltage issues. I use solar panel to keep my batteries up.
