I have been eyeing the Brawler64 controller since it was first introduced several years ago. Every time a new version comes out I’ve been tempted more and more. Once I stumbled across the Kickstarter for this new Bluetooth NSO version I just had to finally give in. It just arrived today and I couldn’t wait to try it. It is absolutely glorious to use this to play N64 games in a modern way. The N64/Pro Controller swap button is GREAT. Pressing it actually changes the type of controller the console sees you as using. I love that N64 mode is actually recognized by the Switch as an N64 controller as it displays the controller you’re using as the official Nintendo brand unit. This controller is amazing and I’m so grateful that Retro Fighters saw the need for a product ... MoreI have been eyeing the Brawler64 controller since it was first introduced several years ago. Received my transparent blue controller today (a couple days earlier than listed and even a couple months earlier than originally told, so they are already off to a great start!)I turned it on and connected it pretty easily to my OLED switch. Wasn't the quickest connection to the system but it got there (I was also probably really excited so that made the wait seem longer than it probably was). I then fired up NSO and played a level of Mario 64. I was enjoying myself so I decided I would play a few levels of starfox 64 (the two games I spent the most time with as a kid so figured they would be a great comparison). I played a whole run of starfox!I didn't try to change the controller to pro mode but was happy it worked right out of the box in N64 mode. The ... Rumble also worked flawlessly. If you are looking for a controller to play those NSO 64 games then stop reading this review and click the buy now button. You won't regret it

As someone who never owned an N64 but wanted a way to play N64 games with a more proper arrangement, I'm happy to report this controller is exactly what I wanted. My switch detects it as either an N64 controller or a Pro controller depending on which setting its on. Swapping between N64 and Pro mode is quick and the button mapping is as expected. Playing games like Mario 64 was frustrating with the standard Switch controller options, but this N64 modern controller setup is great. Also, the large A and B buttons are very comfortable for games like Mario Kart where you hold it down for basically the whole run.

For many years, I have tried finding a perfect N64 controller for PC purposes for Aki game ROM hacks and nothing has fit the bill. They're very much all rooted in the N64 controller's look, feel, and button setup - especially with the C buttons and no modern-day controller can really replicate that. The Brawler 64 does a perfect job of doing so but with a far better setup for the Z button by having it be a modern-day trigger button while the analog stick is among the best I've ever used. It works wonderfully on the Switch as well, so awkward controls with the NSO N64 lineup are a thing of the past.
Does everything you want it too, with a very comfortable layout. It does even more than one might expect as well. Plus, there are no scarcity issues like with the official NSO N64 controller, which is definitely a good thing! The layout is wonderful for the NSO N64 games. The layout is also very useful for the NES, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance NSO games. The A and B button layout also works incredibly well with some other Switch games, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. On top of all that, it can also be used on a PC by plugging it into a USB port, which opens up the options for the controller even further still. Highly recommended controller, much like the other controllers from Retro Fighters.
This is the only NSO controller you’ll need. I can finally play NES (now GB and GBA) games with the proper B A layout. It’s hard to make Mario run and jump properly with the YXBA layout we’ve had since SNES, at least with the way I use my thumb. Put this controller in pro controller mode for SNES and you’re golden.Of course, this controller was built for and is marketed as an N64 NSO controller. It’s perfect. They modernized the build. The three prong build is visually interesting and nostalgic, but what Retro Fighters have done is great. The buttons are responsive, the joystick works great, and the ever important D-pad is great as well. Highly recommended!
If you are like me and grew up on the N64, then this controller is for you. I got mine yesterday and as soon as it was done charging I hooked it up to my Switch, not to play the N64 emulations, but to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I have never been able to adjust to the pro controller button scheme for Smash. So after changing all four c buttons to jump in smash I am now even better at Smash Ultimate than I have been using a modern day controller. I know people praise the GameCube controller for Smash, but for me its the N64. I did also tried it with the N64 emulation and there is no problem at all playing N64 games on the Switch with this controller.
Really a 4.5/5 but seriously solid. It works flawlessly with NSO N64 games, correct button mapping, access to the suspend menu, home menu, etc. The swap button also works perfectly without even needing to enter the controller change screen. While I doubt I’ll use it as a pro controller, that button is great for being able to access X/Y button functionality that doesn’t exist on the N64 controller. The switch actually reads it as a N64 controller in N64 mode and a pro controller in pro controller mode, as notated by the icon at the bottom of the screen. My one and only thing I dislike is due to the form factor, the A/B button are where a right stick normally is, so my thumb doesn’t naturally rest there. I can get used to that, but I think it could be better if the ... I can get used to that, but I think it could be better if the A/B buttons had a different texture in this format so it’s easier to tell them apart by feel. They are different sizes from the C-buttons, but a different texture would help too.Otherwise perfect, and I definitely recommend. Nintendo can’t keep their N64 controllers in stock so I was very happy to find a solid alternative.
