Ridge Ryder Thermo Cooler/Warmer 24 Litre @ SCA Club

(85 reviews)

Are day trips and picnics your style? A full-size fridge freezer may be overkill! Considering this Ridge Ryder 24 litre thermo cooler/warmer could save you money and hassle. 24 litres, thats enough space for a whole carton of canned drinks! But this cooler is good for much more than that. With a cooling capacity of 25 degrees below ambient temperature, youll enjoy cold water and snacks for the road and even fit a picnic for two in there. Unlike a fridge freezer which uses heavy compressor and condenser components, this thermo cooler relies on the much lighter peltier cooling method. This keeps it well under 10 kilos. With the aid of the included carry strap its ideal to place in the boot, move it to your picnic area, and store it in the shed when youre done. But the peltier method has another advantage. It can warm the contents too! Flick it over to heat mode and enjoy a warm dinner or drinks kept at a delicious 65 degrees. Of course, sometimes its nice to have everything ready the night before so its great having the option to draw power from 12 or 240v sources. Load up your picnic, plug it in at home, and just move it to the car when youre ready. Precision temperature control is taken care of by a 6 stage temperature regulation system. So all you need to do is dial in your settings on the digital control panel, and let the cooler take care of the rest. The Ridge Ryder 24 litre thermo cooler/warmer will make camping food and drink storage easy.

24 litre cooler, very surprised

I bough this 24 litre cooler almost 12 months ago and it’s been surprisingly good for a cooler. It uses about 5amps so it has a big draw on the second battery in the car which sometimes reduces its cooling performance, however on 240v it’s a champion. Currently it’s been running for 5 days in the shed in 25-30 degree temps and it’s sitting at 1 degrees with ice on the element on the inside. Drinks are cold, food is chilled I rate it. I would recommend this cooler and also suggest you run it on 240v to get it down to temp and cool before filling it up and putting it in the car on 12v

12 months later: two adults take this little beauty with us behind the drivers' seat in our Subaru Outback. The trick to it is to pre-cool it the night before you go and stock it full of cold items. Just this weekend, we went to Canberra. We took some packets of plant based meats, a bit of marg in a container, 1 L soy milk and 2 up n go tetra packs. The rest of the space was taken up by 4 or 5 frozen 250ml water bottles. I took the cooler chock-a-block to work and had it plugged into 240V for 8 hrs before I departed directly from work in Wollongong to Canberra, running on the 12V car plug. I ran the cooler on 12V while we drove and switched to 240V from a battery pack (through the inverter) when stopped. At night, the cooler was not using ANY power. It was simply keeping everything cold using the frozen bottles. Not once was anything warm. The up n gos were chilled for drinking in the morning and so was the soy milk for brekky.A few things to mention: the weather was mostly below 20 C in Canberra during the day and down to 8 C at night. I also used some fabric reinforced gaffer tape to keep a good seal on the lid.If you've read a negative review, sure, be mindful that this isn't a compressor fridge. It is also $100 and tiny and light!!! Remember to be smart about your cooling and keep it stocked with cold items. Don't keep it barely filled. Cold items keep cold items COLD. Also, don't expect miracles if you're travelling around during consistently hot days and a bad power source. These thermo coolers are amazing!

had this 2 months, for cost its good value, works as expected. I drive around and work in and out of the car so it's great to have a cool drink when its 37outside. While your driving it'll get to 4deg ok and if you stop and start it'll keep it that way. And good portability with the 240volt option so in my case i can take it into the motel room overnight and load it up with drinks for the next day. Not sure how long to flatten battery but when i'm parked for over an hour i just turn it off. It stays cool for over an hour.

Gets cold inside. Makes droning noise.
8 February 2022

Works pretty well actually considering it's a peltier type cooler with essentially no moving parts (not a compressor fridge) - will maintain fridge-like temperatures in a reasonably warm car interior, but only if you leave it running.Does not have the cooling capacity to cool things down in a hurry if you fill it with ambient temperature stuff, especially if it's warmer weather.Pulls a little more 12v power than a similar compressor fridge (50+Watts) and draws that pretty much the whole time. Being able to plug it into 240v is a nice bonus.Fans have a bit of a drone to them, could be quieter, and don't appear to stop when it gets to temp either. Great but very noise for camping

I chose the 24 litres over the 12 litres which was a good choice. It is hard to pick a Overall Rating as this fridge has great features, like 2 power options 12v-DC to plug in the car and standard 240V-AC.We went camping and it was great as took us 3 hours to the camping destination the fridge was on all the time inside car, cooling drinks and food before we got there.Once we got to the powered camping connected straight to 240V and kept it going preserving the food. (It was summer 28-30C)When we decided to drive to the mountain (summer time 32C) kept our drinks and food preserved in the car again.Great.The biggest issue was the noise. Could they be more silent fans?I was worried that the noise was going to make the tent neighbours upset too, which made me even my sleep worse.Well if you are planning for camping I advise not to by this unit.

Just in Time

My little Kings car fridge had died just out of warranty and I needed another small cooler ASAP. Found this one online, good reviews and cheap. Ordered online and as we were driving through town, we got the alert that it was ready for pickup.Cools quickly, better than the Kings as this has 240 volt as well. A buit smaller, but lighter. The only problem, is it is very loud.

May as well be a fridge!

We took this little thermo-cooler on a 2500km adventure across the state last month as our SOLE cooler. We had it running from a 100Ah aux AGM battery and it never skipped a beat running in ambient temperatures ranging from 10 degrees C up to 29 degrees C. Never once felt that the drinks - cokes and 250mL champagne bottles (that was the REAL test!) were anything less than frosty cold. Little ripper!!I tried the heating function once at home and it kept a hot chocolate hot for ages. So there's that, too!Pros:*Despite not being advertised as a fridge, it may as well be one. Kept everything CHILLED. Drinks icy cold and salad leaves crisp.*Only draws 2.5A*Small size which fit (with room to spare) behind the driver seat in the rear footwell of our 2013 Subaru ... MoreWe took this little thermo-cooler on a 2500km adventure across the state last month as our SOLE cooler. We had it running from a 100Ah aux AGM battery and it never skipped a beat running in ambient temperatures ranging from 10 degrees C up to 29 degrees C. Not rattly or anything like that. We slept within the car and it annoyed me having it on right under my head, so we would always remove the cooler from the car and store it running in the tent outside. All in all, this cooler is terrific value for money and while it isn't a freezer, I'd consider it a real rival to the fridges out there.Serious A+ kit.

Ridge Ryder 12 Litre Thermo Cooler / Warmer
12 December 2021

This portable appliance is excellent value for money, when heavily discounted. I bought it for fermenting Natto and Tempeh, for which the precise adjustable heating control and range is perfect. It has precisely enough space inside for the containers I use, and the convenience of built-in 240v power support and portability makes this appliance unbeatable for my purposes. The option for cooling food and taking it outdoors is just a bonus.

Good sized unit. Can stand bottles upright. Low cabinet height allows ample storage room around it. Can run on 240v before carrying in vehicle, so down to running temp. Seems to hold temp well, while plugged in to power source. Temp will rise with power off, as expectedOverall happy with purchase.

a proper cooler and a bag of ice is better choice!
7 January 2023

I bought it for a road trip imagining that the Thermo Cooler would keep the temperature for a few hours disconnected from the power supply, but in just a few minutes it returns to room temperature. The device does not retain temperature like a cooler, it just has an electronic board that dissipates heat (hot or cold) to the cooler chassis, so you need to have the device turned on constantly. My old cooler and 1 bag of ice a day did the job much better, and without having to worry about turning it on/off every time I get out of the car to not have the car battery flat. The only use of this equipment would be to transport some drink/food from point A to point B, (from home to a picnic for example) where the food consumption will be immediate.Do not expect the ... MoreI bought it for a road trip imagining that the Thermo Cooler would keep the temperature for a few hours disconnected from the power supply, but in just a few minutes it returns to room temperature. The only use of this equipment would be to transport some drink/food from point A to point B, (from home to a picnic for example) where the food consumption will be immediate.Do not expect the Thermo Cooler to remain cold after having the device turned off for a few minutes.Fan noise is also very annoying.
