Been running a jointer on a Shopsmith that works OK but only 4" and needed additional width and a better cut. Have the Rikon 14" band saw and love the quality; the helical head was an added plus with this machine. Easy to replace with no adjustments. This jointer works great, very minor adjustment out of the box and very quiet compared to may other jointer. My first job was with White Hard Maple the Rikon made easy work of that Maple, then did a project in Ash; no issues.Negatives is the dust port is a female size and replacement cutters are sold in a pack that doesn't replace all on the jointer at one time. (I get it with the helical you replace the dull or chipped cutters only) It's much easier for me to do the entire drum at once.I definitely recommend this ... MoreBeen running a jointer on a Shopsmith that works OK but only 4" and needed additional width and a better cut. Buyer Beware! This jointer works fine out of the box. My unit was flat and made nice cuts. I actually liked it until I found out how much RIKON wants for replacement cutters! This jointer uses proprietary shaped cutter inserts and they will charge you $60 for hss and $100 for carbide! And that’s only for 10 inserts. The machine takes 12. That means it’ll cost you $120-200 to replace your cutters when they get dull, more than 4X what it should cost for other machines. And their cutters only have two sides! I feel completely cheated and will never buy another RIKON tool again. This was clearly designed to rip people off. Pass on this one and go buy a benchtop model that accepts standard 4 sided carbide inserts. Shame on you RIKON!

Picked up at Rockler store today. Straight forward set up. Excellent build quality and good overall design. 2 needed improvements: 1. The fence design is fuzzy. Even with the pre-set stops at 90 and 135 degrees after setup, the fence does not always stay true to those angles. The frequent required checks are not very professional. Due to the poor design, the initial setup takes over 45 min. 2. The in-feed table was not factory set properly flat with the out-feed table (at least in my specific case) and is not milled to perfect flatness (although it's within a tolerable range for most applications). It took me another 40 min. of table adjustment. Once properly setup, it does cut quite well. Not sure how well the cutters hold up over time. Caveat: the cut head is NOT helical despite what Rikon claims as "helical style". It's really a spiral cut head where the individual cutters strike the workpiece head-on vs. 'shearing' at an helical angle. I personally think the 'helical style' claim is misleading. These are the reasons that it's not a 5 star rating.

I recently purchased this jointer while it was on sale as part of the black Friday/Holiday specials. It was backordered, so I bought it online and had it shipped to my house. Rockler's shipping timeline was accurate and the jointer was delivered in a timely manner. The jointer was packaged well, but still easy to remove from the box. All the part were in perfect condition and the jointer was easy to assemble. The manual is easy to follow and accurate.I found the jointer easy to configure and it seems to hold alignment very well. After minimal use, I am very happy with my purchase.I made a video of the unboxing and assembly of the jointer. You can find that video here:; https://youtu.be/EHxqnfy1Iww
I am a middle school shop teacher and our old 8" Delta jointer finally became too difficult to maintain (Probably original with the school so 40 years old!). Anyway I purchased this Rikon model as a replacement with some PTA funds. We really don't do much work that would require a wider model so this seemed like a logical choice. The helical head cuts smoothly and the depth adjusts easily. Very pleased with the performance for the price.I have purchased 4 Rikon tools for the schools I have taught at: 2 sander combos, a small band saw and now this jointer. I thought all are of good quality, but the sanders and band saw were slightly underpowered. These were complements to existing stations, so they fit the bill for a school shop.
By benchtop tool standards, a high quality piece. It may not be suitable for jointing boards longer than probably even 3' max, but for all other shorter pieces, it is great and only a matter of precision of set up and skill in the action of running boards through. Yes, since the fence is aluminum, there is the potential for "play" compared to cast iron...but it is not meant to act as a support really vs a guide. The ridged shiny metal does make it a little difficult in using my machinist squares to reset or verify accuracy due to the glare. A burnished &/or solid flat surface would be better. Certainly, having a helical head at this price is a super deal. I had contemplated other manufacturers and models including the 8" Jet, but it was a fair bit pricier and I ... MoreBy benchtop tool standards, a high quality piece. Certainly, having a helical head at this price is a super deal. I had contemplated other manufacturers and models including the 8" Jet, but it was a fair bit pricier and I rarely need to joint boards that wide. The reviews weren't as strong. For anything longer or wider than 3' length or 4-5" in width, unless you're actually doing woodworking somewhat professionally, unlikely you'd even need a larger jointer, in which case a standing heavy duty model is best... Jigs can be made to at least joint long pieces using a basic table saw lengthwise.
My first jointer. It has dramatically changed my productivity in the shop. The cuts are clean, and I really like the versatility of this type of cutter head. Being able to change just one small blade if needed is a real plus.It took a little bit of time to get the fence set up but I haven't touched the infeed or out feed tables. It's pretty good right out of the box. I've had good results connecting my shop vac to the dust port. I literally haven't noticed any dust coming off the machine. The price was right and I'm really glad to have made this purchase.
Nice little jointer. Relatively quiet, very good dust control. It's helical-style, not helical, so the cutters scape rather than sheer. Still, very acceptable finish for the type of work I do. Squaring fence is a little wonky, but manageable. Only serious complaint is the ridiculous cost of replacement inserts, and the fact that they come in a 10 pack. Really? SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than Byrd, and you only get 1/2 the cutting edges/insert. I'm still using (by resharpening) the originals, but will have to bite the bullet soon.
Overall very disappointed in this tool. And am baffled by all the good reviews. Here are my pros and consProsQuietDoes leave glass finishSmall and easy to move around a smallShopConsInfeed table on mine wasn’t close to being flat.New tables sent to me by Rikon also weren’t flat.(one was a little better than original so that’s what I’m currently using)Adjustment for infeed and outfeed tables is hellacious. Very difficult to get this tool operating how it should.Dust collection leaves much to be desiredI would not recommend this tool. Rikon needs to do some re-engineering. Save your money and buy a Powermatic.
it is a very needy tool. It probably took me about a week to eventually get it dialed in and even then if I lay my woodpeckers ruler across it, it isn't flat far end to far end. However, it is finally giving me good cuts so calling it good enough. My recommendation do some test cuts out of the gate before you even think about trying to tune it. That was my mistake and ended up chasing the last tune up each time. Not once, but twice I had to pull the tables and reset them to zero and reset it. Seems like it performs better with very minimal cuts - and I mean minimal - v. big cuts.If you have minimal space or $ to spend, this isn't a bad solution. If you are more than a weekend warrior like myself, save your money and get a bigger and better machine.
