The Rivals for Catan was released in German in September of 2010, on the 15th anniversary of the original card game. An English edition was released in the fourth quarter of 2010. The designer of the game, Klaus Teuber, has stated that he completely reworked many of the original card game's mechanics to make it easier for newcomers to play the game. Each player portrays a prince for Catan, developing their individual provinces and competing to build a more successful province than the other. The basic mode of play is similar to the original Catan Card Game, where players expand their provinces by building settlements connected by roads. Players may also build expansions in their settlements that aid them in various ways, or upgrade their settlements to cities to allow more expansions to be built. This is a fantastic game. Our 7 and 10 year old love it. 2 Player, easy and quick to setup, and the deluxe version has plenty of variation to keep the game fun.The box is big enough to contain everything easily - even after unpacking.The rule book is great and easy to follow. The cards are a good size and the game is very enjoyable.Well worth it and regularly gets used in our house.

I don’t know what all of the complaining is about. This is a pretty damn easy game to learn, just gotta play the introductory game a few times with rule book in hand. The hardest part is remembering what each symbol on the event die does, but that’s where you easily reference the rules. This my partner and I’s new favorite game! It’s easy to learn, yet the strategical depth is there and there is so much you can do! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the board game hobby outside of basic childhood board games.

Catan has been my favorite board game for a long time. During the pandemic my husband and I were trying to find games for two (we tried playing Catan, it wasn’t that fun haha) and we decided to buy the card game. It is really nice to play and very easy to learn. But if you are waiting for something that has the game play like Catan, you are gonna be disappointed, it is very different, at least for my point of view.

Really enjoy this easy strategy game with a few friends. Easy enough that most can play, have good conversations along the way because it’s not too intense. Love how every game is different based on the placement of the resources and roll of the dice.
Love, love, love this 2-player card game. It is a simplified version of the Settlers of Catan board game. My husband and I have played many rounds of this game and we love to bring it with us on vacation. It's simple to transport and doesn't take up much space. Adding in the expansion pack, this game has endless variations for something different every time. The only thing I would change with the base game is the dice/resource cards. I would love it if there were a few extra dice/resource cards for more variation. The way it stands now, each player has the exact same number resource combination every time you play the game. Friends of ours recently introduced us to Catan and we were instantly hooked! So much so that we went out and bought our own. Catan requires strategy, however, it isn’t a difficult game to play. It also allows for conversation to occur while the game goes on. The only drawback is that with this box you can only play with up to 4 people. You’d need an expansion pack in order to play with more. These games can take a bit of time to go though - so that is also something to keep in mind.
If the full version of Settlers of Catan overwhelms you but you want to understand the hype, this game is for you. Quick to pick up and play, I've enjoyed this each time it comes off the game shelf. I admire the hand-drawn art on each card. The game mechanics allow you to play simply or like Machiavelli. And now the deluxe version with the game tray keeps your tabletop orderly. I have fond memories of playing this game with good friends and look forward to creating more!The box is oversized to accommodate both expansions ("Age of Darkness" and "Age of Enlightenment").

Terrible. Basically nothing like the original. Over complicated is an understatement. No way my 10 year old could understand this. Or my 13yo or me, at 34, for that matter. Set up alone took 30-40 min the first time, and that wasn’t even understanding what you were gonna do. Games should be fun, relaxing, and enjoyable; this made me frustrated, crabby and after the first 2 turns we put it away and it will be donated or thrown out. Complete waste of $26, wish I could get my Money back. I can’t express enough how awful this was. Glad I played the original version first because had I tried this one I would have never tried the multi player. Please don’t waste your money or judge the 3 player game on the 2 player version.

Draw an event card that gives you resources for having trade-ships, then use those trade-ships to trade extra resources for ones you need, then build a unit using fewer resources because you have a specific action card triggering from the event die... it can get a little heady honestly. So if you're looking for a shorter simpler game this might not be it. But if you want to spend 30 minutes (up to over an hour with expansions) on building out settlements with unique buildings, environments, and characters that can all work together in really interesting ways, this is your game.I give it 5 brigands out of 5.
