Its certainly better and less intrusive than an NTG2 with a long reach boom in front of a subject.. but gets the job done and conveniently fits in your camera bag, without power source, amp and mixer.

This Rode Mic did plug in to my Google phone (TRRS) and appeared to work automatically with current operating system. It did not make any discernible difference in audio recording quality. As per other reviews, the clip for attaching the mic does not fit over most protective cases; but the clip is removable so that you can use the mic without it and just tape it in place. The dead cat did not seem to make much difference indoors and, also per other reviews, it does get in the way of the camera so that you have to tape that back a little, too.

I was live streaming my band and found that people talking were in our content quite loud. I bought this mic to reduce that, and if needed ,reduce wind noise when it happens. WE play outside quite a lot. The mic doesn't an excellent job of rejecting noises behind it. So VERY little conversations wind up in out content now, and it so happens that it also reduced wind noise VERY well. For the price, I don't think one can do better, really. And it's so easy use: Truly plug and play. One important note make sure the unit buy comes with the wind screen. Some sellers includes it..and some don't ..another reason to buy from an authorized seller..like B&H. I got everything I need, quick, low cost and I spoke to a real human when I ordered who made CERTAIN that the mic was ... I had one of these the last few years, and lost it, recently, so I ordered this new one. It is very convenient for when I suddenly hear an unfamiliar bird, or need to document a rare bird. Sound quality is good. The only problems are that (a) the gray fuzzy wind protector (you absolutely need a dead cat like this to block wind noise, but it comes in the package--no extra charge) falls off easily. Fortunately, each time that I lost it, I walked around in the desert or the forest, until I found it, and (b) the microphone, itself, can fall off, and get lost. You have to constantly maintain awareness of whether or not you have the microphone and the dead cat.

A big improvement over the built in microphone, especially as you start to get some distance between your subject and the camera. For me, the iPhone auido starts to get echo-y once I am about 5 feet from it. Since most of my videos are auditions for Commercial work, the way they like them framed almost always puts me farther than that, so my audio has always suffered. In the past, I would record separate audio and sync it later. The VideoMic Me solved the problem for me! So, I'm getting much clearer and crisper audio without having the hassle of syncing it later. Purchased to complement a Canon EOS-M6. Verdict:, don't bother. It's no better than the camera's own mic. If you leave the camera on auto gain control, the level of hiss is totally unacceptable. If you turn the gain down manually you get good sound, yes, but again, it's no better than the camera's own mic and extra messing around is needed. I bought it to record video based training & presentations as well as general use. I tested it for this use, and also pointed it at other sound sources such as playing music, distant traffic, ambient noise sources etc. Tested at various gain levels and auto.

The Wow Factor: Great because it allows me to focus the mic instead of the omni-directional phone/tablet mics. Overall: This mic works on almost all smartphones, tablets and some cameras. My friends and I tested it on a Galaxy of products, iPads & iPhpnes, a Fire 7 HD tablet and an HD video camera, and it recorded sound about the same as without a mic, except that it focused more on the direction it pointed to and not as much sound from behind the mic. The big furry windscreen is a useful whimsical tool that works well to dissipate wind moving near the mic. Plug any earbuds or headphones into the mic and you can hear what's recording.
