After 6 years, my Roku Express still works fine

I first bought a Roku stick back in 2015 but when Roku Express became available a year later, I snapped one up. It might be the best $30 I've ever spent. Almost six years (and a 6,000-mile move to Asia) later, my Express is still working fine, although the remote doesn't interact as quickly with the box as it used to. My only gripe is that I can't control the TV's volume or turn it off (or on) with the remote, but I knew that when I bought it and what do you expect for thirty bucks anyway? I've more than received my money's worth.What initially sold me was the fact that the Express box doesn't need to be plugged into a wall outlet but is powered by the TV itself. Absolutely, although I suspect an Express 4K+ or Premiere is what I'LL upgrade to when the time comes and some friends might prefer something a little more high-end like the Ultra.All in all, Roku has been a Godsend. I cut the cord in 2016 and KNOW I've saved thousands of dollars since because I only use free channels. I wish I could watch Crackle, all Roku Channel programs and especially Pluto TV here in the Philippines, but that's the way it goes.

EXCELLENT SOLUTION!

I have a little bit older 55in Vizio flatscreen tv that i had in my bedroom. Before i knew it, it would not update my HULU app, and said the new version of HULU was no longer supported by my TV. UGH! Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a new tv when mine was PERFECTLY FINE, I thought i would try the Roku! Easy hookup, worked PERFECT! Love the screensavers and all of the other little free channels and such that is on it. It was TOTALLY worth it! Thanks Roku for being an amazing alternate solution and saving me hundreds of dollars!

Easy to set up and use, great little device.

Opinions about this product were generally good but with a couple of complaints that it wasn't easy to set up. I'm no computer geek, but frankly, it was a doddle! Just two cables, HDMI and USB from the Roku to the TV set and then although there are printed instructions you don't need them as the unit itself guides you through the set-up process with on-screen instructions. I was up and running in about ten minutes. You do have to programme access codes the first time you use some of the channels, but that's no problem. The code is given on screen and you then have to log in to the channel's website and enter your specific code. By the time I was back downstairs, the 'welcome' message was on the screen and I was in business, At least that way I had some exercise! One negative comment I read was that the Roku requires you to register a credit/debit card IN CASE you decide to watch any subscription channels. I found that wasn't the case and I wasn't asked for any financial details. I too tight to pay for anything and only want the BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, etc..

GREAT device!

I've had this on for three months now and it's GREAT! I had a ten year old router and Roku was dropping connection regularly. I had a new router I was intending to replace the old one with so I got it out and did it. Now I have a dual-band router - Roku connects to the 2.4 band and my computer to the 5G. Roku with the lower width band is working with zero drops now in the three months and I love it! Obviously from the price, these entry level Roku devices are made inexpensively and I'm anticipating it will conk out sometime in the next year or so. I might get a better one then, but this one is working very well. Thank you Roku!

Get the Roku Streaming Stick instead

Works fine, but... Having owned a Roku Streaming Stick for some years now, I realize I should have spent the extra money for another of those. The little Roku Express transceiver is light, so any kinks in the cord make it hard to get the unit to stay in place. With the Streaming Stick that's a non-issue since line-of sight is not required, and the whole unit plugs directly into the HDMI input of the TV. Neither Roku get enough power via the HDMI to operate properly, so they need direct AC power. The "simple remote" is my main complaint with the Roku Express. When they say "simple" it doesn't mean it's easier to use, it means it doesn't do all of what it should. It can't turn the TV on/off, and it can't control the volume, so you have to juggle both the "simple" Roku ... MoreWorks fine, but... I like the Roku express. It gives me exactly what I want . I can’t compare with other models because I haven’t tried them yet however this one does everything that I need. The unit is small and very convenient; smaller than a computer mouse. It’s connected to my tv via hdmi. I didn’t have any trouble with connection. It was pretty much plug and play, however you must have a Roku account or sign up for one. It’s free, I guess it’s for warranty purposes, I don’t know for sure. The remote uses two triple A batteries which are included. Picture quality is pristine. There is no delay when changing the channel or exiting apps, unless you have a slower internet connection. Good Points: Bought for kids, had it connected to old crt TV via hdmi to scart converter. I was amazed at the picture quality compared to cable. Was easy to setup and remote is a good size for small hands and I can get signal to device even whilst pointing upwards, if there are any obstacles in front of it. The device can be connected to ypur mobile via app which makes searching very easy. All popular streaming services can be watched ie disney, prime, netfix and theres also roku channel which has alot of free tv and movies. Once you have setup a roku account in order to install the device you can remove your credit card details via account settings on your mobile to prevent accidental purchases. Very cheap compared to monthly cable charges so will probably purchase another.Improvement Points: I tried the screen mirror but oonly displays a frozen picture of mobile screen. I bought this 9 or so months ago for my wife's birthday. At first she was a bit skeptical, haha, and thought I maybe mostly got it for me (...we do use it together, so it's not like she's 100% wrong, lol). But it has come in super handy and has been really easy to use. We have a PS3 for the other tv, but didn't have anything for our second tv - so now we have options for both parts of the house, depending on which is most comfortable for the part of the year.Easy setup. Haven't has any issues with it until last night when there was an error that popped up; it has me disconnect the HDMI and power cords and then reconnect them.
