A Good Gin from the East

A gin by Suntory sounds like an interesting proposal. And an interesting gin this is. This is an aromatic spirit with anise spice, floral, herb, lemon peel, and pepper on palate. It is great either for mixing or on the rock, though I wasn't blown away by it when mixing it with tonic water. I thought it was a little bitter. That being said, this gin can definitely hang with the big boys from Europe. Nice job, Suntory!

The nose of this gin is oily and then floral and juniper. Tea and spice come in later with another hit of rose and then pepper. The palate is oily with juniper and rose tea, pepper and spicy tea. But it is best appreciated in its integration. It Zens or Hums, if you like. I make a mixed drink that is a variation of the Lace Curtain. Ice, one ounce Roku gin, one ounce Haku vodka, and one ounce dry Sav Blanc. A healthy shake of cardamom bitters. Stir. Drain into martini glass and then add one maraschino cherry. The Red Pearl.

I love gin. I try any gin I can get my hands on. This one is by far my favorite gin. The Sakura and green tea notes go perfect with tonic or a cosmopolitan. It’s a light but easy taste on the tongue. This gin is perfect for a beginner who would like to start their gin journey. It’s also perfect for gin veterans. It’s a unique flavor you can only find here.

Brash citrus that is bitter
16 January 2023

I don't think Roku Gin is for everyone. The recipe's distinctive botanicals give it a general bitter taste that works well in select drinks but has a few restrictions on how you can consume it. In a G&T with Jack Rudy syrup and Topo Chico, it tastes fantastic. You must be able to adjust the tonic's balance in relation to the Roku's natural botanical bite. The taste wasn't as good when I used a typical premixed tonic water. I also enjoyed it in a Vesper, where the vodka and Lillet could be tweaked in relation to the Roku to reach the perfect sonic balance. In a Gibson or Martini straight up, I didn't like it as much.

Clearly flavorful, smoothly
16 January 2023

I was given a bottle of Roku Gin by a friend today. Pleasant flowery aroma and citrus flavor, with the well-known juniper flavor in the background. When you take your first sip, your throat feels a little warm, but after that, it flows down smoothly. Extremely smooth and simple to consume; lacks the harshness of higher proof, more heavily juniper-infused London Dry Gins. My mind is already racing with suggestions for cocktails to test this in. Really good neat or with ice (I tried both).

Elegantly Beautiful Gin
17 January 2023

Roku is among the best gins I've had, and I've tried pretty much every well-known brand with a solid reputation. I had high expectations for this gin's execution and drinkability coming from the Suntory label, and it didn't let me down. It has a mild citrus aroma on the nose, primarily lemon or yuzu. It has a wonderful citrus aftertaste that lingers and is incredibly smooth. This gin is so delicious as a sipping gin that I haven't even attempted mixing it yet. Roku offers a level of subtle simplicity that Monkey 47's enormous intricacy cannot. Beautiful on its alone, and the bottle only makes it more alluring. I recently tasted one of the nicest gins I've ever experienced.

My Go To Gin
19 June 2022

Exploring the world of gin is a palatal adventure; herbal, floral, juniper forward, spice… I have been loving the exploration of different offerings. In exploring this world I know that it is very much a matter of personal taste, that said I keep coming back to Roku as my personal favorite.Well balanced, herbal/floral, lovely on the nose. Complex, and yet not muddled or overwhelming. This is a lovely gin that will always be a staple for me.

Not smooth, fairly bland, major disappointment
23 April 2023

Roku has such great reviews we were excited to try it. I always try gins neat then with a little ice before mixing and right out of the gate I found this gin to be relatively harsh. It’s not as junipery as Hendricks (my go-to), and not as smooth as most gins at this price point. Purity is bar far the smoothest gin I’ve had. The Roku is quite good in a gimlet or any other citrusy drink as it covers the harshness and more bitter taste. I wouldn’t buy it again and prefer Hendricks, Plymouth, Botanist, Bombay Sapphire or honestly even regular Tanqueray over this. I love Japanese whiskey but this gin was a miss for me.

Undoubtedly One of the Greats

One of the best gins currently produced, Roku Gin stands apart from the crowd while still smelling and tasting like a gin (My brother, who is indifferent to gin, and rarely drinks it, verified that Roku ""smells like gin — a good one."")How can I describe Roku except to say that it's like what Bombay Sapphire wants to be when it grows up, and what Beefeater dreams of being, if only it had more resources... Wonderful gin, among the finest
16 January 2023

Roku is a really distinctive gin. Nothing else on the market tastes like it because it was distilled with unique Japanese plant flavors. It tastes good and goes well in any traditional gin drink. To preserve the tastes, I like to use it in simpler drinks (e.g. French 75, gimlet, stirred over ice with a twist of lemon, gin and tonic). It's currently, by far, my favorite gin, and I always keep a bottle on my shelf.
