Roland SPD-30 Octapad Digital Percussion Pad
Roland SPD-30 Octapad Digital Percussion Pad (White) - The new Version 2 system upgrade expands the SPD-30’s onboard kit and phrase libraries, and adds powerful new features and functions. The size of a briefcase, the Octapad offered drummers and percussionists the equivalent of an entire electronic rig in one self-contained unit — a new level of convenience and expression. The SPD-30 blends the world’s most essential sounds with the latest triggering technology in a road-tough package that’s ready for the most demanding performers. Unlike the original Octapad PAD-8, which was strictly a MIDI controller, the Roland Octapad SPD-30 is a controller that's packed with its own internal bank of sounds. 99 kits are built into the SPD-30-essential sounds that span a musical universe of styles. You can customize the sounds with the onboard controls for tuning, muffling, attack, pitch sweep, and more. In the Roland Octopad you have a boatload of customizable drum and percussion instruments in one portable package. Based on Roland's world-leading effects technology, the SPD-30's multi-effects engine will take your performances to another level. The Octopad has 30 types of internal multi-effects onboard, plus EQ, limiter, and seven ambiance types. The onboard Phrase Loop function lets you instantly create layered loops and phrases. You can record and store 50 phrases internally, with each containing up to three layers. You can also save your phrase data on your USB Memory. The SPD-30 Octopad benefits from Roland's most advanced V-Drum triggering technology. Each pad is a separate, isolated unit, providing the ultimate in sensitivity with complete crosstalk rejection.

I quickly discovered that when looping, some degree of quantize is always being applied. Even when quantize shut off. And the quantize resolution highest setting is 12ths. Terrible. As far as I can see there is no way around this when using onboard looper. However, you can use quantize funtion within any DAW via USB MIDI. I am using Propellerhead REASON. I have the octapad clock synced as slave to Boss RC50 loopstation where I loop bass and other things as well. One of my primary reasons for buying the octapad was to use it as a midi controller to make drum input more realistic. I have added Roland Kick and PDX 6 double trigger pad for snare/rim shots. My fear is that the triggers on the octapad will lose sensitivity however. I have only had it a month. Its very convenient when hashing idea to have this little octapad setup as I can swap my instruments between guitar, bass, keys, and drums/percussion with out even having to get up. Which makes looping a blast. And soloing for hours... Monitoring in the cans not bothering any neighbors. I give 3 stars because the quantize issue can be a big factor for some potential buyers so if that is something you really need from this device as a standalone piece, buyer beware. No what your getting.-Mjt

I purchased this as an upgrade to my Octopad SPD-30 which I use for recording midi drums in to Logic. I wanted more sensitivity than the Spd pads provide and I have not been disappointed. The PDX-12 is a massive improvement and feels fantastic to play, picking up even the lightest of hits on the mesh or the rim which gives a vastly greater dynamic range than the pads. It’s a great size to play feels extremely well built and I would highly recommend.

I use this primarily as a MIDI controller and, as a percussionist, this let’s me use my skills as opposed to approximate them with finger drumming. Pads can be set individually to trigger two sounds each in a variety of ways, depending on velocity. Super versatile, sturdy, easy to set-up and use. Great value for the money.

This was an add on to my son's Roland electric drum set. When I purchased it I also added the Simmons 50 watt app which is nice because not only can we connect the Octapad and electric drums to the amp but my guitar as well for a short jam session. Once messing around with the Octapad for over a month I got a fairly good idea what it can do. Creating drum loops is fun plus once you create one that you like you can change the tempo up or down. So far I saved 2 on a thumb drive. If you go into menu and go to the list it will have some drum loops already provided for you. One tip I would add is if you connect the Octapad to an amp to use a good cable. I tried a $17 dollar cable with it and I had a Monster Cable on hand because that is what I used for my guitar setup ... MoreThis was an add on to my son's Roland electric drum set. The first thing I noticed is that the chimes sounded more natural and other effects sound crisp. Needless to say I went back to the store and got a monster cable for the Octapad. Well worth it in the end and my son has been practicing more.
This Company Roland I have no faith in there brand. If you have a product problem email make that your first option just to protect yourself. From what I saw in the poorly package box that a 3rd grader wrapped, Very Very shocked and the power cord was missing out of the box. On top of that it's like plugs you need to buy to make this thing worked that you wouldn't have know until you opened the box. After talking to the guy who sold me this product who from what I see was very apologetic to what happen last night. He took this as a lesson, when a customer is buying a high price package open it up. Just to make sure everything is inside the box, You don't have to take it out but a visual view of whats inside will say you guys money. A business don't make money off ... MoreThis Company Roland I have no faith in there brand. If you have a product problem email make that your first option just to protect yourself. Upon arrival, Several screws were missing out of the bottom the unit that clearly shows signs of tampering. upon further inspection, I realize that two of the pads on the far left side were not functioning as intended. They both triggered regardless of which pad was pressed and this definitely impairs the function of the unit. Professional inspection of the unit showed that there was clear signs of moisture damage on both the circuitboard inside and the switches that control the pads. In addition to the pads malfunctioning, the menu dial does not function as well, making it impossible to factory reset or calibrate the unit. The product was displayed as 100% working with no signs of damage. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with the condition of the product.
I recently sold mine- why? because of an omission so stupid it's hard to believe. Obviously these machines will be used for recording for people like me and like me any owner will be impressed by the versatility, the sound quality, the add on pedals and actuators etc. BUT THEN when you come to record the thing plays back at an excrutiatingly high level with no variation and no performance parameters which makes it virtually impossible to use in a mix. I contacted Roland who said that the SPD30 DOES NOT READ MIDI MACHINE CODE!!!!! What a stupid, incompetent and unprofessional omission, it's hard to believe that a company like Roland could do something so stupid. Result? I sold it, bought an Alesis performance pad pro and pocketed the extra 450. The Alesis, though ... MoreI recently sold mine- why? because of an omission so stupid it's hard to believe. Seems very well built, good thick pads. No cross talk. Easy and intuitive to build your own kits and edit sounds. The collection of sounds is good but some are quite dated. You need to know the sounds you want are in there as it is not possible to load any of your own.The looper works well but is not as simple as some of the online videos make it look.Only being able to add one effect per kit is limiting and the effects are themselves fairly limited.Overall very pleased with it, I did my research before buying and new the limitations it had. Expensive for what it is but feels like it should last well if looked after.
Feels and plays solid. Definitely made to be played like a full kit. There's a large library of drums and percussion sounds that can be enhanced and saved. I use a kick pad and a Roland PDX-100 pad for a snare as well as two external pads for a crash and ride cymbal. Response is great! Only drawback is that with such a large amount of memory, you can NOT add your own samples. I knew this before I bought it so it's no big deal. Bottom line: If you're tired of lugging a kit with individual drums, get this! It's solid and it's backed by Roland.
