At last count Royal Canin had NINE (!), board-certified veterinary nutritionists on full-time payroll helping formulate and test their products -- more than any other brand I could find.The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has guidelines that help pet owners pick a diet that is most likely to be good for their pet's long-term health. I would urge all dog owners to search for and look at these criteria. If you are curious who meets these criteria, the Pet Nutritional Alliance has sent survey questions to pet food manufacturers that you can find online. Royal Canin is one of the few brands that meet (and even exceeds) all these guidelines.Why should you care what WSAVA guidelines say? Despite having a huge market share, none of the brands that meet WSAVA guidelines have been implicated in the FDA's report of diet-based DCM -- a very real, painful, and fatal heart condition. I don't believe this is an accident.We've all read the internet sites that purport to know what foods are best for your dog. Don't listen to them. Don't listen to me! Evaluate your dog's diet based on WSAVA's guidelines and (preferably) in conversation with a trusted veterinarian.I think a Royal Canin food consistent with your dog's size, health, and life stage is a fantastic place to start. Moved my 2 year old Springer Spaniel to this after feeding him Purina One from the time he was a puppy. He enjoyed the Purina, but he was getting a little heavy and his boom booms were all small chunked up pieces. His teeth were also very difficult to keep clean because the food was a bunch of little bits. He’s been eating this for about 10 weeks now. He’s slimmer, has more energy and has nice solid bm’s. But the most surprising thing is his teeth. They are super clean just based on the fact that each bit of the food is one solid chunk, not little bits of this and that which would get caught in every little gap in his mouth. Very happy with it and willing to pay more for a healthier pup. A 30lb bag looks like it will last us about 12 weeks.

Royal Canin is vet-recommended and a good brand that I genuinely wanted to work for my girl. Unfortunately, the majority of their non-prescription diets contain some form of chicken which I now know causes insanely dry skin, excessive shedding and licking for my dog. I won’t be able to finish the bag I spent $$$ on since Clementine is no longer tolerating it well and it can’t be used for my other pup who also has allergies. On the bright side, her bms have been great and she definitely enjoyed the taste. Decent option if allergies aren’t a concern.

My one dog is on the prescription Royal Canin Kidney dog food and the other just thought it smelled amazing and wouldn't stop stealing some (the dog that NEEDS the kidney food won't touch it). So, I thought I'd buy her the regular bag and make a switch. She refuses to touch it. For a dog that had to have a slow feeder to keep her from inhaling her food too fast, the bowl stays mostly full for days and she's begging for other things. If I hadn't spent so much money on this food, I'd throw it away and get her something else. When we brought our puppy home, we wanted to give him the best start in life, like all pet parents. I was sucked in by all the marketing hype of small bouquet brands to sell their food. I ignored my vet, who recommended Royal Canin or Hills and went with a trendy little company that uses pseudo-science when formulating its food. My dog suffered from malnutrition. He was always begging me to eat even though I followed feeding directions. The last straw was when he would scavenge for dog feces on our walks. I spoke to my vet, who kindly explained the methods and science used by Royal Canin and Hills. We switched him to Royal Canin, and he is thriving. The poop-eating has stopped along with the scavenging. Royal Canin was the right choice for us!
My dogs have always been very picky eaters. Although the breeder advised that they fed Royal Canin, due to cost I thought I would try some good brands, but less expensive. I even tried the "fresh" foods that are being advertised constantly. (Talk about expensive!) My dogs would eat enough of the other foods to just curb their appetites. I went back to Royal Canin and, they love it! No more problems with eating. Coat, teeth, and health are great. Won't feed them anything else now.
Since my mini golden doodle was on the petit formula dry food I am transitioning him to the medium dry food because he is about 25 pounds and the recommended dog weight for this medium dry food is 23 pounds so I believe it’s best for me to transition into this formula. He has no gut issues or allergies. His coat is shiny and he is healthy. I’m sure he will like it because he loves Royal canin since he was a puppy. I’ve tried switching him over to other more expensive healthier, advertised dry food kibble, and he absolutely did not take well on those options. He’s definitely a Royal Canin satisfied customer!
I won’t feed my dog this food. I received a bag after fostering to adopt. For the price of this product, you would think the ingredients were better…. Normally the ingredients are listed in order of amount in the product. The first one is brewers yeast…. Although this product has benefits large amounts of it is not. The second is chicken by-product, I feel enough has been said about the trash ingredients. I don’t even want to donate it to the shelter.
