Amazing food!

We are hobby breeders of German Shepherds, however choose to do so responsibly (sire/dam both genetically health tested and certified, for instance.). We have always used an AG store to purchase our dog feed, but decided to try a breed specific dog food. We had one litter of puppies on the AG store feed, them switched. Our second litter of puppies were so much “more” from the start. Mom seemed to keep her weight better, and the pups thrives on this food. We started with the weaning/lactating, then moved them to puppy food. We have several people begging for a pup from future litters and we think this is due in large part to the great start they get on this food. We couldn’t be happier with Royal Canin and recommend this to all of our furever homes!

Our GSP was always hungry on those high protein holistic dog food. He's a puppy so he's very active and it seemed as though he was losing weight. No matter how much we fed him he still wouldn't put on some weight and he would poop all day! So we went to vet because mauber there was something else going on, and for the amount of $ we paid for him he better not have anything wrong with him. The vet checked him out and we sent samples in labs were performed and he was good to go. Our vet recommended Royal Canin. So we did the slow transition and just wow! He eats the recommended amount and minimal pooping so he's putting on the weight. Couldn't be happier.

I read into what made this particular dog food special enough to be designated for the specific breed and saw a number of important points of focus that the nutritional content of the food was designed for:- The dog food has the appropriate balance of calcium and phosphorus content to support the puppy's bone and joint growth. This was especially important for my dog as he continues to grow very quickly for his age (as of this review, he is 6 months old and 65lbs; very long and lanky with a large frame and looks like an adult currently; will likely top 100+lbs by full adulthood once the rest of his lean muscle/body fat settle in).- The nutritional formula is designed with easily digestible proteins that allow for easier assimilation for a developing puppy's digestive system and gut flora. The ingredients include a good mix of easily digestible carbs, fiber, proteins and fats (brewer's rice, chicken fat/by-product meal, fish oil, brown rice, dried plain beet pulp and pea fiber, to name a few) that are not too rich for the dog to digest. With an unbalanced nutrient profile, especially one that may include a bit too much protein, the dog's digestive system could reject much of the nutrition, making him sick and giving him bad diarrhea.- The star-like shape of the dog food encourages the puppy to slow down and chew his food for maximum digestion and absorption. I can definitely say first-hand that my dog has a tendency to simply lick up food by the mouthful and swallow it whole with very little chewing in between. The unique shape does give my dog pause to chew the dog food pieces before trying to swallow them whole. So how has the Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy line been treating my dog? Very well. He's a voracious eater and will often go through 3 or 4 servings of food before he's satisfied with his morning/afternoon/evening meal. He's very active with a high metabolism, so he quickly burns through all the food he consumes. As mentioned earlier, he's already a very large dog, already bigger and longer than my 10 year old Lab mix who is right at 60 lbs. Most of his baby teeth have fallen out and his adult teeth are becoming more prominent, which makes chewing on his bones, dog food, his toys and other things that shouldn't be in his mouth (my shoes, garden gloves, basically anything within his reach) an easier task. He's an all-black German Shepherd and his very shiny and somewhat curly coat has been slowly becoming more prominent as he ages into his teenage years and loses his short, matte fur. He's growing to be a very handsome dog.Another major reason that I continue to buy and support the Royal Canin line is that the food is tested and approved according to AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) standards. Royal Canin employs certified veterinary nutritionists to formulate and test their food lines to ensure that they are actually providing the kind of nutritional support that different dog breeds, ages and sizes need. Being backed by science tested "in-field," so to speak, their claims have a bit more weight to them as opposed to other brands which rely on more common buzz words and claims that are intended to appeal to your emotions and what many people assume a particular dog may need as opposed to knowing their ideal nutritional requirements for sure. That being said, I only hope more people take the time to research the food that they feed their animals and opt for brands that can back up their nutritional claims with more than just fancy advertising with cute commercials and colorful packaging. If you can care enough to research the kind of food and ingredients that you consume on a regular basis, then you can do the same for your pets, and Royal Canin has proven itself to be a trusted brand for good quality dog food.

Good name but dog seemed to have hunger issues
5 April 2021

We started the puppy on this at 8 weeks, he is a king shepherd/malamute cross aka Alaskan Shepherd. For the first few months, we thought his excessive hunger was just him \"being a dog\" but when he started to eat foreign objects to curb his appetite somebody suggested we try switching to Performatrin and that cleared up the problem very quickly. The ingredients on the new food seem to be better, and although that\'s not always the best arbiter of quality, the proof seems to be in the results. The dog is not over or under-eating and no longer trying to eat fabric or garbage. After having such good results with the breed formula for the cat, it was surprising that the same brand really didn\'t work out for the dog, and the vet acted like switching to anything but ... MoreWe started the puppy on this at 8 weeks, he is a king shepherd/malamute cross aka Alaskan Shepherd. I\'m going to go with - perhaps it depends on the dog but if I knew somebody who was getting a shepherd or Alaskan shepherd I\'d honestly be recommending the other food and not this one. For the cat, whole different ballgame.

His coat shines, Vet- Exc. health, saves a rescue!
1 March 2020

Nikon has been on this food since 6 weeks old, at which time Vet said she was worried as he was so underweight. We had to take him in every week for a weight check for the first 3 week until she saw that he had caught up to where he should be. at 6 months he is 62 pounds and so full of energy he needed a playmate. Kodak came to us at 8mo. and 52 pounds nothing but bone and skin with ear and skin infections. Vet treated the ears and said see me in 3 weeks of Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy and I am sure the skin will be clear. It has been two weeks and on her back you can feel meat instead of bone and she does not scratch anywhere near as much plus she is begining to shine also. All the dogs I own the rest of my life will be on this food!!!

Horrible choice for GSD! Allergen
9 September 2021

The worst ingredients:/chicken by product? Yuk! just like humans, puppies like junk food. And these ingredients are not healthy for any dog age. German Shepherds are not even allowed to have wheat in their diet because this breed is allergic! and wheat is the top ingredients in this royal canin food!

My go to food for my GSD puppy!
21 June 2022

I love Royal Canine GSD puppy dry food. We have been using this since 3 months of age, for the past year. He has done great on this food! No tummy issues at all. I will continue to feed this until I move him into adult food. Ordering through Petflow, I know I'm getting the best price and feee shipping. I've never had any issues. I've recommended to friends and family!

I have a 10 month old GSD that was born with Enzyme Pancreatic Insufficiency disease. After spending hundreds of dollars on different brands including Veterinary diets, I decided to try Royal Canine breed specific. It's very expensive. But, I was desperate. My GSD loves it, and it's really helped his digestive issues. He's going to always have problems. But, this is only brand of food that actually works well for us. I wish it was cheaper. But....

Well packed.
24 December 2021

Royal Canin is always good expect for the premium price they charge. Usually I order 3Kg packs in Amazon but have bad experience with 12Kg packs there. 12Kg packs usually have rodent bites or something else. First time I'm ordering in SuperTails and that too 12Kg pack. It was well packed and the product was also intact. Also, loved the support from SuperTails team. Cheers!
