12% inflation on dog food... really?

Does Royal Canin make food that my pups enjoy? Yes. Is it feasible that they had to increase the cost of the large bags by $15 each to do it? No. I cannot believe this company claims to have a "Pet-First Philosophy" but can comfortably increase cost by nearly $30 over the last two years. When we started with Royal Canin two years ago, the large 30lb bag was $64-68, it's now nearly $100. We'll be chatting with our vet for a new food recommendation, who knows how much more the prices will rise.

At first I thought the size of the kibble was too big for my 45lb cattle dog but I came to learn it's far LESS DENSE than I thought, so MUCH EASIER TO CRUNCH into. Someone else who reviewed this food had the same concern so that is partly why I wanted to write a review of my own, coupled with the fact that my dogs LOVE THE TASTE!!! Expensive But Worth It
13 May 2023

Moved my 2 year old Springer Spaniel to this after feeding him Purina One from the time he was a puppy. He enjoyed the Purina, but he was getting a little heavy and his boom booms were all small chunked up pieces. His teeth were also very difficult to keep clean because the food was a bunch of little bits. He’s been eating this for about 10 weeks now. He’s slimmer, has more energy and has nice solid bm’s. But the most surprising thing is his teeth. They are super clean just based on the fact that each bit of the food is one solid chunk, not little bits of this and that which would get caught in every little gap in his mouth. Very happy with it and willing to pay more for a healthier pup. A 30lb bag looks like it will last us about 12 weeks.

Good for my picky rescue!
29 January 2021

I recently rescued an adult dog who wasn't excited about meal times and was leaving kibble in the dish for hours, and sometimes only eating half or less of what she should be, even though we fed a quality kibble of another brand that my previous dogs had all loved. I read really great things about Royal Canin, and how many vets feed their own animals this brand. There's a bewildering number of different kinds of RC dog food, so I'd suggest going to their website and using their food selector quiz to help narrow it down. So Day 1, I tried mixing in a little bit of the RC with the old kibble, to slowly transition, as is usually suggested. To my surprise, my pup went through the dish and picked out all the RC kibbles to eat and left the rest! Well, I think that makes it clear what her preference is - and since we fully switched her food over, she's been excited at meal times and cleans her bowl on the spot. We're also already seeing a reduction in her dry skin/dandruff issues, and I'm hopeful that with a bit more time on this new diet, we'll be able to clear it up completely. It's expensive, but I appreciate that she's not wasting food and I know she's getting the nutrients she needs. I think we have a happy customer and will keep her on Royal Canin for life! Thanks also to Petco for making this accessible through same day delivery!

High quality product, dog likes it/is very healthy
13 December 2021

Did quite a bit of research when we got our puppy. There are really only a handful of dog food manufacturers who actually have their own PhD dietician on staff, own their own factories, and produce thier product without contractors. Royal Canin is one of the very few. Not that other food is bad, but many other manufacturers who don't check these boxes are essentially winging it, with less control of the manufacturing process. Much of the dog food business is unfortunately marketing, but my research has enabled me to trust Royal Canin has our dog's best interest in mind. We transitioned from the puppy food to this adult food when she turned one and she did great on both. She is about 1.5 now and I don't see us every switching to a different food.

My picky dog goes crazy for this!
18 November 2020

I adopted an American Eskimo Dog puppy mill rescue near the beginning of the pandemic. In the beginning, I just thought he wasn't food motivated... He would not rush to eat his breakfast or dinner. Sometimes he simply wouldn't eat it at all. I was confused because I was using the same food that his foster had fed him (Holistic Select Grain Free) and she didn't mention having any issues getting him to eat.I started having to add water into his dry food to make it a bit more interesting, and even still, sometimes he wouldn't eat it.When I took him to the vet, the vet told me I should switch to a grain-food, to prevent a certain type of heart disease. Maybe it's also part of him getting acclimated into his forever home, but seriously for months I could not get him interested in food.I think I will probably keep buying this for him forever since he loves it so much! And all his poops have been great on this one too, haha :)

Picky Eater Approved
8 August 2022

My dog's a really picky eater, probably my fault for feeding her so many different things when I adopted her. She refused to eat any dry food for the longest time without additives. This isn't a miracle food in the sense that she'll gobble it up at every meal, but when she does eat, she eats this dry kibble plain [a big accomplishment]. Her coat is shiniest and gut seems healthiest on this food so I'll continue with it, hopefully for the rest of her life :) I am a veterinary student interested in nutrition and will only buy brands that are backed by science and undergo feeding trials.I will warn you - this food is a lot bigger than the medium puppy food!

Size is everything
15 March 2022

My Foster Pup Ginger had been eating Royal Canin Puppy "Medium" size weight 23 - 55 pounds. So naturally now that she is 11 months old, time to switch to adult. Assuming Medium is Medium, I bought the Adult "Medium" size, same weight guide. This food is TWICE the size of the puppy food, she can not eat this. She is a 24 pound Beagle. Of course, when I bought the only bags available from Chewy were the 17 lb bags, so this was a $55.00 dollar waste. I will try and donate. Lesson learned. Very disappointed.
