Best dog food for our GI sensitive pup

We adopted a 6-month-old mutt who had GI and stomach issues for the first few months of having her. It was rare if we had a solid poop. Finally, we took her to a vet who recommended this food. They wrote the prescription and she's not had any stomach or GI issues since. Her bowel movements are normal and we couldn't be more pleased with this food. While it is pricey, it has been worth it for us.

After five weeks of diarrhea, stool samples, x-rays, $600 in vet bills and endless chicken & rice preparation, we found a food that WORKS! Our 8 month old English Mastiff puppy, Jack, started having gastro problems after his 6 month booster shots, that got worse after giving him Nexgard for flea & tick prevention. Now, of course, Jack eats everything in sight, so when it started, the vet treated him with an antibiotic in case the rope from a toy that we had to help extract from his nether-region had caused an infection. After two rounds of antibiotics and a month of bland diet and probiotics, I was becoming frantic because the loose stool and/or diarrhea were not improving. It's very pricey, so I plan to ease him into a mixture of this and his other puppy food, but I am so grateful to have found this and that his vet signed off on the prescription. My anxiety is lifting! We are only on Day 3, so I am cautious, but SO EXCITED for 3 days of perfect poop!

Great food but pricey

My 7 month old puppy had been experiencing digestive issues for over 2 months so after ruling out a parasite, the vet recommended we try this food. My followed the instructions and slowly introduced the food over the course of a week, and the transition went really well. He is having solid stool again, which was the ultimate goal. My only qualm with this food is the price. My puppy weighs 70+ lbs, so we are going to run through this fast. Hoping I can find a comparable option for a lower price tag.

Great puppy food for our German Shepherd puppy with a sensitive stomach
8 July 2021

Our female German Shepherd puppy had diarrhea or soft, mucusy stool since the day we got her at 9 weeks old. We tried Fromm Classic Puppy Dry Food but that didn't work. She was on metronidazole two different times for giardia until the second test came back negative for giardia. With giardia ruled out, we figured she may have a sensitive stomach. Our vet recommended canned Purina Pro Plan GN for sensitive stomachs along with kaopectin but that made her diarrhea worse. It wasn't until we tried Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy Dry Dog Food that her poop miraculously turned solid! We were so relieved. Yes, it is expensive food but it is totally worth it. After feeding her this food for a week straight, we mixed it 50/50 with Taste of the Wild Puppy Salmon Dry Dog ... MoreOur female German Shepherd puppy had diarrhea or soft, mucusy stool since the day we got her at 9 weeks old. Results are great. Ingredients made me nervous.

I was skeptical of this food at first. The people in the pet stores are trained to push their own brands that are either owned by the same company that owns the store, or brands / product lines that are exclusive to distribution through pet stores. This obviously makes sense from a business perspective, but they scared me about Royal Canin’s ingredients. Fortunately, my veterinarian is extremely knowledgeable and explained to me that these ‘grain-free’ dog food cause dogs heart problems later in life, and lots of the smaller brands have quality control problems and limited veterinary science involved in designing those foods. Dogs needs a balanced diet to live long, healthy lives.Going from a food that looked better on the ingredient list, to one that has real ... MoreI was skeptical of this food at first. The people in the pet stores are trained to push their own brands that are either owned by the same company that owns the store, or brands / product lines that are exclusive to distribution through pet stores. Dogs (littermates) are healthy and GI issues cleared up. This food definitely works as advertised.

Seems to help his tummy
6 April 2024

We have a 4 month old puppy who just can’t get his tummy right. This food has helped a lot after being suggested by our vet. He has much more solid poops and it has helped him put on weight. I do feel like he is still hungry all the time! It is hard to know how much to feed since the recommendations are based on adult weight and we don’t know how big he’ll really get. I’ve been feeding him more than what I thought I should and it seems to be working.

Surgery scare and recovery

This food is the only thing that has helped my husky with chronic soft stools and diarrhea have regular poops. He’s has soft stools since adopting at 8 weeks. Got a parasitic infection at 3 months that made things worse and after getting better poops didn’t improve. Fast forward at 6 months old and he had bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and was refusing food and water. Turns out he had colonic intrussuseption and needed emergency surgery. No diarrhea medication, bland diet or pumpkin purée helped even after surgery. Vet recommended a vet diet and I went with this one. Even at 25% I could tell it was helping and now he has completely normal poops. Now I don’t worry as much about my puppy having an overactive Gut and having his intestines twisted again. At this point I don’t care about the ingredients as long as my puppy is happy and having healthy normal poops.

This Food is Magic
13 January 2023

I had a litter of puppies that needed to be weaned essentially overnight at 3 weeks because their mother was ill and put on drugs that affected her milk. After speed-weaning to the food I have been using for young puppies, they had soft stools that would not clear up with pro biotics, prebiotics, any safe remedy I could think of. I think the rapid change was too much for their GI tract to handle. They could eat white rice and chicken breast and get solid stool, but obviously a "white food diet" is not healthy for developing puppies for any length of time. The vet recommended this product and it was like magic, stools firmed up, puppies loved it, a win-win. They have been on it for several weeks now and it looks like they are finally tolerating my attempts to ... MoreI had a litter of puppies that needed to be weaned essentially overnight at 3 weeks because their mother was ill and put on drugs that affected her milk. Works wonders but pup doesn’t love it
26 June 2024

Before I got a GSD puppy I was set on giving her the highest quality kibble I could possibly find. First, she was on Orijen Amazing Grains. She absolutely loved it, but after a few months she started to have diarrhea. Hundreds of dollars later, there were no other possible explanations apart from diet. So I switched the main protein source and tried N&D Lamb and Blueberry. After a few weeks of solid poops, she again started to have horrible diarrhea. The vet gave me some royal canine gastrointestinal food to get her back to normal and mix with a new food. As a last resort I tried Open Farm. Once again, a few weeks were promising then it was back to diarrhea. At this point, I can’t tell you how stressed and sleep-deprived my puppy and I both were. Once again, a few weeks were promising then it was back to diarrhea. At this point, I can’t tell you how stressed and sleep-deprived my puppy and I both were. She would wake up at least three times a a night having to go outside. I was so upset that nothing was working, I was so worried about how all of this would affect her development and how she was feeling. Finally, I went back to the vet in desperate need of help. She finally gave me a full prescription for Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy and within two days my GSD had SOLID stools. We both could finally sleep through the night again, and my dog was so so so much happier. She finally started to act like a puppy again. This food seriously was nothing short of a miracle.Unfortunately, after the first bag, my puppy no longer wanted to touch the food. Even with kibble toppers (sardines, blueberries, pumpkin, etc.). Even with soaking her food in dog-safe bone broth. She won’t readily eat this food unless she’s HUNGRY!!. It’s seriously a full time job trying to get her to eat the recommended amount. This leads to a lot of wasted food, as I can’t leave it sitting for too long. The other kibbles I could use as treats throughout the day, this kibble I have to hand-feed her.Still, I’d recommend this food again and again. It literally was the miracle I asked for. It solved her gastrointestinal issues overnight. Just wish I could figure out how to get her to eat it.

I’ve had the worst time with my new puppy’s gi. I tried at least 4-5 other kibbles before switching to royal canin. It’s been exactly one week since switching, and *knock on wood* it’s the best it’s ever been! She went from diarrhea constantly throughout the day/night, accidents in the house… to now only going 1-2 times per day and mostly normal. Thank goodness my vet approved this food as the final attempt before additional testing. Hopefully I’m not jinxing her progress, but I can say I’ve not had a consistent week since bringing her home. The only negative I have is the price. As a single pup mom, it’s hard to spend this kind of money on just her kibble. Especially after all the vet bills that have been accruing while trying to figure out her gi issues.
