My dog, Wyatt, and I love this so much! I always bring a mat for Wyatt to lie on at restaurants, etc. so he has a “place” to stay and be comfortable in, and my old one was dirty and bulky. This is so compact and chic. He’s currently lying on it in the office. I love that it bundles small enough for me to throw in my work purse and is easy to wipe off. He’s a 60+ lb pit bull, and I got the medium, which works great. If I were using it with the sleeping bag, I might get the large so he has more space to stretch out. Love this product and Ruffwear so much! He has an array of Ruffwear vests that all fit him so well, which is challenging with a meaty little pit.

The pad is great, we got the M and our standard poodle loves it. We bring it to restaurants and it gives her a “place” to relax and lay on. We also brought it on our camping trip and it just gives her a spot where she knows to go and relax. She also got it super dirty on our trip and I was able to scrub it with some soap and the hose and laid it to dry on the fence and it cleaned up great, looks like new. We have also taken it to the beach and she will lay on it instead of the sand which is great for keeping sand out of her fur after a long swim.

I'm back buying another. That's how great it is!

I love this pad. I've bought numerous brands of pads for my service dogs over the decades looking for the perfect pad and was never happy with what I found until the Highlands Pad. Service dogs are expected to "under" when in public, especially when they're big dogs, so that they're out of the way: under tables, under benches, under chairs, etc.Under is usually a grimy place, especially by the end of the day. My service dog's pad needs to be reasonably comfortable, light in color (so that people, like wait staff can see him and not accidentally step on him) and not retain the debris that was under the table. It also should fold or roll up small compact enough that I can carry in in a small tote with one hand because my other hand is on my dog's harness. It also ... MoreI love this pad. It's easy to toss into a backpack. It's comfortable and warm on cold days. Medium and large are both generously sized. My large GSD curls up to on the medium just fine, although the large fits him better.I use mine virtually every day and although, the pads are rotating through the laundry all the time, they show almost no signs of wear.

If youre looking for comfort/cleanliness then its good, for thermals or to pack small not so much.

Starting off its well made. Good materials and stitching and its dog claw resistant. As far as a pad to put down so your pup isnt laying on dirty, hard ground it definitely gets that job done. Took it out hiking and my dog gravitated to it for laying down if I pulled it out. She definitely likes it and went straight to it as her padIf that is what you are looking for the definitely get it. Its not expensive will provide a decent amount of comfort on roots/rocks and keep their fur from picking up stuff. If you're backpacking Id likely pass on it. They recommend it for an insert for the sleeping bag but I dont think its worth it. Not the cost, again its quality for the cost. Its the size/weight. Its very thin and closed cell foam rubber so its not really going to ... MoreStarting off its well made. Good materials and stitching and its dog claw resistant. Its very thin and closed cell foam rubber so its not really going to provide any real R value. Its also not that compressible. Ill probably put it in a compression sack but I think that is going to break up the foam rubber inside pretty quickly. If you're really looking to gain thermals and are OK with something not that packable maybe keep an eye out for a used Thermarest SoLite or Z Lite pad and cut it down. Youll get a thicker/firmer pad and more thermal insulation. Please Ruffwear explore or partner with to get something like a ProLite pad to go with your sleeping bag. Im carrying a shorty for her now but something fitted to the bag would be ideal. A real R value and Id think the insert size would pack as small as a nalgene.

I tried out the new Highlands Pad last weekend (with the Highlands Bed). Here is what I liked/didn't like about it and why I only gave it 3 stars. The waterproof base is non-skid and is great if you're using this in your tent. Everyone who tent camps w/ their dog knows how beds and blankets slide around when your dog jumps in/out. My dog is 70lbs so this is always an issue. I actual wish my sleeping pad had this, though I know that would add weight. I don't know however, if the added cost of the waterproof-ness of the base is needed though. Could make it moisture-wicking or just some other kind of moisture barrier w/ the non-skid surface. The fold-ability/compact-ability is so-so... this is specifically coming from more of a back country camper, so I need it to fit ... MoreI tried out the new Highlands Pad last weekend (with the Highlands Bed). The fold-ability/compact-ability is so-so... this is specifically coming from more of a back country camper, so I need it to fit easily in my pack and the shape of it when it's folded is pretty awkward. It fits well into the Highlands Bed, but I opted not to do that because the bottom of the bed is just the normal denier fabric, which means it'll slide around if I actually tuck this into the bed. I think one of the improvements they could make w/ the compatibility w/ the Highlands Bed is to put either Velcro or snap hooks on the bed to connect the two. Then the non-skid function, when used w/ the bed, would still be in tact. One of the main reasons I put this as 3 stars is this pad is that the description implies it can be used as a pad for 'around the camp site', but beware that this pad is VERY prone to burn through and marks from the slight fire spark. So this is not campfire friendly at all, which almost defeats the purpose of bringing it with me camping since that is mostly when my dog is lying around with me.

L Ruffwear Dog Pad
10 October 2021

This sleeping pad is pretty great! It's lightweight and packable. I took it with me on a recent backpacking trip to Mammoth with my dog. It fit in his L Ruffwear backpack. It was a very difficult backpacking trip (high altitude, rough terrane, lots of miles) and it got down to 20 degrees at night. My dog was exhausted and ended up curled on my sleeping pad so I took his (lol). He's an 80lb German Shepherd mix and it's just not enough padding for him after a long day. HOWEVER, we stopped at a few breweries on the way back and I brought this pad out for him to chill on while we had a beer and it was perfect. Will definitely be keeping it in my truck for day to day and will be getting him a new one for backpacking.

Newt's happy, I'm happy
31 March 2021

I bought this, along with the compatible sleeping bag in a size large for Newt. We used it this weekend and it was in the 30s and raining. He was cozy and warm all night long. My sister got a size medium for her dog. My only complaint is ruffwear advertises that this packs into the palisades pack. Technically they aren't wrong, I can force it into Newt's medium pack, if it's completely empty and it's still a challenge. A small detail, that seems insignificant but that I really love is there's a loop on the bottom of the pad for the strap that keeps the pad folded, the loop keeps the strap neatly under the pad while it's in use and keeps the velcro from getting stuck to everything. I think a stuff sack or compression sack would make this a lot easier to pack and help ... MoreI bought this, along with the compatible sleeping bag in a size large for Newt. Overall it does what it should, keeps my best friend comfy and warm, and it's easy enough to bring backpacking, I will just have to be more strategic in packing my bag and carry it.

Not just for camping!
12 February 2023

We’ve had this pad about 3 years now. It’s been great for backpacking and camping, but just as great when sitting outside at an outdoor restaurant. My dog knows he’s not to leave the pad; I put down a bowl of water on it and some snacks, and many waiters have told me how much they appreciate such a well-mannered dog. Water just beads right off the top and I love how compact it folds. My husband and dog and I take many cross-country road trips and always have this along. Some have complained it has to be hand washed, but I just lay it on the patio and take a garden hose to it; no big deal! A flying ember from the fire burned a small hole in it 2 years ago but it hasn’t frayed or affected the performance. Love this pad!

Rejected by discerning canines
6 June 2022

These appear to be very sturdily made, and I appreciate that they do not mildew easily. However, the dogs are less impressed. They have used them exactly once. I even stacked the two beds on top of one another, and still no dice. Worst of all, the things are constantly blowing away. If you're trying to insulate a dog against the cold ground inside a tent, they made be great. But for Fido to stretch on near the fire? Good luck keeping them out of said fire.

You need a smaller size
29 June 2022

Both dogs instantly took to the pads when I placed them next to my sleeping bag inside the tent. Seemed to help keep them insulated from the cold Colorado mountain ground. I used this pad in conjunction with your Powder Hound jacket. Shake down packing trip had lows of about 40 degrees, no problem for either dog. My only complaint, if it is one, there is not a small size. My dogs weigh about 45 pounds each. The medium sizbed is more than large enough for one and almost both. This size makes it difficult to stuff into a saddle bag type backpack. Both backpacks are also RuffWare bought 2 and 6 years ago.
