this item was not the item needed. i needed the item for (IEC) (?) ten year old hard drive plug- ins. the geek squad ddid not help. i did find an item to plug in my old hard drive on line; in fact it hands both old and new hard drives. That's one problem that i solved myself and there were three others . so... i cancelled my subscription ($199 fee) to the geek squad tech help since i could do it myself without help. it just takes a mountain of time.

Great little device. My old PC failed to boot but luckily my data files, etc., were stored on the secondary 3.5" SATA drive. Removed drive from old PC, inserted into the Sabrent Docking Station, connected USB cable and power cord. Every thing saved! The only thing you might have to do is set the sharing on the drive in order to see everything on it. This device saved years of files. You can also connect your old primary SATA drive to recover data. Well worth the price (which is more than reasonable). I highly recommend it.

I liked the way this enclosure looked and the ease of inserting the hard drive - having the flip up door. Looks aside, I guess I should have read the reviews before purchasing. Here's the problems I had after inserting a 4TB hard drive that was already fromatted and full of data: 1. Showed as Unknown Device in Device Manager. I Uninstalled it from Device Manager , unplugged it from the USB 3.0 port, waited a few minutes and plugged it back in. Now it shows up in Device Manager under Disk Drives as "SABRENT". 2. Now that the PC sees the drive, it does not assign it a Drive Letter. I go into Disk Manager and the drive shows as Disk 1 and the storage showed as 16384.00 GB??? In addition, it showed the partition as a GPT Protective Partition. I spent hours looking this up to see what it meant and how to fix it! After reading a few reviews I narrowed the problem to the Sabrent enclosures stock firmware. It stinks! After finding James Kirk's review, I found out the fix is to download the Jmicron JMS578 Sata USB 3.0 Controller Firmware update (do a web search for it). Connect the enclosure with no hard drive in it, turn it on, and run the fwupdatetool.exe file. In the tool, Load the .bin file that has to do with "Bus Power". When it's done running it will tell you to power off the device. I inserted my hard drive in the enclosure, powered it back on and hoila! My pre-designated Drive letter for the hard drive now shows up in Windows File Explorer and is accessible. All this is way too much for most people to go through to get something to work that's supposed to be "plug and play". I'm glad I was able to get it to work, but I would suggest getting something that works better out of the box.

It Won't Connect...Both units
8 June 2023

I purchased this unit, but can't seem to connect to my pc with USB 3.1. Does it have to be 3.0? I returned the first one as it didn't work either. It doesn't show up in Windows Explorer, but when disconnecting the USB, there is a reference to "SABRENT" without the drive letter. For sure, it doesn't even show up when connected to USB 2.0.I'm running Windows 10 with intel i7. I believe this is a pnp, so there is nothing to it as far as setup goes. The drive I inserted is a brand new WD Red 4TB 3.5" both times. The first time, I also returned the drive, since I didn't know which one was "bad."It also showed up in Task Manager, but again, without the drive letter.I disconnected another 4TB external drive that was connected, but it didn't make a difference.

Only if you have a 2.5", 3.5" is a no go.
29 October 2023

Works well with my 2.5" SSD but not with full 3.5" Disc drive. The system will recognize the drive but will not open to read documents like the 2.5 SSD. I really wish it worked because I was using the 2.5" SSD as my boot drive and the 3.5" as my document drive and I needed all my documents to be easily readable. May have to just use a power supply to supply power to it and see if that is the culprit.I tried many things even reading and updating from manufacturer but I gave up.

Perfect tool to access old SATA drives.
18 February 2023

Over time I have accumulated a number of hard drives from old computers and I wanted a means of checking them for files and wiping them. The Sabrent Docking Station has been the perfect tool. With the docking station you get a power adapter and usb cable, so everything needed to hook it up to your pc. The station accommodates both 1.5" and 2.5" drives, they merely slide into place. As a result it is easy to swap out the drives.Once I turned on the device, my computer immediately recognized and mounted the drive. It made it easy to check the drive for files and to then use my shredder software to wipe the drive. I now have several formatted and blank drives which I can use for archival backups.

What was lost has been found!

When windows 10 came out the popups about switching over or "UPGRADING" as they out it seemed less than optional. I avoided do so for a long time. One day i booted my machine and got busy with life and forgot my machine was running. Need less to say when i got back to my desktop somehow it was mid way through the "upgrade". I later found out my machine had only the bare minimum of requirements for the install and it failed for some unknown reason. This left my desktop useless, non functional and unrepairable with my limited knowledge of dos to bypass the win 10 boot and restore my old operating system, win 8. Works As Expected and a Great Price

This is the perfect way to keep using all those old spinning HDDs and internal SSDs you may have laying around. The USB 3.0 connection is backward-compatible with USB 2.0 and is fast enough to support any drive you may wish to install. The form factor is best suited for 3.5 HDD drives, which pop in and out like a charm. Inserting or removing 2.5 SSDs takes a bit more care and for this reason, if you only need to connect 2.5 drives, you might consider a different docking station or even a direct cable-based solution. But if you need to mount 3.5 drives, or a mix of 3.5 and 2.5 drives, then this is a great solution. I use it with both Mac and PC. I actually bought it to replace a more expensive two-bay external unit, which had an internal power supply, but which failed within a few hours use. This unit was the best best alternative and so far, it's worked perfectly. I chose this model over the fan-cooled version because I don't like fan noise and because I only use the device for simple backups and file transfers. My drives never get hot enough to require a fan.

An external chassis docking system is the perfect solution for working with them when you need them outside your system. We do this type of activity fairly often. When family and friends are done with their computers, they often give the computers to us to empty out, refresh, and donate to a new cause. We’re also the go-to people when family members have drive failures and need help restoring them. Our external chassis stays in pretty much constant use.In essence this chassis provides the connectivity a drive needs to function in an environment outside the protective shell of your desktop and laptop. It has a power connector which plugs into a standard wall plug. It also has a data connector which in this case is USB 3.0. The combination of standard-use connectors makes the docking station easy to move around from system to system.I will note we do NOT recommend using this as a “permanent” solution if you want to keep this type of drive out on your desk for long term use. The setup is meant to be portable and easy-in, easy-out. So it’s great for repairing or cloning a drive. You’ll want something far sturdier if you want to keep a backup drive on your desk for months. That being said, this Sabrent chassis has worked like a charm for us. No problems at all. It’s helped us through a number of hard drive repairs and data transitions.Well recommended.
