Got these just as fall was hitting the mountains and they have instantly become my go to wet weather boots. They are extremely comfortable and broke in pretty quickly, I just wore them around the house for a few hours before taking them out on the trail. They offer great support around the ankle and handled sleet and puddles extremely well, keeping my feet dry in some nasty weather for a few hours. Surprisingly light for the durability, and held their grip even as things got dicey with slick, rocky ground. Excited to use these through the rest of fall and into winter!

I've purchased and extensively used about 7 pairs of Salomon hiking boots and shoes. This is my first pair with CSWP. This liner, in my experience, makes the boot much warmer than gortex. My feet are so warm that the CSWP boot will not be used for summer hiking. My hiking boots using gortex have been comfortable in summertime temperatures on the PCT. This boot will not go on the PCT. Everything else about the boot is good and what you expect from Salomon.

I wanted to try out a pair of Salomons so I ordered myself a pair of these. They seem very well built, the rubber the tread is made of is quite sticky so it should grip on rocks and loose surfaces well and they also feel quite comfortable despite my own issues.Unfortunately, I've got a pretty wide foot (3-4E) and the regular width just doesn't do it. They're a relatively narrow shoe in general, but the midfoot and heel were more narrow than the toe box. I might re-order these in a wide and see how those work, if I do then I'll leave another review.

Great shoes
3 June 2023

I bought these to use for tactical shooting classes and hiking. The first weekend after purchase they were put to the test in a two day tactical carbine class. It rained nonstop tropical storm level downpours. Our instructor was from the Pacific Northwest so we moved forward with the class. Shoes were comfortable for two 10 hour days and my feet stayed completely dry. Will be buying more in the future.

Incredibly comfy.
17 October 2022

I've tried too many hiking boots to count over the past month, and pretty much all the mid Salomon boots, and the Pioneer's came out on top. I've got about 30 miles in them already and they are so dang comfortable. For the first 5 or so miles the front/toe area was really cramped from the cushioning, but after they broke in, there is now wiggle room and feels great. They're a bit thicker on the sole, but not so much that you don't feel anything - Enough to help grip and feel the terrain. They grip great on climbs and rocks. I'm definitely happy with the purchase. Long hikes my feet feel great, and that's what it's all about.

It was a great thing from the start
1 December 2022

When I first got them they were amazing. The boots hugged my feet perfectly and the ankle support felt like it gave my feet wings. After about 6 months of wear and tear the soles got extremely soft to the point you could feel rocks through the padding. Right around the same time the boots stopped being waterproof and some stitching came out. They are amazing boots but I wasn’t very pleased with the longevity of them.

Lot’s to be desired

I started my journey with Salomon’s Quest 4D 3 and the Ultra GTX 3’s as well. The Ultra GTX 3’s are my favorite shoe to this day. This, unfortunately, does not live up to the quality and expectation. Even the Ultra GTX 4 is a shadow of what the company used to produce. I tried both boots through a third party and returned them the same week. Salomon dropped the ball in the recent years with whatever decision prompted them to lower the quality of an already great boot. It hurts to say that I USED to love Salomon as they fit me like a glove and unequivocally provided the most versatile and capable mid boot. That’s no longer the case as the Pioneers are a single exterior layer as opposed to two stitched strengthening layers on the exterior. There’s no other way to say this: they’re cheap. Holding a pair of Pioneers in person, all I could think to myself was “are these genuine, or did I purchase fakes?” They look and feel like knockoffs. But nope, they’re Salomon’s unfortunately.

My Third Pair of These Shoes
1 April 2023

I recently bought my third pair of these shoes. Previously I bought them primarily as a lighter-weight alternative to heavier or less durable backpacking boot. I wore them on week long trips into the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area in eastern Oregon, always the first week of June with a group of high school students. The elevation was high enough that we frequently dealt with snow and always with wet and muddy trails. We crossed several snow-melt flooded creeks on downed trees, which are wet and mossy, or on rocks in the stream. I felt like I had generally had good traction. I never deliberately waded into the water with these shoes, but sometimes I might have had a missed step one foot immersion. I don't recall that this presented an unusual wet foot problem. Now I wear ... MoreI recently bought my third pair of these shoes. People say I should wear high leather boots because of rattlesnakes, but I personally haven't seen any yet. These shoes are light, comfortable, durable. I appreciate the more muted visual tones of this particular style since I don't just wear them in the woods.

Poor collar design
31 August 2022

Bought these in summer 2022 and noticed the collar on the boot flared out at the top, which struck me as odd. I took them out on a regular basis, and every time I would come back with debris all down the inside of my socks and the bottom of the boot. The flaring collar acts as a basket and funnel - some of the debris you kick up will end up inside the boots. This includes leafs, rocks and (as I learned hiking in Scotland), anything that sheep may have "dropped". Not only does this destory socks, it means you have to take these off occasionally in terrain that features a lot of pebbles.I tried tying these tighter and sealing them in a variety of ways, but nothing worked. On the upside, the waterproofing held up for me, and they were comfortable from the first ... MoreBought these in summer 2022 and noticed the collar on the boot flared out at the top, which struck me as odd. comfy, a little narrow in the toe box
25 May 2023

Bought earlier in 2023, and just beginning to wear them. I like the lighter weight compared to other Salomons, but still has a very strong grip. I find the toe box a tad narrower than other Salomon’s, but it’s not fatal. The fit is still good. They do warm up, as one other reviewer has noted. Since I’m recovering from an injury this season, my hikes will be shorter, but, they may be a bit warm for some on longer excursions during the summer.
