Long time fan of Salomon snowboarding boots. These hiking boots are on a whole new level and seem to take from the snowboarding boots. The tongue articulates with the rest of the boot to give a close molded feel without pinching. The whole boot really locks your heel in. The triangle lace locks on each side really help with that. The tongue pull handles are nice.Mine were instantly close fitting and did not need break in. Great grip up and down hills. Super comfortable and supportive. Love the ankle support. Laces tie and stay tied. No need to double knot.Toe is wide enough but not considered wide. I would prefer slightly more wide. Did not test the waterproofing yet. Sometimes I catch the inside lace lock to the other boot. Time will tell if this is an issue or ... MoreLong time fan of Salomon snowboarding boots. The balance of stability, durability, lightweight, and comfort of this boot is the absolute best. This is my go-to for big rugged days or even when I need a full high waterproof boot on snowy trails. I even use them for hunting since often times bushwhacking in rough terrain comes into play. They provide incredible ankle support with a lacing system that is snug and doesn’t loosen as you hike. The sole is grippy, I get zero hotspots because the fit is dialed, and these things will last years. When I need my most ruggedly capable hiking shoes, the Quest is what I reach for! They’re the shoe ya wanna marry, ya know? Loyal, steadfast, full of adventure for the long haul. Love love love.

There is nothing really positive to write about this boot if you intend to hike in any wet environment. Two copies failed waterproofing on first hike in same region of the boot. On our first hike out in snowfield, both mine and my wife's leaked in the same places and we had to contend with our cold wet feet for the rest of the time. There appears to be a design issue, where the Goretex and upper are strained at the toe joints and start to leak water in after working them in briefly. In the past years, we have tolerated Quest GTX limited endurance, knowing that the waterproofing will completely fail in about 1-2 months of hiking (that is about 2 trips), regardless of the Nikwax application, which is just an over-hyped short term bandaid for an actual membrane ... MoreThere is nothing really positive to write about this boot if you intend to hike in any wet environment. I'm not sure what special version website reviewers and bloggers receive where they wear these day in and day out for a season without any leaks or issues and report this as "best rated boot"...I would beware the hype. They have always been weak on membrane but now worse than before. Our experience was in line with other reviewers that had major water ingress issues, and it is time to move on to another brand/line...

I am in between sizes (7.5/8/38) and most often size up to an 8. I have wide feet and I need a really wide toe box. I went down a half size (7.5) leaving room for a swelling-they feel great. Enough room to wiggle my toes while having enough structure to support my inner arch and ankles. Often I am loosening the laces in the toe box which leaves me a little less supported around the top of my foot or heel. I don’t have this problem wearing this boot. Actually, I still have room to tighten the toe box if I am going down hill. If I went down to a size 7 they would definitely be too narrow around the arch. The “mids” are taller than most. I prefer the height- it offers more structure around the ankle without being too stiff. I got these boots for backpacking. They were a bit stiff in the ankle area and didn't really soften up so I had to change the way I laced them, which inevitably allowed a bunch of small rocks to get inside while hiking. I liked their overall comfortability and fit and they seemed to have good grip on rocks, but after my 5th hike the rubber over the toes started coming up on both feet. As the rainy months endured, my feet did not stay dry. Water crept in through the falling apart rubber, tape wouldn't keep it in place, and I'm not sure I liked the waterproofing of the leather or GoreTex areas either. While I'm a fan of Salomon, I was not a fan of how fast these fell apart. My last pair of leather and GoreTex boots lasted 7 years, these less than 7 months. I purchased a gently used pair of these Salomon's from the REI Used Gear online shop, which is a great addition to REI's shopping options. For my first wear, I walked 2 miles home from work in them and had no issues with blisters or hot spots. The next day, I wore them on a muddy, rocky, and steep hike above Whittier, AK. They performed really well! They offered me excellent traction on slippery board walks, moss covered rocks, scree, slick dead leaves on trail, and scrambling up a few steep parts. They also kept my feet completely dry even though it was raining and I stepped in numerous creeks on the hike. I appreciate the taller height on these as compared to my Salomon X Ultra's because I stepped in a pretty deep mud hole, but it didn't overtop my boot and my ... MoreI purchased a gently used pair of these Salomon's from the REI Used Gear online shop, which is a great addition to REI's shopping options. I really wanted to like these boots, broke them in during several rainy hikes. They are extremely moisture resistant. These boots are not for climbing or hiking around rocks or rugged terrain with rocks. There is a 1/4" lip in the back of the boot that nearly caused my death multiple times at high altitude in the rocky terrain of the Himalayan mountains in Nepal. The rear lip on the boot would get stuck navigating boulders and rocks in the most inopportune times between me and 12,000 ft - 17,000 ft down the side of a mountain. Not to mention throwing you off balance on uneven surface areas of rock because that 1/4" lip. These boots are heavy to begin with. Maybe too heavy for mountains and provide little ability at finesse through large rock because they are bulky. ... MoreI really wanted to like these boots, broke them in during several rainy hikes. These are going back to the store. I would not recommend these for anything but straightforward dirt trails.
I have complained about three (!) Hiking boots in the ladt 6 years!! Salomon accepted the complaint citing material or workmanship fault. Each time I have received voucher for new Salomon boots which have fallen apart EXACTLY IN THE SAME WAY AS PREVIOUS PAIR!! I have lost all faith in Salomon product by now, yet because I am given voucher not money, I am forced to get another Salomon product, which seems as vicious circle! On the top on the faults that all three boots developed, they were completely NOT WATERPROOF AND HAD NO TRACTION AT ALL, VERY SLIPPERY! which was a concern when scrambling for example. The only good thing I cam say about Salomon boots is that they were comfortable, but this means nothing when you have wet feet or are afraid of falling due to poor ... MoreI have complained about three (!) So I bought these shoes May 2020. I have had these shoes for 2 yrs and have wore them to two camping/trekking trips (essentially about 4 days total). My first wear i came back with skin peeled at the top of the shoe because it was rubbing against my lower leg. I tried loosening the top but then my ankle support would disappear. I wore longer socks and still it would rub and pinch against my leg that I had to wear bandaids to help with the pain. After my first camping/trekking trip, I gave them another shot thinking I must have broken them in after the first use. I was completely wrong and I had to cut my hiking short because the pain was so bad. My shoes are practically new. I spent so much money because I trusted they would feel confortable but they were unbearable. You’ll see that my shoes are still like new because I just couldn’t use them after two times in 2 yrs. I purchased them here directly because at the time only the salomon website had the color I wanted in my size. And they did not accept used returns so I was stuck with them. Save yourself the trouble and do not purchase these overpriced hiking shoes.
Fellow Keen-loving bigfoots looking for backpacking boots, beware.I bought these hoping they would be a unicorn; I am looking for boots to cross rivers in Alaska for a week straight, and these are reviewed as being wide in the toe box/narrow in the heel, which is what I need… well, they might be “wide” if you’re not used to Keens. I don’t know what my width measurement is but it’s wider than this boot. I wear a 11 in every Keen women’s original fit hiker. This boot was fine for length, it had the appropriate thumb’s width beyond my 27.6cm big toe. It’s noted as a euro 44 and I have a very hard time believing that measurement is accurate, it’s more like a 43 at best.My toes hurt from being squeezed by the narrow toe box after wearing them around the house for 10 ... MoreFellow Keen-loving bigfoots looking for backpacking boots, beware.I bought these hoping they would be a unicorn; I am looking for boots to cross rivers in Alaska for a week straight, and these are reviewed as being wide in the toe box/narrow in the heel, which is what I need… well, they might be “wide” if you’re not used to Keens. I can’t decide whether to try men’s sizing of this style as the reviews for that boot are terrible. As many other reviewers mentioned, the lacing is weird. The part that is supposed to heel lock seems like it would be a huge pain when donning/doffing boots in the backcountry, possibly in gloves. My biggest issue perhaps though is the insole. It is basic, very thin foam and must be replaced; however, adding any additional volume at all would displace my heel from the boot’s heel pocket, and would rub like mad. I already have blister issues so that’s a non-starter. Building a boot that cannot have an upgraded insole installed is a horrible oversight by Salomon. Overall, no way these will work for my big, wide feet.
