Exceptional overall design and construction :)

Because Solomon have now lengthened and widen the toe-box a little too much, they’ve slightly overcompensated now. It’s simple if you have wide feet get the wide model. I do not. There is exceptional underfoot comfort with good arch support but I would like to see even more arch support in the OrthoLite insoles, and the height of the drop is totaly perfect. If Salomon makes the toe-box any bigger it's going to be too sloppy, as it is already slightly sloppy already for me compared to the Speedcross 3s which I admit were snug. Never had the 4s. The Speedcross 5 GTXs are by far the best Outdoor Gore-Tex Sneakers on the market! I am the one that requested Salomon to bring GTX / Gore-Tex model here to the States, so thank you Salomon :) I’d like to see the toe-box shortened by 1 or 2 mm as well as the 1 or 2 mm in the width, as the toe-box has become a bit too sloppy now. In years past with some of the complaining about the toe-box being too narrow Salomon has now overcompensated to much unfortunately, but the design and construction is excellent! I have now purchased three pairs because I like them so much, I would just like to have the toe-box slightly tweaked/decreased by 1 to 2 mm a bit. It would be cool to see this exact same upper with midsole with a hybrid tread geared for slippery tarmac conditions, and also a mid version with some ankle support. GearFreakNY Approved!... Maybe your next favorites (except the sole)?
14 November 2021
I’d give the shoe overall a 4+, except for the sole. the cross 5 is quality— breathable yet still good in cold. im used to minimalist trail runners so it is bulkier, but thats good for rock protection (which i needed) and still lightweight. Soles: i used to never understand the hype behind vibram soles, but after a couple pair of non-vibram salomons, i get it, and may actually be the main factor in my not getting another pair of salomons? i’d give salomon soles a 2; they do wear down way to quickly as others state. Fit: very nice, very comfortable, well thought out debris protection over tongue, etc . maybe just a little loose around the ankle, but again, im used to NB minimalist trail runners that are very snug (on my 5th pair). a feature id like to see (i had a ... MoreI’d give the shoe overall a 4+, except for the sole. the cross 5 is quality— breathable yet still good in cold. im used to minimalist trail runners so it is bulkier, but thats good for rock protection (which i needed) and still lightweight. Ready Out of The Box
14 August 2020
Let me start by saying that I am not a dainty hiker. I'm a brute on the trail and go right through the good stuff quickly instead of keeping my shoes clean. I've owned both the speedcross 3s and 4s and have always enjoyed their durability and these new 5s seem to enjoy their success. I tested these with a tough/muddy 11 mile hike in the Adirondacks directly out of the box, I never even wore them around my house to break them in. Initially I was worried, as I thought they might be too big and cause slipping/blisters even though they were the same size as my last two pairs. It turns out there is just more room by the toes so they don't feel so claustrophobic and they stood up to my test just fine. The tongue is a little longer so its easier to tuck the lace in as well ... MoreLet me start by saying that I am not a dainty hiker. The tongue is a little longer so its easier to tuck the lace in as well as more comfortable at the ankle bend. Even after getting a little wet they dry off very quickly and are very breathable. The stud patterns were excellent in propelling me through mud and over rocks and tree roots with minimal slipping. The only thing I DON'T like are the two "antennas" in the front of the shoe. (two studs like on the bottom but are at the very front of the toe) I'm sure they help in the mud, but I feel as though they are a little too high or come out a little too far as they caused me to trip on the way down 4-5 times. Nothing serious, but just enough to catch a small stick or root and hiccup the stride. I'll probably end up cutting or filing them off. Even so, these are a fantastic shoe and even more comfortable than the previous generations and very worth the money!... Show more

Solid Performance, But a Decline in Quality
7 September 2024
I bought my first Speedcross almost 10 years ago and decided to revisit it. I had a lot of fun with that shoe back then, and it worked well for long distances. The pair I just purchased has a similar feel, but the materials and design seem to have declined. It feels and looks bulkier and a bit “cheap.” However, I can’t complain about the performance and how they function during runs.... Show more

Sooo Comfy! Great Support!
6 January 2023
If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, don’t scrimp on shoes! I have really high arches and so I’ve searched far and wide for a shoes that will provide great arch support. I’ve tried all of the name brands, spent hundreds of dollars on the ”top-of-the-line” all to still have to wear my orthotics. Enter Solomon. A buddy of mine recommended I should try them so I hit the local store and bought my first pair. That was five years ago and I’m now on my fourth pair of Speed Cross. They work great as a golf shoe, a running shoe or casual out on the town. Looks especially great with no-show socks and shorts! I no longer have to wear my orthotics. My second pair had a lace eyelet tear through and the pocket to hide the laces on the tongue seemed not to keep the laces laces tucked as well as my first pair. This my second pair was nearly to the end of their life with very little tread left when these issue occurred so they were pretty tired. Build quality between my two new pair seem identical no differences that I can tell.... Show more

Terrible Salomon Experience
3 November 2022
I bought this shoe since it was high praised by all and advertised as rugged and durable. After being in the box for a month, I took them out on their first outing on an easy groomed gravel trail and then began climbing relatively steep, clean terrain. Immediately the upper portions of the shoe that are welded above the mesh started to peel back and cause flaps. Now everytime i walk in grass or just a dirt patch pieces will get stuck in these flaps and its uncomfortable.Note that customer service is horrendous for Salomon. I bought these through Sail but Salomon policy forces people to go through Salomon instead of retailers. Even after the short hikes I started noticing wear on the shoe right away. Recommend sticking to paved or graveled easy routes, nothing too advanced.... Show more

The SpeedCross 1-4 were perfect for narrow feet...
22 May 2022
Updates in the SpeedCross 5 sadly leave us narrow/ low volume feet people seeking a new line of shoes - it's a much bigger shoe! I'm sure the wider/ higher volume fit with stretchy toe box works well for most technical trail runners with normal to wide feet, but so do the majority of other shoes out there - including many other Salomon styles. I know the "squeaky wheel gets the grease," and I've seen hosts of complaints about the SpeedCross being too narrow for most, BUT most shoes are too wide for me and there are very few shoes out there for the low volume narrow fit mens foot. I've logged well over ten thousand miles on the SpeedCross 1-4 on technical trails and got an ankle injury on my first run with the 5s from my foot slopping around in the shoe (literally ... MoreUpdates in the SpeedCross 5 sadly leave us narrow/ low volume feet people seeking a new line of shoes - it's a much bigger shoe! I hope the 6 returns to the classic fit and that the 5 either dies or turns into a new line with a different name. I spent thousands of dollars trying shoes before I found the SpeedCross 1 over a decade ago, and both myself and my feet would prefer to not go through that search process again. Salomon, what shoe (yours or otherwise) would you recommend for those that the the SpeedCross 5 updates fail? My only positive about the shoe is that the larger lugs seem like they'll hold up better on rocky trails.... Show more

This shoe has exceeded my expectations!
25 September 2020
I am starting to train for obstacle course races in 2021. When I first started looking for footwear, I was overwhelmed with all of those "Top 10" & "Best of" reviews & comparisons. Being frustrated, I asked experienced OCR racers on a Facebook group that I am a member of for their suggestions since footwear is the most important and expensive thing to purchase for an OCR. The overall consensus of my inquiry led me to either this shoe or one other, but I liked a lot more features on this shoe such and that it is more for a heal strike type of runner. On a road trip to over Labor Day, I happened to come across an REI dealer where I could physically try these shoes on and was glad I did. Normally I have to wear wide shoes for extra room in the toe box because the front of my foot is wider than average due to wearing toe shoes for several years. The wide shoe I tried did feel good with plenty of room for my toes, but I nearly had to tighten the laces completely, so after I would have broken the shoe in after a while, the width would have been too big on me. When I tried on the regular shoe it felt amazing, I could tighten them a little better while still being able to tighten them more as I wear them more, and to my surprise, there was still plenty of room in the toe box.I have taken these out on local trails a few times and purposefully walked on uneven terrain, rocks, gravel, grass, through some mud, and up & down some hills with varying grades to test them out. These have exceeded my expectations on all terrains & not getting completely caked after going through mud causing them to lose grip.... Show more
