4x4 of shoes, The 5's are best so far...

I sprint, hike and climb with full confidence.I totally recommend.P.S. If you're a daily runner, get two pairs to ensure dry starts.

A great shoe with muddy conditions and snow

This is my second pair of Speedcross 5 GTX. I put 500mikes in the first pair and could probably have done much more. They are still in perfect condition and the grip still pretty good. I run 2000 miles per year and do ultramarathons. I use these on my shorter runs in winter (conditions get very muddy or snowy here in th Pacific North West) up to 15-20 miles (I would not go much longer because they are a little heavy). They are perfectly waterproof and keep my feet warm and dry even in extremely wet conditions. The grip is exceptional in mud or on snow as well as rock, even wet. They are extremely protective around the toes which is useful when you hit a stone hidden under leaves. A great shoe for badass winter runners.

Great shoe, Abysmal Waterproofing

I bought these for backpacking in CA in spring and early summer, when there is more snow and rain. And yes, I understand that waterproof low-cut shoes have natural drawbacks.Overall, the shoe is very comfortable and I felt the support was nice. I like the feel of walking in them right away and they fit my somewhat narrow foot very well.Unfortunately, this goretex version suffers from a critical design flaw. The tongue (which is not any kind of waterproof, and in fact, behaves like a sponge) protrudes dramatically from the top of the shoe, but also runs down over the top of the foot and under the goretex liner. The protruding part of the tongue gets wet from rain and wet plants over the train, the moisture spreads to the long part of the tongue on the top of the foot underneath the goretex, and every steps wrings out the tongue into the shoe. The goretex liner keeps all of that water in the shoe for a long time. After probably an hour of walking while wearing rain pants, both of my feet were squelching wet, and stayed wet all day. The laminated/welded outer of the shoe keeps the water from escaping from any orifice except the foot hole. The next day, I put the wet shoes on with gaiters and experienced basically the same problem. After the hike at my car, I dumped out a visible amount of water that had pooled in the bottom. The shoe has been drying upside down over a sink in my laundry room at 75 degrees for more than 4 hours and a quick test shows they are still soaked. For comparison, my partner wore full leather boots on the hike that were also squelching wet and they are mostly dry in the same configuration.5 stars for the shoe, but down 2 for the waterproofing flaw. I would expect that the non-gtx version of this shoe would actually perform better in wet environments.

I’m gutted
7 March 2022

After doing some slightly obsessive research, I settled on the speed cross 5 gtx because of their seemingly impressive specs. Unfortunately, they’re possibly the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever bought. I’m a size 12uk and whilst the length is ok, they’re extremely tight in the middle. They feel a bit like the plastic ice skates you hire at the ice rink. I’ve tried to grin and bear it hoping my feet/shoes will adjust but I just get blisters every time: I can’t wait to take them off.The lace design is cool however most of the pressure is at the very top.The heel area is very solid and uncomfortable due to the junction where the goretex lining is. Which is the cause of my blisters and has already showing signs of wear/fraying after only approx 100km of use. ... MoreAfter doing some slightly obsessive research, I settled on the speed cross 5 gtx because of their seemingly impressive specs. The goretex works great. They look awesome but ultimately I feel like I’ve bought an expensive sports car with all the extras, but gives me chronic back ache to drive. These shoes aren’t cheap and I blew my budget on something I can’t wear so will have to find an cheaper alternative :(Wish I could go back in time and spend the money on something else or return/exchange them.Help would be hugely appreciated to find a solution but if not my wife will just remain mad at me for spending so much on something that sits in the closet.

Light, robust and grippy!
7 September 2022

Lightweight yet robust; excellent inner sole (one reason why I have 3 pairs of Salomon footwear at the moment!); excellent lacing system; very grippy tread pattern giving lots of confidence when on hill terrain.I like the colours of the upper - but the orange tread would not be my first choice. a personal thing!Again, a personal thing, I find the sizing to be 'spot on'; I tried the size down and it was too tight around the toe. The size I now have is a wee bit roomy and slightly long but can adjust this with sock choice.

Purchased and received a pair of Speed Cross 5 GTX recently and this pair is no where as comfortable as the previous pair. Same size and style as what I have had, but this pair is much tighter in the toe box, the arch support is higher and longer than in the previous pair (and the other 5-6 pair of Salomon’s I have owned or still own).Initially I thought those issues would improve. They have not after regular use over the last 4-5 weeks.I waited for these to come back in my size (12.5 US) as I have had such good experience with them. I do regret waiting and also purchasing these shoes.Fit consistency has been an issue with the 12.5 and 13 sizes I have owned from Salomon. Perfect for the trails in any weather

Needed a pair of gore-tex trail running shoes with some more cushioning than the Arc'teryxNorvan LD 2 GTX (which are great and highly recommended if the specs fit your bill). Went to REI (Tysons corner) and these felt really good immediately with a good fit and I ordered the GTX version online at the store. I would say they are a D+ / regular width and not "narrow", but also not EE. The construction of is to be snuggish around your foot (which is not the same as narrow), which I love and I really don't like roomy running shoes. I'd say they are true to size. In a perfect world I like size M13.5 (which really don't exist except for the ASICS GT-2000 which I have for non-trail running) and these 14s are a tad longer than needed. So far they've been great on muddy ... MoreNeeded a pair of gore-tex trail running shoes with some more cushioning than the Arc'teryxNorvan LD 2 GTX (which are great and highly recommended if the specs fit your bill). Looking forward to also use them in snow where think they'll shine as well. I don't think they are heavy at all but feel and look just right in their right element.Just got them so cannot comment on durability. So far very good and recommended.

As with all the speedcross shoes I’ve had was able to wear them up the hills straight out of the box.Differences (between v4 and v5), and my thoughts/experience:- Lug size increase/change. Seems to make the shoe much more aggressive, particularly going downhill (on rocky/slippery dirt trails).- Shoe feels much higher off the ground than what I recall with previous versions. Definitely is, and by a lot, when put next to my other versions, but of course the lugs on them are well worn down.- Higher collar at the back. Read some reviews saying this caused rubbing for some, I haven’t experienced that.- Got the GT version this time (first time out of 5 pairs). Women get all sorts of colour combinations. I had to settle with the pretty boring black/phantom combination.Note: Much credit to Athlete’s Foot. Not only was the purchase price for these the lowest of anywhere I looked, price included delivery and they arrived the next day.

Show started falling apart in hours
2 August 2022

They seemed liked they would have been a comfortable and high performing shoe. I was not going to keep them as they started to fall apart after only a few hours of wearing. The toe started de-laminating and the thin side laminations we're coming off too. I did contact Solomon and they told me to work with REI. REI refunded my purchase. I was once a Solomon shoe fan boy but I think this may be my last purchase. My experience with each purchase has been trending in the direction of lower and lower quality.
