Salomon Speedcross 5 GTX

Every day 10-15 km trail runner with my best four paw buddy which includes traversing mud, rocks, tree roots, train tracks, streams, everything under and over the forest including sandy beaches ....I've tried, but never found a better shoe.Cons: GTX gortex is not waterproof, more like water resistant. Trust me, not complaining no shoe is waterproof. I run in snow, rain and mud and river, lake and ocean water, they do incredibly well. Also, they wear out, the old 4's in about 3 months, the 5's have made it to 6+. Sole is better glued, lugs bigger and that helps long-term and material also lasts longer.Pro's: There's nothing better on the market. The soles, lugs are solid for running and climbing. I sprint, hike and climb with full confidence.I totally recommend.P.S. If you're a daily runner, get two pairs to ensure dry starts.

This is my second pair of Speedcross 5 GTX. I put 500mikes in the first pair and could probably have done much more. They are still in perfect condition and the grip still pretty good. I run 2000 miles per year and do ultramarathons. I use these on my shorter runs in winter (conditions get very muddy or snowy here in th Pacific North West) up to 15-20 miles (I would not go much longer because they are a little heavy). They are perfectly waterproof and keep my feet warm and dry even in extremely wet conditions. The grip is exceptional in mud or on snow as well as rock, even wet. They are extremely protective around the toes which is useful when you hit a stone hidden under leaves. A great shoe for badass winter runners.

And yes, I understand that waterproof low-cut shoes have natural drawbacks.Overall, the shoe is very comfortable and I felt the support was nice. I like the feel of walking in them right away and they fit my somewhat narrow foot very well.Unfortunately, this goretex version suffers from a critical design flaw. The tongue (which is not any kind of waterproof, and in fact, behaves like a sponge) protrudes dramatically from the top of the shoe, but also runs down over the top of the foot and under the goretex liner. The protruding part of the tongue gets wet from rain and wet plants over the train, the moisture spreads to the long part of the tongue on the top of the foot underneath the goretex, and every steps wrings out the tongue into the shoe. The goretex liner keeps all of that water in the shoe for a long time. After probably an hour of walking while wearing rain pants, both of my feet were squelching wet, and stayed wet all day. The laminated/welded outer of the shoe keeps the water from escaping from any orifice except the foot hole. The next day, I put the wet shoes on with gaiters and experienced basically the same problem. After the hike at my car, I dumped out a visible amount of water that had pooled in the bottom. The shoe has been drying upside down over a sink in my laundry room at 75 degrees for more than 4 hours and a quick test shows they are still soaked. For comparison, my partner wore full leather boots on the hike that were also squelching wet and they are mostly dry in the same configuration.5 stars for the shoe, but down 2 for the waterproofing flaw. I would expect that the non-gtx version of this shoe would actually perform better in wet environments.
