Great at first but quality dwindles over time.

I loved these for the first year. They were comfortable, lightweight, and breathable all while providing toe protection.I first must say i started wearing these as everyday shoes. I'm guessing that is not what they are intended to be. If you walk on concrete sidewalks the treads immediately wear away. As an everyday shoe it is starting to stretch out and becoming very uncomfortable. What was a comfortable shoe has now become one of my least comfortable shoes. If you are buying for tail running it probably will be fine. If you are doing anything on concrete or hard surface just know the tread goes away fast. Also this tread style doesnt do great on wet surfaces.

Maybe your next favorites (except the sole)?

I’d give the shoe overall a 4+, except for the sole. the cross 5 is quality— breathable yet still good in cold. im used to minimalist trail runners so it is bulkier, but thats good for rock protection (which i needed) and still lightweight. Soles: i used to never understand the hype behind vibram soles, but after a couple pair of non-vibram salomons, i get it, and may actually be the main factor in my not getting another pair of salomons? i’d give salomon soles a 2; they do wear down way to quickly as others state. Fit: very nice, very comfortable, well thought out debris protection over tongue, etc . maybe just a little loose around the ankle, but again, im used to NB minimalist trail runners that are very snug (on my 5th pair). a feature id like to see (i had a ... MoreI’d give the shoe overall a 4+, except for the sole. the cross 5 is quality— breathable yet still good in cold. im used to minimalist trail runners so it is bulkier, but thats good for rock protection (which i needed) and still lightweight. Needed a pair of gore-tex trail running shoes with some more cushioning than the Arc'teryxNorvan LD 2 GTX (which are great and highly recommended if the specs fit your bill). Went to REI (Tysons corner) and these felt really good immediately with a good fit and I ordered the GTX version online at the store. I would say they are a D+ / regular width and not "narrow", but also not EE. Looking forward to also use them in snow where think they'll shine as well. I don't think they are heavy at all but feel and look just right in their right element.Just got them so cannot comment on durability. So far very good and recommended.

Salomon has me on go!
5 July 2022

My job requires my head to be on a swivel for 12 hrs straight in both a customer service and public/staff safety environment. My physical response time is critical for the safety of patients and staff. The Salomon speedcross is the best shoe for this task. Its not a big bulky hot heavy boot that prevents both mobility and flexiblity. This shoe allows traction on all surfaces hard floors, grass and pavement. Seconds matter!! Bates, Under Armour, 5.11 and other tactical boot company dont get it. This not iraq or vietnam a boot is not necessary. Its Salomon PERIOD

Show started falling apart in hours
2 August 2022

They seemed liked they would have been a comfortable and high performing shoe. I was not going to keep them as they started to fall apart after only a few hours of wearing. The toe started de-laminating and the thin side laminations we're coming off too. I did contact Solomon and they told me to work with REI. REI refunded my purchase. I was once a Solomon shoe fan boy but I think this may be my last purchase. My experience with each purchase has been trending in the direction of lower and lower quality.

Sierra rugged, everyday comfortable
30 July 2022

Bought my first pair of these for an off-trail backpack trip in the eastern Sierras last summer. They were great, and I continued to use them for hiking, walking, and casual wear throughout the year. Did another eastern Sierra hike this summer, and bought a new pair, and again they were perfect for the demands of talus, scree, granite slabs, snow patches, and stream crossings. No blisters or hot spots on my feet, even having only broken them in minimally. And so comfortable that after hiking 12 miles out on our last day, I just kept them on for the 6 hour drive home to San Diego.

Sooo Comfy! Great Support!
6 January 2023

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, don’t scrimp on shoes! I have really high arches and so I’ve searched far and wide for a shoes that will provide great arch support. I’ve tried all of the name brands, spent hundreds of dollars on the ”top-of-the-line” all to still have to wear my orthotics. Enter Solomon. A buddy of mine recommended I should try them so I hit the local store and bought my first pair. That was five years ago and I’m now on my fourth pair of Speed Cross. They work great as a golf shoe, a running shoe or casual out on the town. Looks especially great with no-show socks and shorts! I no longer have to wear my orthotics. My second pair had a lace eyelet tear through and the pocket to hide the laces on the tongue seemed not to keep the laces laces tucked as well as my first pair. This my second pair was nearly to the end of their life with very little tread left when these issue occurred so they were pretty tired. Build quality between my two new pair seem identical no differences that I can tell.

Terrible Salomon Experience
3 November 2022

I bought this shoe since it was high praised by all and advertised as rugged and durable. After being in the box for a month, I took them out on their first outing on an easy groomed gravel trail and then began climbing relatively steep, clean terrain. Immediately the upper portions of the shoe that are welded above the mesh started to peel back and cause flaps. Now everytime i walk in grass or just a dirt patch pieces will get stuck in these flaps and its uncomfortable.Note that customer service is horrendous for Salomon. I bought these through Sail but Salomon policy forces people to go through Salomon instead of retailers. Even after the short hikes I started noticing wear on the shoe right away. Recommend sticking to paved or graveled easy routes, nothing too advanced.

The SpeedCross 1-4 were perfect for narrow feet...
22 May 2022

Updates in the SpeedCross 5 sadly leave us narrow/ low volume feet people seeking a new line of shoes - it's a much bigger shoe! I'm sure the wider/ higher volume fit with stretchy toe box works well for most technical trail runners with normal to wide feet, but so do the majority of other shoes out there - including many other Salomon styles. I know the "squeaky wheel gets the grease," and I've seen hosts of complaints about the SpeedCross being too narrow for most, BUT most shoes are too wide for me and there are very few shoes out there for the low volume narrow fit mens foot. I hope the 6 returns to the classic fit and that the 5 either dies or turns into a new line with a different name. I spent thousands of dollars trying shoes before I found the SpeedCross 1 over a decade ago, and both myself and my feet would prefer to not go through that search process again. Salomon, what shoe (yours or otherwise) would you recommend for those that the the SpeedCross 5 updates fail? My only positive about the shoe is that the larger lugs seem like they'll hold up better on rocky trails.

good traction but sockliner insert bunches

I bought this shoe about a year back to start running OCR. Unfortunately before I ran my first race I broke my ankle roller skating and was down for around 6 months. Soon after I had rebuilt strength in my ankle I ran my first mud run OCR. I was super excited about these shoes and had done some "dry" trail running previously. Unfortunately, immediately after my first water obstacle when I was going down a hill the Ortholite sockliner bunched up underneath the ball of my foot. I tried stopping to straighten it out but it just continued to bunch up. I ran a Spartan Sprint today and the same exact thing happened. It's really disappointing considering the incredibly high reviews on the product. I also am unable to locate replacement sockliners on Salomon's website.
