I've had at least 6 pairs of X-Ultra (original, 2, 3, and now 4) over the years. They've been my go-to shoe for everyday wear and light hiking. The 4 has taken a big step in the wrong direction. As some other reviews have commented, the pocket for stashing the lace pull is harder to use; the super tall piece sticking strangely up from the heel is uncomfortable and constantly interferes with pant cuffs. And most importantly, something about the black plastic-y pieces on the sides and the way the laces tighten has changed the overall feel & comfort for the worse.I should have just returned them but wore them for a while in the hopes they'd get better over time. I have used Salomon products for years and find them to be of good build quality and performance. I have a very similar Salomon shoe to this one and I have loved them. I have a wide forefoot and the previous shoe had a nice wide toe box. This shoe ordered in wide is lasted very differently. Not the wide toe box of my previous shoe. These new shoes do fit but not with the same excellent fit as the previous shoes (XA Pro 3D). I’ve had perhaps 6 pairs of - ultra 3 - Gtx and non gtx. Perfect fit, really comfortable. Used for heavy duty walking like Cape Wrath Trail. Kept on buying because of fit and grip - even though they weren’t that long lasting - all developed a hole where the fabric meets rubber toe cap at flex point, but usually at same time as sole lost it’s grip due to mileage , so I excused that. So I bought the 4 Mids with high expectation. Felt a little cramped, but new boot, not uncommon. Then on long cross Scotland hike my big toe nail went black and painful, and stayed that way for months. Such was my confidence in previous boots that I bought another pair in hope it was a quirk of that particular pair - but same thing happened - another few months of pain. . The X Ultra 4 is the one! Also, some waterproof low-cuts have a too much rise at the outer ankle bone, causing a rub that becomes annoying after short while. (Even some Salomon low-cut's I tried years ago had that problem.) The X Ultra 4 gets that just right too. I also like the new Contagrip tread. It's a cleat-style, open pattern. The tongue is a bit funky too with the kangaroo pouch for the laces being a bit too far forward so tucking the laces in is unnecessarily finnicky.Quality-wise, I haven't had any issues yet but they're only a month old and have only around 50km on them. No serious concerns on this front despite many other reviews stating the opposite. We'll see how they handle after a year.Overall a step down from previous versions and with such a premium price tag, I will expand my search next time to other brands to see what they have to offer.

The next pair lasted about a year before they developed a split in the upper. They were replaced under warranty but the replacement pair split at the heel and caused blisters after 14 months. The fundamental problem (and this to some extent was true of the second pair) was that the cinch laces are just way too short causing excess pressure on the heel when getting your foot in. I looked on the website and found that this was a common complaint in the reviews. I then bought a really cheap pair to tide me over which actually lasted twice as long as my previous Saloman shoes. Needless to say they are going back. Clearly Salomon don't listen to feedback so I doubt that this will have any imact.
I tried on these shoes in a store and they fit like a glove. Like they were made for me with no heel slip at all. I wanted a different color so ordered from Salomon online. Unfortunately the left shoe fits just like the one in the store and the right one slides on my heel as bad as any shoe ever has. Looking more closely at the construction, the left shoe has a nice heel cup that holds nicely and the right shoe has been constructed with a very flat profile that does not 'cup' the heel. Gives me a heel blister on my right foot unless I apply a patch of moleskin prior to wearing. Very disappointing and makes me think the consistency of construction is not there. Like they were made for me with no heel slip at all. I wanted a different color so ordered from Salomon online. Unfortunately the left shoe fits just like the one in the store and the right one slides on my heel as bad as any shoe ever has. Looking more closely at the construction, the left shoe has a nice heel cup that holds nicely and the right shoe has been constructed with a very flat profile that does not 'cup' the heel. Gives me a heel blister on my right foot unless I apply a patch of moleskin prior to wearing. Very disappointing and makes me think the consistency of construction is not there. I recommend not buying this shoes online and only buying from a retail store where you can try them on first.Aside from that, great traction, great lateral stability, good balance of light vs sturdy construction for day hikes, if the shoe fit properly I'd love it so far.
I have worn the x-ultras and gx 3s for six years. In 2021 solomon changed the sizing of their shoes, making them run much narrower. I bought a pair online the exact size and model as prior years without trying them on in 2021, and they were way too tight. Dont buy hiking shoes online. Go to REI and try them on first.I tried the ultra 4s on and they seemed to fit funny (narrow and with a weird arch placement) but i thought they would wear in a bit. Buying a wide for the first time in my life, my foot fit in the shoe. I went on a three mile walk in them and quickly noticed two "design flaws". First, the shoe string tightener has changed, and seems to loosen up over time, meaning your shoe wont stay tight the way it should. Second, and much worse for me, the cloth/membrane on the tongue is a little thin and loose, so bunches up if the tongue is loose. The shoe pivots right at the top of the toe box, which is where the cloth bunches up. This gives you a lump of shoe pressing down onto the top of your foot with every step. With some adjustments, this can be fixed for a while, but comes back over time. Having to stop every half mile to fix your shoe is not worth it. With proper fit, maybe this can be resolved, but i could not get it to work. On my way to return them and switch out of solomons for the first time in 7 pairs of shoes.
I bought the boots for a recent trip to Ireland which would include some hiking. Once the boots were broken, they felt great on my feet.In the wild, the boot really shined. My daughter and I hiked up Mount Brandon on the Dingle Peninsula. If one thing can test gear, a hike on the West Coast of Ireland will do it. The boots held up flawlessly with a variety of surfaces (mud, water, rock, grass). On our hike temps dropped from around 45F to less then 30F with winds exceeding 35 knots steady with rain and ice pellets. The boots (combined with proper hiking socks) kept me feet dry and warm throughout.On another hike to a secluded mountain lake, we had to do some light scrambling. The boots again kept my feet warm, considering how light they are. Felt solid on the pedals of my Fat Bike. Temps on the ride were around 20F. Granted any colder and I would use my insulated boots.Only time will tell if I experience the same quality complaints expressed by others, but after three months and what I considered challenging conditions, these boots are awesome. Bring on the next adventure.
