Beware of the fine print and poor quality

Here is the response -- Remember that ´´Part(s) repaired or replacement product(s) during the Warranty Period will be warranted for the remainder of the original Warranty Period provided replacement or repair has been performed by SALOMON or an authorized SALOMON retailer.´´I understand why they do this - they don't want someone making endless claims, which apparently could happen if the two pairs of shoes I purchased from Salomon are indicative of their quality. So, they wouldn't replace the second pair for me, which wore down in 9 months after wearing them only on the weekends. Needless to say, third time won't be the charm.

Again, I believe this to be "just my luck" as it only happened in one shoe, but i feel the cause of this is due to the chosen material.

When I purchased these, I had already owned the MID version of these hikers (same size 12) for about a year and love them, so I thought these would be a slam dunk. I was wrong. Although they look very similar, the lacing system and uppers are different. The idea of the speed laces is nothing new, but if you need to adjust the tension between say, the forefoot area and tongue area, forget about it. This particular system is so "slippery", that even if you hand-adjust one area and then snug it up to keep one section a bit more slack, they will eventually be too loose everywhere. I bought the wide size (which fit well in the MID version), but they are not quite as wide in this low shoe, hence why I need to keep the forward area a little less tight.More concerning ... MoreWhen I purchased these, I had already owned the MID version of these hikers (same size 12) for about a year and love them, so I thought these would be a slam dunk. I bought the wide size (which fit well in the MID version), but they are not quite as wide in this low shoe, hence why I need to keep the forward area a little less tight.More concerning though, is the way the shoe breaks right at the bend point behind the toes. The V-shaped component on the outside that is part of the speed lacing system is a stiffer and harder material that the rest of the upper. When the shoe breaks, the forward edge of that component digs into the top of my foot toward the outside and creates a very uncomfortable pressure point. I thought that perhaps this would lessen after break-in, but not so far at least. Since the lacing system doesn't allow proper adjustment fore and aft, my "remedy" was to get rid of the speed laces altogether. This was no small feat in itself, as the plastic inserts that act as eyelets required removal just to be able to swap in a slightly bigger diameter traditional boot lace. Not ideal, but at least I can now adjust the laces to my preference. The issue of the pressure point has not totally been eliminated, though (30+ miles later), so I guess I'm stuck. As great as the soles are, I'll have to relegate these to easier terrain because of the lacing situation. Since I can't get the uppers just right comfort-wise, they have to be too loose to do things like bouldering or rocky trails. Disappointing, given that I wore the MID version shoes almost the entire winter without issue.

Great shoes, but lacing system is questionable.

I’ve had these shoes for over 16 months now, and have been very pleased with them. I have narrow feet, and they fit snugly with support everywhere I want/need it. Lightweight, good traction, flexible and comfortable; I really love the shoes—best hikers I’ve ever owned. However, if I could change the lacing system away from the quicklace to regular laces, I’d do it. There are certainly advantages to this system, especially (at least theoretically) if you’re in a hurry to get your shoes on or to adjust them while on the trail. But one of my laces is fraying, and after researching what’s involved in buying and installing a replacement set of laces, I’m really not looking forward to taking on that project. Also, because of the design of the laces one of the shoes doesn’t open up as far as necessary to comfortably slide my foot into it, so they take longer to put on than they should. Finally, the little pocket where you’re supposed to tuck the excess laces is a pain to use, so unless I’m hiking through heavy brush that might snag them, I just let the lace ends hang out and flop around. No harm, no foul.Overall, really good shoes. Unless you know you like the quicklace system, though, I’d suggest you get something from Salomon with regular shoelaces.

I purchased these 18 months ago. I did a fair amount of hiking with them but not overall that much. Mostly have worn them around the house and yard. The cord tie is good if you want to basically use them as a slip on shoe. If you want to tighten them for a tougher hike they tend to loosen up quite a bit and I have to keep pulling them tight multiple times. Recently, I noticed a hole on the top of the fabric that just appeared for no reason on both shoes except that is where the fabric creases when I walk. Now I have shoes with holed in the top so I doubt they're still water proof. Unfortunately a few months ago I purchased another pair for a hiking trip to Europe. This is a 5 week trip. I've had other hiking shoes that I still have 5 years later and use them only for messy jobs as the soles wore out before the fabric or leather. This will not be the case with these shoes. A year in they I would have rated between a 3 and 4. 18 months in they rate only a 2. I will not be buying a third payer. Buyer beware.

Salomon has been my "go to" hiking shoe and backpacking boot company for decades, so it is with regret that I am writing a less than positive review about the Ultra 4 GTX. That said... every foot is different, you may love them, but my review shares some common themes with others.1. Although the quick lacing system is nice for slipping them on/off, you can't do any custom lacing such as having the toe box tighter/looser than the heel/ankle, a real drawback for experienced hikers who use this technique to accommodate differences in terrain or slope, or foot condition over the course of a long day(s).2. Salomon's "Advanced Chassis" claims to "target articulations on the outer foot for optimum stability...", and that's true, it's a wonderfully stable shoe, but the chassis transfers a disproportional amount of load/pressure to the outside edge of your foot, and at the end of a 20 mile day with a 25 lb. load, I had bruising on the outer part of both feet, something I'd never experienced before with Salomon or any other shoe for that matter.3. The heel/ankle box has what I believe is a wire, running horizontally about an 1.25" above the sole and the padding over that wire at the back of the ankle is thin to begin with and wears out fast, leaving the wire to rub the back of your ankle. Normally this can be at least partially remedied by varying lacing tightness, either snugging up the ankle so it doesn't move as much, or loosening it to provide more room, but you can't do that without adjusting the fit of the entire shoe (see #1 above).4. In the pursuit of lightness (which it is), Salomon appears to have sacrificed padding, everywhere, but most notably in the sole. It's not a huge problem for days under 10 miles, but if you're pushing above 10 you can expect to feel that lack of padding in a profound way.In summary, I've had just about every Salomon predecessor of this shoe and I used to love them, but the following sums up what I believe has happened more and more with each new iteration ... a) lightweight, b) ruggedness, c) comfort... pick any TWO because you can't have all three. The older Salomon low hikers used to be comfortable and rugged, but albeit a little on the heavy side. These Ultra 4's are lighter than their predecessors and are still very rugged, but comfort and adjustability was sacrificed to an unacceptable degree (in my opinion).I still love the Salomon Qwest series backpacking boot because it's not trying to be something else... it's rugged and comfortable, and unapologetic about its weight. The Ultra 4 is in my opinion is a day hiker, or low mileage multi-day shoe.I'm pulling for you Salomon... you can do better.

Salomon used to make a decent shoe. I had the previous version for almost 8 years and many miles before they started giving up and I purchased these as the closest replacement. Starting on the Pro: side, this shoe's lacing system is great. However, The quality of the shoe dropped dramatically from the past with cheaper materials more glued interfaces than sewn while increasing the price about 50% and being made in low cost of labor Vietnam. The water protection on these has been suspect, but the fatal flaw in the shoe is the design of the heel with an extremely stiff bottom half and a non-stiff upper. REI was great, they swapped out the first pair as I thought I had a defective batch, but the second did the same. So trying to get some use out of these overpriced shoes, I notice now the lower part being separated from the upper making it not easy to slip the shoe on even when pulling the heel loop, I need to shoe horn or drop a finger in the heel to press that part of the shoe back or it wedges under my heel. See photo. Needless to say, Salomon had me as a customer with a great design previously but after this experience never again.

Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex Shoes - Quality No Good
9 March 2024

I've been a Salomon fan for 20 years. It's the only hiking shoe l've worn and always been happy with it, specifically the X Ultra model w/ GoreTex.When the new X Ultra 4 model came out a few years ago, I purchased a pair and was immediately put off by the 1) much shorter tongue which made it extremely hard to tuck the laces strap into and 2) the pain in my toe box that I was getting with every step due to the crease spot of the shoe when I took steps forward. I had too much pain in my foot so I found a pair of X Ultra 3 on Amazon and used that instead. I had too much pain in my foot so I found a pair of X Ultra 3 on Amazon and used that instead. But now I need new shoes...So, fast forward to when I purchased a new pair of these newly updated Salomon X Ultra 4 WIDE at a size 10 for men and after trying them on, my left shoe was painful, AGAIN, due to the crease issue whereas my right foot was perfectly fine. I could clearly see that there was a major difference between the left and right shoe crease points and while the right shoe felt great, I noticed the sewing quality of the left shoe was different and I could see that it stretched the Gore-Tex material more in the toe box area which caused the painful crease in a spot where it shouldn't be creasing. The right shoe was creasing in a normal area which was fine with no issue. So, I decided to buy ANOTHER exact same pair, hoping that the new pair's left shoe would be sewn properly and be a good fit without the painful creasing issue. I just tried the new pair and both left and right shoes fit great with no toe box crease pain. FINALLY. It has taken me years of trying on these new models to finally not have this crease issue.I chalk this up to Salomon cutting corners to save on costs and going with cheaper shoe makers which has resulted in the quality of the shoes going downhill, as I've experienced. I was about ready to jump ship because of this. I'm about to test the new pair on a hike tomorrow. So far with a quick test at home, the crease issue is a non issue with this pair. But I've also heard from others that the tread wears way quicker now with these newer model shoes. If that's the case, I absolutely will be jumping ship and exploring other options after this latest pair. Here's a photo of two pairs of the shoes, showing the left foot shoe. The one on the left has the crease where it destroys my toes where as the new pair in the right are properly sewn which results in a usable shoe.

Solid premium all year hiker
30 March 2024

I came from the Ultra 3 after finding them on my quest for the ultimate hiker all round year shoe. Winter, water, rocks, ice, hot, cold. There has been others but over the years the choices kept getting cut back from other companies. Happy to have found the Ultra. Some reviews has mentioned slight changes to the design from the 3 to 4. I did notice such change. Being a hair more narrow feeling but not enough to stretch into and still a nice feeling fit. Sad the 4 didnt have a leather option like the 3. For stretch or longevity. But shouldnt matter besides preference.Testing the shoe compared to my old one for ice traction on ice under worst conditions, fresh melting ice covered in water, and brand new show maybe with a coating making it smoother for a few walks, ... MoreI came from the Ultra 3 after finding them on my quest for the ultimate hiker all round year shoe. Winter, water, rocks, ice, hot, cold. There has been others but over the years the choices kept getting cut back from other companies. Happy to have found the Ultra. Well within justifiable. And falling isnt a risk. Just a little bit less resistence until the larger "teeth" grip something.Still very happy and close to my 3. And the differences might just fill in over time.

Very Good Shoes

I purchased these direct from Salomon a month ago. I do not normally buy footwear online as correct fitting/comfort is so important in footwear. The ordering process and shipment was phenomenal, and the shoes arrived on time for me to "wear them in" before leaving for my first trek. Worked fine during the 25-miles I put on them before my trek. Unfortunately, during my trek (125-miles) the right shoe mechanism was working loose - not sufficient to be a major problem but was definitely a ... MoreI purchased these direct from Salomon a month ago. Otherwise, the shoes worked great on my trek. Put them through a pretty hard workout and they stood up well. Was particularly impressed with how waterproof they were. Highly recommend these shoes - with the caveat about the lock mechanism
