I have owned these shoes for a few months at this point and, until recently have really liked them. Now. I really love them. What's with my conversation from like to love? It just took one very technical 5 mile hike, complete with miles of wet, muddy, slippery footing including 15+ water crossings with only slick, uncertain wet stone to wet stone footing and slippery/steep accents and descents. The shoes did everything I needed them to do to keep me upright and from getting hurt. My experienced hiking partner was less fortunate and took a frightful tumble. Bottom line: The shoes' traction is spot on, They are very comfortable and have great support over sharp objects and awkward footing. I’ve had perhaps 6 pairs of - ultra 3 - Gtx and non gtx. Perfect fit, really comfortable. Used for heavy duty walking like Cape Wrath Trail. Kept on buying because of fit and grip - even though they weren’t that long lasting - all developed a hole where the fabric meets rubber toe cap at flex point, but usually at same time as sole lost it’s grip due to mileage , so I excused that. So I bought the 4 Mids with high expectation. Felt a little cramped, but new boot, not uncommon. Then on long cross Scotland hike my big toe nail went black and painful, and stayed that way for months. Such was my confidence in previous boots that I bought another pair in hope it was a quirk of that particular pair - but same thing happened - another few months of pain. . Other Salomon models - possibly, but I’m going to look at other brands now. It’s perplexing - last model clearly had a lot of repeat sales so why spoil it?

I've had 3 pairs of Salomon walking walking shoes over the last 10 years. The first pair were awesome and lasted me 6 years (I still actually use them for gardening). The next pair lasted about a year before they developed a split in the upper. They were replaced under warranty but the replacement pair split at the heel and caused blisters after 14 months. The fundamental problem (and this to some extent was true of the second pair) was that the cinch laces are just way too short causing excess pressure on the heel when getting your foot in. I looked on the website and found that this was a common complaint in the reviews. I then bought a really cheap pair to tide me over which actually lasted twice as long as my previous Saloman shoes. As Salomon's response to poor reviews has always been that they take feedback seriously and improve their products accordingly so I thought that given this was a relatively new model they may well have taken the difficult decision to invest the extra 2 cents in longer laces so took the plunge and bought these. How they have actually managed to make them worse is a mystery. The laces are certainly no longer than in the previous version, however, the addition of the pointless soft projection at the back does (as other reviewers have mentioned) make it far more difficult to get your feet in. Needless to say they are going back. Clearly Salomon don't listen to feedback so I doubt that this will have any imact.

I tried on these shoes in a store and they fit like a glove. Like they were made for me with no heel slip at all. I wanted a different color so ordered from Salomon online. Unfortunately the left shoe fits just like the one in the store and the right one slides on my heel as bad as any shoe ever has. Looking more closely at the construction, the left shoe has a nice heel cup that holds nicely and the right shoe has been constructed with a very flat profile that does not 'cup' the heel. Gives me a heel blister on my right foot unless I apply a patch of moleskin prior to wearing. Very disappointing and makes me think the consistency of construction is not there. I recommend not buying this shoes online and only buying from a retail store where you can try them on ... MoreI tried on these shoes in a store and they fit like a glove. I have worn the x-ultras and gx 3s for six years. In 2021 solomon changed the sizing of their shoes, making them run much narrower. I bought a pair online the exact size and model as prior years without trying them on in 2021, and they were way too tight. Dont buy hiking shoes online. Go to REI and try them on first.I tried the ultra 4s on and they seemed to fit funny (narrow and with a weird arch placement) but i thought they would wear in a bit. Buying a wide for the first time in my life, my foot fit in the shoe. I went on a three mile walk in them and quickly noticed two "design flaws". First, the shoe string tightener has changed, and seems to loosen up over time, meaning your shoe wont stay tight the way it should. Buying a wide for the first time in my life, my foot fit in the shoe. I went on a three mile walk in them and quickly noticed two "design flaws". First, the shoe string tightener has changed, and seems to loosen up over time, meaning your shoe wont stay tight the way it should. Second, and much worse for me, the cloth/membrane on the tongue is a little thin and loose, so bunches up if the tongue is loose. The shoe pivots right at the top of the toe box, which is where the cloth bunches up. This gives you a lump of shoe pressing down onto the top of your foot with every step. With some adjustments, this can be fixed for a while, but comes back over time. Having to stop every half mile to fix your shoe is not worth it. With proper fit, maybe this can be resolved, but i could not get it to work. On my way to return them and switch out of solomons for the first time in 7 pairs of shoes.
Salomon has been my "go to" hiking shoe and backpacking boot company for decades, so it is with regret that I am writing a less than positive review about the Ultra 4 GTX. This review is based on about 50 miles of trails in the mountains of Santa Barbara (in an attempt to break them in), followed by another 300 miles on the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago, so it can't be said that I didn't try my best to like them. That said... every foot is different, you may love them, but my review shares some common themes with others.1. Although the quick lacing system is nice for slipping them on/off, you can't do any custom lacing such as having the toe box tighter/looser than the heel/ankle, a real drawback for experienced hikers who use this technique to ... MoreSalomon has been my "go to" hiking shoe and backpacking boot company for decades, so it is with regret that I am writing a less than positive review about the Ultra 4 GTX. That said... every foot is different, you may love them, but my review shares some common themes with others.1. Although the quick lacing system is nice for slipping them on/off, you can't do any custom lacing such as having the toe box tighter/looser than the heel/ankle, a real drawback for experienced hikers who use this technique to accommodate differences in terrain or slope, or foot condition over the course of a long day(s).2. Salomon's "Advanced Chassis" claims to "target articulations on the outer foot for optimum stability...", and that's true, it's a wonderfully stable shoe, but the chassis transfers a disproportional amount of load/pressure to the outside edge of your foot, and at the end of a 20 mile day with a 25 lb. load, I had bruising on the outer part of both feet, something I'd never experienced before with Salomon or any other shoe for that matter.3. The heel/ankle box has what I believe is a wire, running horizontally about an 1.25" above the sole and the padding over that wire at the back of the ankle is thin to begin with and wears out fast, leaving the wire to rub the back of your ankle. Normally this can be at least partially remedied by varying lacing tightness, either snugging up the ankle so it doesn't move as much, or loosening it to provide more room, but you can't do that without adjusting the fit of the entire shoe (see #1 above).4. In the pursuit of lightness (which it is), Salomon appears to have sacrificed padding, everywhere, but most notably in the sole. It's not a huge problem for days under 10 miles, but if you're pushing above 10 you can expect to feel that lack of padding in a profound way.In summary, I've had just about every Salomon predecessor of this shoe and I used to love them, but the following sums up what I believe has happened more and more with each new iteration ... a) lightweight, b) ruggedness, c) comfort... pick any TWO because you can't have all three. The older Salomon low hikers used to be comfortable and rugged, but albeit a little on the heavy side. These Ultra 4's are lighter than their predecessors and are still very rugged, but comfort and adjustability was sacrificed to an unacceptable degree (in my opinion).I still love the Salomon Qwest series backpacking boot because it's not trying to be something else... it's rugged and comfortable, and unapologetic about its weight. The Ultra 4 is in my opinion is a day hiker, or low mileage multi-day shoe.I'm pulling for you Salomon... you can do better.
Got these as they were the lightest on offer in the shop in my size and I had good experiences with Salomon using several pairs in the past. Initially very comfortable with no break in. I did one long hike and a few short ones totally not more than 30-50km then one of the eyelets broke.FIT/COMFORT: runs a nit narrow around the ball of the foot but otherwise comfortable, good shock absorption, I didn't find they pinched as others have mentioned, heel drop is a bit high for my liking.LACING: I really dislike the speed lacing systems (not just bc it broke) they offer no advantage over conventional laces, they need to be constantly tightened, hassle to tuck into the tongue, the little rubber grip that covers where the two ends are joined also came loose make them ... MoreGot these as they were the lightest on offer in the shop in my size and I had good experiences with Salomon using several pairs in the past. It's really lackluster. Fine if on a packed dirt path or in some mud but on mixed terrain and wet rock/stone they are poor, no lateral grip at all. A far cry from Vibram in terms of performance. There is just too much space between treads so there is not enough contact with the terrain.H2O: Gortex works well, have submerged them in streams right up to the brim and still dry.STYLING: a nice looking shoe without the blinding colours competitors haveOverall an OK shoe for easy well maintained trails or urban paths but it's not a hiking shoe, it's a trail runner. The grip/treads are not aggressive enough, and obviously in my case they were not durable at all after little use revealed a defect. That said Salomon customer service was excellent! Very fast no hassle response to my warranty claim, which is commendable! I got credit for another pair and have been waiting for new stock as I don't want to replace with same model. The Elixir look promising (same arrowhead treads though).
I bought the boots for a recent trip to Ireland which would include some hiking. Once the boots were broken, they felt great on my feet.In the wild, the boot really shined. My daughter and I hiked up Mount Brandon on the Dingle Peninsula. If one thing can test gear, a hike on the West Coast of Ireland will do it. The boots held up flawlessly with a variety of surfaces (mud, water, rock, grass). On our hike temps dropped from around 45F to less then 30F with winds exceeding 35 knots steady with rain and ice pellets. The boots (combined with proper hiking socks) kept me feet dry and warm throughout. On another hike to a secluded mountain lake, we had to do some light scrambling. The boots again kept my feet warm, considering how light they are. Felt solid on the pedals of my Fat Bike. Temps on the ride were around 20F. Granted any colder and I would use my insulated boots.Only time will tell if I experience the same quality complaints expressed by others, but after three months and what I considered challenging conditions, these boots are awesome. Bring on the next adventure.
I have worn this shoe 3 times, for approximately 15 hours at this point. I bought the shoe as an outdoor work shoe. The terrain I work in is never flat and requires real grip to push and pull equipment around. Additionally, I'm a big dude, so I also need serious support to endure a day's work. SIZING: The site said the shoe runs small, and to order a larger size -- I've always worn a 13D in every athletic shoe, so I ordered the 14D. It was the right call. Its not perfect, but I cant imagine ordering a size smaller. LACING: The integrated 'pull & cinch' lacing system is awesome and evenly tightens the laces over your foot. SUPPORT: The midsole is very stiff (which I prefer), and prevent ankle roll, which occurs when I wear less supportive shoes. However, I did need to replace the inner liner with a more supportive liner. The original liner is flat and provides no arch support. OVERALL: I think this is the best work shoe I've ever had. More rugged than a running shoe -- More athletic than a work boot. Totally recommend.
I have owned dozens of pairs of the OLDER model of this shoe (X Ultra Gore-Tex). It is the only shoe I have wore for 12 years. The only problems I have had is occasionally one of the eyelets would tear after some use. I have purchased 2 pairs of the new version (X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex). The first pair in size 13 which I always wore in the previous model. The heal was slipping and the fabric wore out and pealed on the inside heal causing blisters after 2 weeks and could not wear them any more. I thought Salomon changed the sizing so I bought a second pair in 12 1/2 hoping this would resolve the issue. Same problem heal slipping causing blisters. Material in heal has not worn or pealed but can’t wear the shoe. 2 basically new pairs of shoes I can’t wear. Salomon should have not made modifications to this shoe. I ended up purchasing the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer Water proof in size 13 which uses Salomon’s membrane version of Gore - Tex. They are basically the same as the older model X Ultra Gore Tex but with a traditional lacing system. Not sure at this point if Salomon’s waterproof membrane will be as good as Gore-Tex. It’s To bad too, as I liked the quick pull lace system. Further, Salomon online sizing recommendations are wrong I measured my foot as they direct said I was a 10 1/2. I’ve always worn a 13 in their shoes. The X Ultra 4 they suggest you order a size up from your regular Salomon fit. I personally would suggest the opposite. I am a letter carrier for the post and do allot of walking in all conditions. Currently I remain loyal to Salomon however I wish they would not continue to make all the small changes to their shoes as in my case they were not improvements. At this point I have not tried to make a warranty claim with Salomon. See photographs attached.
