Best hiking boots I've ever owned/worn.

I was an Sierra Club Outing Leader for years. Been hiking in Ireland and Nepal, but mainly in Southern California. Bought these in a wide fit in January 2022. I've used the Plastazote inner soles for years, since they were recommended to me by a podiatrist. The results of the combination of these boots with these inner soles is like a miracle - really comfortable hiking. So far, after six months of hiking roughly 5-7 miles three times per week, the boots seem to be holding up very well. And they seem to get more comfortable as I continue to wear them. They seem to be durable. If/when they eventually wear out, I won't hesitate to buy another pair of these, or their future models.

If these are anything like the Ultra 3 Mid GTX, I would spend your money elsewhere. After only 3 years of use, the rubber sole is completely separating from the actual fabric/GTX part of the shoe. With how expensive these are, you’d expect them to last SIGNIFICANTLY longer. I had a pair of Vasque hiking boots that literally lasted me 10 years, no breaking or leaking. Smh. I also currently have Oboz and have had those for over 3 years and they’re still performing wonderfully.I contacted about getting the item replaced potentially by Salomon and they said no, because their warranty only extends out 2 years ( they probably know their shoes won’t last much longer than that so it’s really the perfect cut-off window for them lol).Just super disappointed with this ... MoreIf these are anything like the Ultra 3 Mid GTX, I would spend your money elsewhere. My second pair of Salomon
25 March 2023

I purchased these to replace a 2016 pair of Solomon boots that finally wore out. I took these new boots as my only shoes on a trip to Dublin, Wales and Great Britain where we walked around 10+ miles for 12 days, mostly around cities, mostly in the rain. We attempted to hike a mountain in Wales in high winds and wind-driven heavy rain. The boots stayed dry on the outside, but because I didn't have proper rain pants to cover the top of the boot, water filled the boot from the top down. The hotel hair dryer and radiator dried the boots. Otherwise, I was walking through puddles and my feet were dry. The boot is very comfortable with good socks, and I didn't get any blisters. I look forward to taking these on many hikes. I tried the new Salomon hiking shoe (returned) ... MoreI purchased these to replace a 2016 pair of Solomon boots that finally wore out. Pacific NW: Failed
28 December 2022

I am a avid outdoorsman in the Portland, OR area. I spend half a year or more in the back country mountains of the cascades and the coastal mountain range. Living in the Pacific Northwest requires special gear to keep you dry and warm here. With some of the most rain in the nation you have do be prepared. These boots leaked After the 1st use on a 10 plus mile walk in the city. They were not submerged just medium to heavy rainfall. After returning with a wet foot, just one wet foot, I realized they need to be returned. Unacceptable. I decided to give them one more try and went out for a short city hike of Maybe 2 miles and returned again with one wet foot.I own the previous version of this shoe and absolutely loved them until they wore out after a few years. After ... MoreI am a avid outdoorsman in the Portland, OR area. Poor quality control. I decided to try the Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX after reading great reviews.Bottom line is I wouldn't recommend to anyone that is going to be in Wet conditions. If you can find the last version of these shoes I would recommend them, they are light and great traction and they were actually waterproof until they were out.

I purchase the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX, a very nice light weight hiking boot. I have worn Salomons for a long time and I like the build of the shoe and the tacky Contragrip out sole. The toe box is a little more roomy than the X Ultra 3's , but the shoe fits well going by your normal shoe size. ( If you are wearing wool mid weight socks or less. If you are a thick wool sock wearer then you will need to bump up 1/2 size.) Quality control has been suspect lately depending where they are made Vietnam, China, or India. Unfortunately, my right boot toe cap was not aligned like the left boot's toe cap and something was rubbing my toe in the right shoe. I was disappointed and had to return the boots without ever taking the tags off or wearing them outside on the trail. In my opinion, the 4 is really nice in that it is a lighter boot with less padding around the collar and close up properly without gaps on each side of the tongue at the top! I don't need my boots feeling like a box of tissues...

Significantly worse than previous X Ultra models
29 November 2021

I am a regular user of the X Ultra mid boots, having worn out two pairs each of the X Ultra 2 and X Ultra 3. Note that this review applies to the biggest available size (UK 13.5, EUR 49 1/3, USA 14), so it may not be fully applicable to smaller sizes. I have also worn these boots for several months, and they are probably approaching the mid point of their useful life by looking at their soles, so I believe I can provide a good assessment. In my opinion the 4th iteration of the X Ultra is a major step backwards from the excellent previous versions. The changes seem to be related to the significant weight reduction (488 gr per boot versus 590 for the X Ultra 3), which is noticeable. However, the cost of this weight reduction is huge:1. The changes seem to be related to the significant weight reduction (488 gr per boot versus 590 for the X Ultra 3), which is noticeable. However, the cost of this weight reduction is huge:1. There is significantly less cushioning around the ankle, and the boot is also approximately one finger lower. I continue to notice a slight friction around the ankles on every hike, although less as time goes on. In the first few hikes I stopped several times because of this, and once I even had to put some tissue to increase the cushioning. To me this makes no sense, as it a significant inconvenience just to lose a few grams.2. I have to stop and tighten my laces at least twice in every hike, as otherwise the fitting becomes loose. This is new to me and had never happened before. I ignore the reason but maybe the material has some elasticity in it. Huge inconvenience.3. The boot seems to have much less torsion resistance than previous versions. I hike in a very stony area, and at least once every day this causes slight ankle twists when placing the boot heel on a stone. Avoiding this is the reason why I wear mid boots instead of regular shoes, and again seems to be the result of saving a few grams.Overall very disappointed with these boots to the point where I have looked and successfully acquired two more pairs of version 3. I can not recommend version 4 to any one and I will certainly be very cautious when a (hopefully improved) version 5 comes out.Version 3 was an excellent product, this one is not.

I used a pair for the Cambrian Way a year ago and found them great on the varied terrain on grass, mud, tarmac, stones and rocks. I was pleased so bought a fresh pair for the Grande Traversee des Alpes, 700km (GR5, 55, 52). The trail is very varied and very rugged over stones and rocks with rough ascents and descents, so pretty hard on the boots, sometimes coming down over 2000m in a day! They performed brilliantly, soft enough to feel what’s underfoot and mould to the terrain and grip well, without being so soft that the foot felt sore or bruised. The only criticism is that the heels wore almost flat on that walk, so the boots still look in great condition but only good now for flat walks. There are a couple of things that would make this an outstanding boot. First, I am not sure what purpose the weird heel 'lip' cushion is for. It doesn't add any comfort or support. Instead, it just acts like a funnel for dirt. Same with the tongue. Whenever I tighten the laces, the tongue sticks out from my leg. Between the heel lip and the front tongue sticking out, my boots fill up with dirt/pine needles/snow every time I go hiking. PLEASE take off the heel lip and replace the tongue with something thinner so it stays inside the walls of the boot.Secondly, I feel like this boot needs one more set of lace hooks near the ankle. What would be even better is a pair of lace hooks that lock the lace in place at the bottom of the ankle. This small change would allow you to adjust the laces so much more precisely.Other than that, they are comfortable and waterproof. If Salomon made those two fixes, these boots would be 10/10.

Please keep in mind that I have never used the X Ultra 3's, so my review is not biased. I am an avid backpacker and have worn many boots in my life. Also keep in mind that I had two REI employees ensure that I was purchasing the right size. These, by far, are not only the most expensive but also the worst pair of boots that I have ever dawned upon my feet.My Adidas Terrex Swift R2's that I loved finally died out on me and I decided to splurge on a new set of boots from a "quality" brand. Salomon's Ultra 3's have great reviews, so I figured the new 4's would be even better. This was not the case. It seems Salomon missed the mark on the skew between trail runner and hiking boot with these, making them not only useless, but actively harmful to users. I took these on a 30 mile backpacking trip on Isle Royal and now have medical bills to pay directly because of these boots because they caused intense blistering, bruising of my feet, my toe nails are turning purple and will likely fall off, and of course I slipped multiple times on easy terrain due to lack of grip. Here is a quick summary:Comfort:This is subjective to my feet, but these were a terrible fit. I do not have wide feet, but these run so narrow that they crushed my feet and damaged my nail beds on my long hike. Also manufacturing quality is low as the right show had a completely different shape, ridges, and size than the left shoe causing uneven wear. The bottoms are paper thin, expect to feel every pebble under your foot.Support:There is none. The point of a mid cut is to offer stability. These boots have a convenient cutout specifically around where your ankles end up when you are hiking downhill and need stability the most. The bottom of the shoe is very flexible and unstable. Also the upper of the shoe is very flexible. This results in your foot warping the upper when planted on any incline, and sliding off the sole of the shoe regardless of how tight you tie them.Grip:I have slipped total of four times in my hiking career. Three of those times were during the 30 miles I hiked with these boots on. The will slip on dry rock, wet rock, roots, dirt, and even mud. The last eight miles of my hike I completed in my crocs because I could no longer handle the damage the boots were causing to my feet and the crocs had measurably better grip and stability.Durability:Waterproofing failed after about ten miles. At the end of the 30 miles, noticeable snags int the stitching appeared. The lugs also seemed slightly worn which is surprising since they didn't grip anything to begin with. Conclusion:I have no idea how it is possible to create a shoe that is tight enough in the forefoot to crush your toes but loose enough in the heel to shred your heels. This shoe offers the lack of support and protection of a boot while also lacking the flexibility, comfort, and freedom of a trail runner. Truly the worst of both worlds. Again, I cannot imagine a foot type or activity scenario that these would be ideal for. I'm deeply disappointed that Salomon has opted for perceived style rather than function and that their manufacturing quality has dropped so intensely. I use their products for my cross country skiing antics but will likely be swapping to a quality brand after this experience.
