I've been wearing this line of shoes for over 10 years and have always loved them. This version continues the trend of being very comfortable and confidence inspiring on trails but introduces a big problem. They just don't hold up. These shoes break down far faster than previous versions and they lose their water resistance. Things are pretty wet here in Oregon so that means my socks end up pretty wet, too. Not really acceptable for a shoe at this price point.Salomon does deserve praise for their warranty, they sent me a replacement pair with no hassle. Unfortunately less than a year in those have lost their water resistance, too. When they revise the design I'll keep an eye on reviews but for now I'm looking elsewhere.

Have had these hiking shoes for six months, very satisfied with them for day hiking and daily wear. Excellent for groomed trails and quite good for somewhat rougher terrain as well. Wore them once on a five-hour hike over very rocky trails; managed fine, but that was probably pushing the limit. They are extremely comfortable and secure on the foot. Am not a big fan of the one-pull lacing system mostly because it's not so easy to tuck the pull-lace into the otherwise convenient tongue pocket designed for that purpose; and I do wonder what I'll do when/if a lace breaks. I have used Salomon products for years and find them to be of good build quality and performance. I have a very similar Salomon shoe to this one and I have loved them. I have a wide forefoot and the previous shoe had a nice wide toe box. This shoe ordered in wide is lasted very differently. Not the wide toe box of my previous shoe. These new shoes do fit but not with the same excellent fit as the previous shoes (XA Pro 3D). I was previously very happy with the X Ultra 3 Wide shoes - they were durable, comfortable and incredibly well made. They were compacted in one lump, much not to say the first time I wore them (after a fitting) and immediately went on a 2-week trek in the Himalayas. Therefore, disregarding the negative reviews, I took the risk of buying the new model Xultra 4 Wide. And believe it, if I had set out in them in the hilamayas straight from the march the expedition would have been lost. During the fitting the shoes were OK, but after the first march they started to squeeze me in the upper part of the foot, then in the lateral part, then one of the shoes became loose, and finally after 3 months they settled on the foot, and now they rub only the ankle. The surface of the Goretex looks as if it is too large, which makes it fold over at the bends at the crotch, causing the goretex to crack. Maybe it's for the better, they will deteriorate faster I will stop using them sooner. Nevertheless, the feeling for the foot is not the worst - the worst is the noise they make with every step, because they creak. The sole and the lining make it seem as if they are not well-fitted together, hence the sound. Other than that, they protect well against moisture and when pressed firmly enough they hold the foot, although they are very uncomfortable and it's a shame to walk in them because of the sound they make. However, they were very expensive, so unfortunately I have to wear them now until they break down, which will probably happen soon.

Within the first half mile I felt a rubbing spot on the inside of my instep just behind the big joint of my big toe. I dialed my walk back to just two miles and checked my feet and the shoes. Sure enough redness of a likely blister on my foot if I continued any further. Inside the boot one of the stiffening straps sewn or bonded to upper of the shoe creates a small bump or bulge when the shoe flex - enough to make this shoe unworkable for me. I returned the shoes and ordered an 11.5 Wide and selected the more expensive 2-day shipping because we had a trip planned to CO 4-days from placing the new order. I received the new 11.5 Wide in time for the trip, however, now that the width was good, the length was about a half size too big. We spent about 6-7 hours hiking each day and my feet felt great, weren't sore or fatigued. The shoes provided outstanding grip on dirt, dry rocks, and in some wet areas but did not perform that well when we encountered quite a bit of snow at higher elevations. The waterproof feature was true to it's claim as we spent a good bit of time drudging through deep snow and crossing a few creeks. My feet stayed dry the entire time. Even with thick wool socks, the 11.5 Wide were too big (long) and the laces needed to be cinched as tight as possible (which then left excess laces that needed to be tucked and wrapped around itself.Regarding the laces, they are very thin and use a one-pull system versus tying traditional laces. Some may prefer this type of lace system, however, I found that it kept loosening throughout the hike and each time I cinched it back tight it seemed as if the laces grew in length. I also felt if I pulled too tight that either the lace would snap or the cinch mechanism would break.Thankfully, Backcountry has a great return policy, and I was able to return the shoes for store credit. Save for the sizing and laces issues, these shoes were very comfortable and performed well in the conditions for which I used them. Because of their comfort and performance I have ordered another pair, this time in the mid version and have selected 11 Wide, so we'll see how those fit.
