When using the device to USB, you can use a set of headphones to monitor the audio at the same time and may have had an effect on the shortened range when I was using the Android phone.Overall, this can be discrete looking and good for normal movement and recording at about 20-30 feet. If you want further you must pay attention to the clear line of sight and stable receiver.

Even at max gain and volume on Windows, it does not output a very strong signal. I got this to be a part of an easy-to-set-up kit to allow decent-quality Zoom-style interviews regardless of the circumstance. Combined with an Insta360, it makes for a pretty solid home production duo. That setup only requires the end user to plug in 2 USB devices for clean audio and crisp 4k. It's about all you can ask for if the person you need to have using it can only figure out about that much! Anyhow, the device isn't terrible, it's just not as exciting as the Insta360 I got to go with it. Sort of a buzzkill almost, but it gets the job done. There are probably cheaper and better ways to do this, but for what I needed it did well.

When I saw this Samson XPD2 Lavalier microphone I realized that this would be the mic to get.This mic pack runs on 2 AA batteries has a very secure metal belt clip, a small antenna and most importantly a removable microphone. There are many times people in the past using my old microphone accidentally caught the wire on something and broke the cable which was costly to repair. I'm sure if this one breaks I'll be able to buy a new replacement mic and just plug it in. Samson was kind enough to even include a tiny screwdriver inside the battery compartment to adjust the gain if needed.Since this mic uses a 2.4GHz digital wireless system, the audio will be a lot cleaner than my old analog mic was. I was testing it around my house and found I could walk about 30 feet from the receiver and still get a clear recording. I did notice when I walked past my stainless steel refrigerator, the audio got choppy so clean line-of-site is the best way to get good audio.The receiver unit doesn't require a battery as it plugs into an iPhone (or Android), an iPad or a computer and using audio recording software it will work fine. The receiver will plug directly into the USB jack on a computer and does not require any extra drivers. If you need to use it on some kind of equipment that doesn't have USB, there is a standard 1/8" jack on the bottom of the receiver that can be plugged into the device with a standard 1/8" patch cable. Please be aware if you plan to use it with a phone or tablet you will need an adapter. I had a USB-A to USB-C adapter so I was able to try it on my iPad immediately but I had to order a USB-A to Lightning adapter so I could plug it into my iPhone. I can now shoot video with the receiver attached and get excellent audio to go with the 4K video. Audio is the most important part of a video because if the audio is bad, nobody is going to watch it.Connecting the microphone was very simple, I just plugged the receiver into the iPhone using the adapter, turned on the transmitter and pressed the pairing button on the receiver, and then went to the Bluetooth settings on the iPhone and selected it and when it connected, I was able to use all kinds of apps such as the standard camera app, Voice Memos, Quick Voice, RecorderHQ, MicSwap and I want to create a quick podcast I can even use Anchor. There are many other great audio and video apps available on the Appstore and this Samson Lavalier will work with any of them.All in all, this is a great microphone to carry with me on a shoot.

It was detected quickly, and when the PXD1 (transmitter) was powered on, it paired quickly. The microphone plugs into the PXD1 using a miniXLR (3 PIN) plug on the top near the antenna, and the PXD1 includes an attached metal belt clip. The Cable is more than log enough to run inside you clothing, and since the microphone is simply held in place using the wire, the microphone can move freely into place. You will need to source AA batteries for the PXD1, as this doesn't include them.When I read this would with an iPhone, I dug out my USB Camera Adapter (an aftermarket one) and was disappointed to see it would not pair properly, as it would simply blink on the status light. However, once I used the Apple branded dongle, the microphone paired quickly and was able to record audio using the Voice Memo app with ease. The light would just come on the second I hit record on the Voice Memo app. You results will vary depending on the USB adapter you are using, but I’d recommend just sticking with the Apple branded one for guaranteed functionality. I don’t think this is a fault of the USB controller, but more so a cheap dongle not working with everything.So far, I’ve recorded audio for my own content, and even assisted a friend with a recent video he just posted to YouTube using the mic with the wire conveniently tucked away in his shirt. I did have to adjust the gain, by starting at the highest setting and working my way down, until it was capturing only the audio I needed without all the background noise.When using with Windows/Mac, I utilized the Audacity app, which is an opensource (free) app used by a lot of content creators to capture audio. It’s easy to use, and didn’t have any issue utilizing the USB controller to capture audio. You even have a line out port (headphone jack) on the USB controller for monitoring the capture or for running to an external amplifier or capture card if you’d like. So long as the device is getting 5V power from a USB connection, it will receive and output using the line out connection to an external device.It worked well in every environment, and the range seemed to work up to 80 feet flawlessly during my use. It does state that it has a line of sight range of up to 100 feet, but never had to go that far, but don’t doubt that it will; as long as there isn’t anything to interfere with the wireless connection. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the XPD2, and would highly recommend this for any content creators out there that need a mic for on-site audio without the cable mess. This worked with Windows, Mac, and my iPhone (with the Apple branded Camera dongle) without issue.

I need to find the best setting, but you will likely need to adjust the gain which can be done by turning a knob behind the door of the battery pick. Of course, increasing gain increases the likelihood of distortion and background noise, but I found a happy medium without much difficulty.Again, this seems like it will be a great lav for the price, especially for filmmaking, but I can also see it being a terrific option for podcasters or ever video calls. I may give it a shot on Zoom some time using my audio interface. The mic is small enough that it is easy to mask on a dark shirt, or just crop out of the frame. Cool product!

If you want to take your presentation to the next level in a larger setting where you need to amplify your voice, this is it.Works best with line of sight, but it says it works up to 98 feet away. Just to try it, I used it through a wall with limited success. So line of sight is the best way in my experience. I have not tested it nearly close to the maximum distance, as the computer set up I use is typically closer to me than the audience.The transmitter part connects easily to your belt. If you want to take your presentation to the next level in a larger setting where you need to amplify your voice, this is it.Works best with line of sight, but it says it works up to 98 feet away. Just to try it, I used it through a wall with limited success. So line of sight is the best way in my experience. I have not tested it nearly close to the maximum distance, as the computer set up I use is typically closer to me than the audience.The transmitter part connects easily to your belt. It doesn’t restrict movement in anyway, and it is about the size of a small pager (am I dating myself?). Since I usually wear a suit jacket, this the mic up to my tie and boom. Ready for action.The receiver you just plug into the side of your computer. I use a Mac, but you can also use it just as easily with a PC, as it is dual compatible.So this thing is made for presentations. So if you think you are going to use it to play super spy and record peoples conversations, you are mistaken. First of all that is illegal in many states (two party consent is needed). And second, this is not what it is made for and it won’t work for that. I am only saying this, because my friend looked at it and asked if it could be used for that purpose. After making fun of him, he eventually understood.This is a tool for presentations. Much like the clicker you hold in your hand, this just takes things to a more professional level and to me is meant to be used with a larger audience. The price is very reasonable for what you are getting and the quality of the device is top notch.For anyone looking to conduct speeches to larger groups where you need to project your voice, this is the tool for you. Beyond 20 feet (between mic and the USB receiver) or any with obstructions (example 5 feet away separated by a drywall wall), then you might want to look at a different wireless solution. In most speaking / presentation situations, this is fine. The presenter is in the front of the room with the PA / Soundsystem / Mixer, which then projects sound into the room. So most people would rarely need more than 20 feet of distance between them and the PA system. You would not want to “risk” walking into the middle of a room away from the USB receiver, in my opinion.FAVORITE FEATURES- Seems well made physically- Standard (Typical Lavalier Lecture Mic) form factor (lapel clip , belt for transmitter, and so on)- Good Support (Quick Response)- Easy to use / setup- USB Extension CableOVERALL RECOMMENDATIONI can only recommend this for close distance work, where hands free is still required. I even had a replacement unit sent from tech support and it had the exact same problem. (This was on 3 different PC’s). The manual says it can be attached to any USB power source and used without a PC. I attached it to 1 AMP USB plug (from a ROKU) to power the usb device for pairing and pass through of analog output. I then plugged LINE-OUT from the USB dongle to LINE-IN on my PC and bingo, I finally had full signal strength on audio input. In the end this is not that big of deal as the end result was the same. It allowed me to use the SAMSON – XPD2 USB WIRELESS hands free as I needed to do. Still, it did not work as advertised for me. In all likelihood it is an incompatibility with a default windows driver for audio devices or a USB driver or something else. Even so, there are no special drivers indicated as needed in the manual or the company website (that I could find), so that implies to me, that it should be fully compatible with modern windows. Instead of support asking me to install a driver or upgrade firmware, they sent a new unit. So, if it was as simple as a driver, I assume they would had said something. Again, support was prompt and offered to RMA the original unit quickly.
