An Improvement over the 4TB 850 EVOs

I bought six of these to replace the four 850 EVOs (one of the other two new 860s is for an additional data drive and the other one is a spare) that were in the desktop machine that recently died (the new machine is still under construction). So far, all I've done is to copy over the data on the original 850 EVO data drives to the new ones (I'm going to use the old data drives for backups for the new data drive). The data transfer went as well as expected (and I have high expectations) but one thing I noticed was the new Pros ran a lot cooler than the older EVOs. I don't know if that is due to going from an EVO to a Pro, from an 850 to an 860, or both. Others I've discussed this with point out the 860s use a newer controller and internal DRAM. Once I get the new rig up and going, I'll report back if any problems develop, which I'm not expecting since I've had excellent results with Samsung SSDs all the way back to the 840 Pros. Of the 38 or so Sammy's I've bought over the years, I still have all but two of them. My first SSD, a 128GB 840 Pro, ran 24/7 and died just before its five year warranty ran out (I didn't bother with filing a warranty claim since I no longer had any use for a drive that small). The second one was a 4TB 850 EVO that arrived DOA (Newegg quickly replaced it with a new one; good customer service over all is why Newegg is my first choice for computer parts). All the others are still in service except for six 500GB 850 EVOs I retired because I outgrew them and these six new Pros awaiting the completion of my new machine (the 500GB SSDs are still good with plenty of write life left so I keep hoping I'll find a use for them; convert them into super sized USB thumb drives?).

Drive is reliable and fast, but I'm having issues with dual boot

Got this as a replacement for a 5 yr old Mushkin SSD, which for some reason just got corrupted one day; showed only a single partition of size 32K. So far, this Samsung SSD is working great. I've had more trouble getting this configured for dual boot in an UEFI secure boot PC with LInux alongside Windows 10. I'm on my 4th and hopefully final attempt, disconnecting the original hard drive after migrating using Paragon. When I did this with the old Mushkin, everything just worked. For some reason this time, switching back and forth between Windows and Linux sometimes booted up Windows from the hard drive, and then wouldn't boot at all since the EFI entries got messed up. Windows apparently reinserts itself into EFI every time it boots.

Good drive but if you need specific features, check the details.
20 August 2019

Looks like the drive must be mounted internally (i.e, direct SATA) to be compatible with version 5.1.1 of SAMSUNG Magician (the latest version). Not a surprise but I didn't see it in the documentation. The software is required to enable the security features and firmware upgrades. The security on windows systems is done through bitlocker. If you want to use the integrated security, you need to check the details. I registered the drive and the warranty based on S/N is good through 2022. If you expect to use the 5 year warranty, you'll need to save the invoice. 1 egg off for lack of support on SAMSUNG website and incomplete documentation.

Great SSD from a reliable company.

After researching ssds, opted for this one which I have been looking at for a long time. I just needed a larger boot drive (old sad 256 gb). It works flawlessly, and as for speed, no difference since the previous was a sad. Samsung made it simple to use due to the software on their website. I was able to clone the new add from the old drive. No need to close programs or disable them prior cloning. All info on old drive was transferred to the new drive. Furthermore, Samsung provides other software for their drives, Samsung Magician. A lot of space and a great warranty, 5 years.

Perfect drive

This is my second Samsung drive, my other is the 850. I got this one to update to Windows 10, I ran Windows 7 as long as I could, but it was starting to become a problem with no updates. Used the Samsung cloning software to clone the drives and then Updated it to Windows 10 keeping the original drive with Windows 7 as a back up. (Windows 10 Pro update was still free, if you have the original Windows 7 key). The drives are very stable with no issues. I ran the original 850 for about 5 years and it was still going strong. The cloning software is stupid easy to use. Cloned Windows 7 and updated to Windows 10 in less then an hour. This helps if the main drive is just the operating system with very little other stuff on the drive. Samsung SSD's are great
6 March 2018

I've been using Samsung SSD's for a few years in various computers that I maintain. My wife has a nice HP i7 laptop that came with two 500gb hard drives from the factory. Since she saves every picture she sees, the drives were getting full and thus slowing down. Boot times in the 3 minute range were becoming commonplace. To remedy these problems I replaced her old drives with two Samsung 1tb 860 pro SSD's. It did take all day to transfer the data (I did mention that they were mostly full) but the switch was easy, painless, and did not result in any lost hair on my part, and now her laptop boots in less than 40 seconds. Plus she has double the space to save pictures from her friends latest lunch that was posted on FaceBook. A great product but kinda pricey.

On my older machine Dell Workstation twin Xenon T3500 (SATA II) I have to use Rapid mode with Samsung Magician, otherwise the speed is seriously effected, down to 1,000 Mb/s. (Rapid mode creates certain worry should the power go out, as there is a greater chance to corrupt data) Still get over 3Mb/s read and write. Too lazy to build my own uninterrupted power supply, and do not trust the store bought cheap units. Also, using 10% Over Provisioning, but with 1 Tb drive that is not an issue. Running well for last 1/2 year. Purchased the second one couple of week ago and plugged it in just to make sure it work. Using it as a storage drive for now. No issues. Should they fail in the future, I can blame Samsung and not myself for being cheap. Having said all that, I have purchased about 15 different SSD's in last 2 years. Crucial, Mushkin, WD, PNY, Hynix and Kinston and had no issues with any of them. Sure some differences in write and read speed, but not noticeable in actual work. All of them speed up and gave a new life to PC with disc drives.

Solid Reliable SSD
25 November 2020

Recommend overall and this particular model for its durability specifications. For the last 4 years I was using HD (mechanical) due to possible reliability issues with page file which Windows insanely writes over and over again. Unfortunately, this boot drive was making loading Windows 7 a very long process. For the last 8 years I was checking different SSDs reliability and Samsung came out OK with this model. Decided to change, to improve system loading time, which of course it did. Finally upgraded to Win10 and this all worked out well.

Summary of hard drive performance
20 May 2019

I bought this solid state drive because it had Samsung's new V-NAND technology and I wanted a drive with 2 bit Multi Level Cells. The specifications say that the drive has 2 bit MLC for the vertical NAND cells and I was interested in this technology. The ssd seems to work ok most of the time and it is fairly fast. Samsung provides Magician software which allows viewing drive health, erasing the ssd, or updating its firmware. Cons: I expected the drive to perform a little faster. So I wasn't all that impressed with the performance. When I use RAPID mode in the settings for the drive in Magician software, the drive actually performs slightly slower. My biggest issue with the drive right now is that I am getting a blue screen in Windows 10. The blue screens I am getting have the error codes: KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR, and also SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION. Blue screens were never happening with the old mechanical hard drive. I ran the chkdsk utility several times with the arguments /X /R several times to detect and fix any data issues on the drive. I also ran the system file checker (sfc /scannow) and they all indicated that the operating system's files are fine. I spent a lot of money on that ssd because it was advertised as having 2 bit MLC which is faster and better than 3 bit TLC. I wasn't expecting having blue screens at all. I installed and used another Kingston SSD several years ago with an older laptop and it still performs fine.
