970 EVO Plus vs 980

I have a Samsung 1tb 970 EVO Plus as a boot drive, OS and general purpose applications. I also have a Samsung 500gb 980 nvme as a games drive, but was quickly running out of diskspace. I decided to buy another Samsung 1tb 970 EVO Plus. It was an easy swap on the motherboard, but the performance is definitely a step up from the 980. All my games load just that much quicker than it did before. I know the specs are almost identical, but the 970 EVO Plus is definitely faster. I think pricewise, I paid the same for the older, better performing and larger capacity Samsung 970 EVO Plus as I did for the lower capacity and less performing Samsung 980 (which my wife got as an upgrade from a mechanical drive :-) ) Win, win. Highly recommended.

I now have multiple Samsung products: phone, laptop, internal and externa SSDs. The hardware has been consistently excellent...zero complaints. So far, the 970 Evo SSD recently purchased is purring along as I have come to expect. NO disappointments here! I purchased a Galaxy Book Pro 2 with only a 256GB SSD with the intentions of replacing it with a 1TB drive. I got the best of both worlds when to my pleasant surprise, B&H gave me a gift certificate for $100 with the purchase of the laptop. I then applied that to the cost of the 1TB 970 Evo....coming out way ahead and have a much faster SSD that would have come installed in the laptop. I most certainly would highly recommend this product!

I also have 2 secondary drives that use Samsung 860 QVO which have good speeds for data storage and read.Only thing I missed out on when getting the drive is that I didnt consider the size of games, so since I have only 250GB drive, restricted, but planning on upgrading the motherboard to be able to get two NVMe ports to allow plugging in another 970 EVO PlusThe harddrive helps with quick and fast boot of the desktop, with under 2 seconds to boot and had no issues playing AAA games on high settings(Config is i7-8700K and 16GB 3000MHZ RAM and 2070 RTX)Pros: Fast Read speeds and Write speedsCons: Could have some better heat sink to prevent it getting a bit hot, but going to get a new MOBO with heatsink to prevent this

I have a Samsung 1tb 970 EVO Plus as a boot drive, OS and general purpose applications. I also have a Samsung 500gb 980 nvme as a games drive, but was quickly running out of diskspace. I purchased this 1TB NVMe M.2 internal SSD to replace my 500GB 960EVO, which was my C: drive and was getting full. Installation is a snap, just plug it into the motherboard's M.2 socket (I have 2, so I installed it into the second socket) and screw it down. I booted to Windows 10 and ran Acronis TrueImage 2020 and used the Clone Disk tool. I selected the Manual Mode for the clone operation, selected my original 960EVO SSD (the current C: drive) as the source and the new 970EVO SSD as the destination. Manual Mode with its default options resizes the data partition to fill all available space on the destination drive, which was exactly what I wanted, so I let TrueImage do its thing. The computer rebooted, did the clone operation, and restarted... Ok, so this SSD is a breeze to install to your M.2 port, although there is some information that you wont' happen across easily and can help to know during install. 1 - Double check that your Samsung Magician software is the 'latest' version. Magician will always say it is the latest, but this is not always true. My Magician was 5.0 and said it was the latest version. But, it would not recognize my new NVMe drive until I downloaded Magician 5.2 from the Samsung website. 2 - There is a separate driver you will want to get for this drive from the Samsung website. Normally you would assume that having Magician would be enough, but the driver is separate. 3 - Ensure that when you look at your drive description in Magician, it says 3 x 4 and not 3 x 2 in the description ... MoreOk, so this SSD is a breeze to install to your M.2 port, although there is some information that you wont' happen across easily and can help to know during install. 1 - Double check that your Samsung Magician software is the 'latest' version. Very easy, but running at x2 instead of x4 will cut your drive speed in half, so you want to ensure you are at x4. 4 - Last item ... if your drive is installed and everything should be aok, but Magician tells you that your drive is not recognized, you'll need to initiate it in disk management. This did not happen to me with the 970, although I cloned to it this time which initialized it automatically. But when I installed my other 860 a few months ago, it would not recognize it until I did this and it took some poking around to figure it out. Hope this helps anyone that needs it. Half the Speed on Battery, Samsung NVMe driver problems

I tested on crystal mark. Read/Write speeds would go from 3500 to 1800 or half when going from Plugged in to Battery. I have cheap WD Blue drives that performed better on battery. This isn't caused by it going from 4 to 2 lanes either.The worse problem is the Samsung NVMe drivers on their website cause a critical error (41) in the Event Viewer on Windows 11. Basically the computer would wake up after being shut down and then drain the battery. It took close to a week to troubleshoot. I ended up reinstalling windows 11 and one by one install all my programs. Found the NVMe driver was the cause. After i rolled back to the default MS driver, no issues. I thought Samsung would be the way to go given all the good reviews, but i personally i think they're garbage. This ... MoreI tested on crystal mark. It's my DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D DOS game toy box.Now, about the board. I like to push it. I want the newest hardware and the oldest software. This board has the chipset and SATA ports I demand, and drivers for Windows 7 where available. I only buy AMD as I will never forgive intel for putting so many competitors out of business, ex. Cyrix to which I was a fan.The Samsung migration software will not work to image the NVMe to a hard drive, only from a hard drive to the NVMe. SO...I used Macrium Reflect to image the 960 500GB NVMe to a WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD. I removed the 960 EVO 500GB NVMe from the MoBo and inserted the 970 EVO 1TB.Booting off of the WG 500G SSD, I used the Samsung migration software to image to the 970 EVO. This worked fine. Now, while I am at this point, I installed a fresh win7 to an SSD. The 960 EVO is now in the ORICO Aluminum M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure. I moved all the files from the 960 NVMe to the 970 NVME in the third partition, then put the 960 back into the MoBo and imaged the clean install of Win7 to prove it works, then imaged it back to the original install, and it works.End result: 970 EVO success in migrating my original install of Win7. A clean back up install and original installs mirrored on Seagate SATA drives for quick recovery stored in a safe place. Seamless Upgrade for HP laptop

Replaced the original mechanical 1TB hard drive in our HP Pavilion laptop using the Samsung Migration software. Made an image copy of the old drive, removed the old drive and rebooted into all the content that was there before! Superfast boot, applications open in an instant. The old computer had a slot for the optane cache memory and this fit in the M2 slot with no problems. Like a new laptop for $100 bucks!

EDIT I had to figure out the differences in all this new hardware from SSD SATA to SSD NVMe. Cell Types. TLC (Triple Level Cell) Less Durable Slower, fits 3 bits per cell cheaper. MLC (Multi Level Cell) Best Durability / Speed Ratio for the price fits 2 bits per cell SLC (Single Level Cell) Best Durability / fastest Speed OVERLY PRICED fits 1 bit per cell Of course with the more bits on a cell the more capacity there is right but then the more read and writes causing quicker MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) So I'm like ok great I know my cell types now what in the world is Samsungs V-NAND compared to this 3D-NAND You'll be happy to know it's the same technological standard Samsung just calls it V-NAND So 2D planar layer cells: to be fit onto the die and that's it ... MoreEDIT I had to figure out the differences in all this new hardware from SSD SATA to SSD NVMe. Because of this technology Now we can stack a bunch of MLC Types on top of each other giving us capacity and theorectically more endurance (life span) I'd imagine. (Samsung Software allows you to provision a section of the partition 10% to be stored for extra use as the SSD Controller sees fit. This will increase the life of the drive quite a bit. ) Now for SATA vs. NVMe SATA Max Speed is 6G(b)its / ps. This was great for old rotary HDD's. Then SSD's came into play. The SSD's utilized the 600M(B)ytes / ps or so speed of SATA. This is a bottle neck because the SSD is much faster then the SATA interface allows it to perform at. So came the NVMe (Non Volatile Memory)express I believe. This replaces SATA as the SSD replaces the HDD NVMe also consumes the PCIe Lanes on the main boards' system as the bus to the CPU NVMe 1.3 whats that compared to 1.4 Thats the NVMe Revision Standard. Just like PCIe Gen 1 or Gen 2 Gen 3 or 4 It's the version So what about 64L V-NAND of 64L 3D-NAND Remember V-nand is Samsungs term the rest of the world calls it 3D-nand The 64L or 64 Layers is how high the Cells are stacked this is the 3D or V part of it 64 Layers of Cells stacked 3 dimensionally comapred to the regular NAND which were 1 layer only. So now we have more choices 64 Layers of TLC 64 Layers of MLC 64 Layers of SLC Does your brain hurt yet? Happy hunting theres more to be learned but that is a good start.

Upgraded Latitude 7490 from sata m.2 to NVME m.2

The Sata m.2 in the Latitude 7490 had fast disk read of 454 but I knew the NVME would be lightning speed compared to it. I bought the Gen 3 Samsung because of the price and also knowing the Latitude would only use 2 lanes. (per the internet ). I also decided to do a clean install of Windows 11 Pro. I removed the Sata m.2, put in the Samsung m.2 booted up with the Windows 11 Pro install dvd and Windows saw the Samsung immediately. After the install, I tested the drive with Crystal Disk Mark and it was 33250, I later installed the Samsung driver for the disk, downloaded from the Samsung site and it was 3499. The Drive states speeds of 3500.
