I've been using the Samsung 990 PRO for my PlayStation 5 for the past 2 weeks and it's been very good.InstallationInstallation was super easy. The 990 PRO comes with a heatsink already installed (!!). I just opened up the PS5 by sliding the backplate back, used a screwdriver to open up the panel that holds the SDD and popped the 990 PRO in. It was as simple as that and took a total of 2 minutes.FormattingJust boot up the PS5 and was prompted to format the SSD. This process took 30 seconds.PerformanceThis thing is blazing fast, with 700mb/s read and write speeds, all my files transferred over quickly. I was able to run all my PS4 games without any issues or lag. Note that PS5 games cannot be run from the SSD due to PS5's restriction.OverallI'm super happy ... I had high expectations going into this review, as I had already used and still do the 980 Pro version of the Samsung Pro line. The heatsink on this drive makes for a nice visual statement and not only does it looks great, it also keeps the drive cooler than with out the heatsink. I was able to install and test all of my games on my PC and had zero issues. Performance with load times is insanely quick, my previous games would take a few seconds to load nothing to complain about, but it was a night and day difference with the 990 Pro, and some games were near instant load. Which makes for a better gaming experience when trying to switch and play another AAA title that takes up massive amounts of storage on your drive. Heatsink keeps the SSD from overheating similar to how a radiator keeps a car engine from overheating. I haven't used it enough to definitively know if heatsink works but I would assume that it does.I ran some read/write tests and though it did not hit the 7,000 MBs/s, the read was 1,818 MBs/s and the write was 2,248 MBs/s. There are probably other factors that come into play. It is definitely faster than my Kingston SSD which managed 1,267 MBs/s read & 544 MBs/s write. From unpackaging to installing the device took less than five minutes. It was a pain-free experience. As quickly as I was able to install the device, the PS5 immediately recognized it and quickly formatted the device.I was AMAZED with how fast I could move my installed games to the SSD. It was a matter of mere seconds to transfer 30GB of data. And, now I have significantly more space on my PS5 and don't need to uninstall games everytime I get a new one! (At least for a while.)Where I was really pleasantly surprised was in the performance boost I observed on loading times. With Horizon: Forbidden West, starting up the game is near instantaneous. The game was already pretty quick on the PS5 to load, but now it is essentially running like an old school cartridge based console that didn't have any load times. I'm truly impressed with the performance improvements this device provides.I will have to wait and see how long it will take to fill up the 1TB device. Perhaps by then it'll be time to upgrade capacity. Until then (which I expect to be a while) I'm really happy witht the bump in storage capacity and performance that this powerful little device provides.
The Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink is a work of art. The heatsink has the lines of a Lamborghini and the actual drive has the performance to match. Integrate the 990 Pro with the Samsung Magician software and you have a complete solution. I was hesitant to buy at first with the initial reports of quick degradation of life expectancy. Samsung responded quickly, finding the cause was the firmware. My drive came with the latest firmware and so far so good. I had hoped it would fit in my new top end 2023 laptop. However the heatsink is substantial and it would not physically fit. Note; very few laptops can accommodate a SSD NVMe with heatsink, just too much real estate. I put the drive in one of my desktops, running an I7 with 64 Gb of memory. The drive is a performer!
I originally had the 990 Pro without the heatsink and required a third party one and it has worked great on my PC but I prefer when SSD's can be purchased with one because they tend to work a lot better.The heatsink has a nice visual style with an RGB light. It's Thermal Guard design has excellent thermal management. It's optimized for graphically demanding games and the newer controller gives us the highest speed available, faster loading times, great reliability and good power efficiency. Testing the Read\Write speeds do come to the noted 7450\6900 mb/s, respectively.And it is a huge difference from the 980 Pro which is still a great SSD and I still own some and continue to buy them for any less demanding devices.
