A good phone, crappy everything else

A decent phone until it isn't. Beware phone is incredibly fragile, and if anything goes wrong service basically isn't an option if it has ever left the box it was shipped in. The phone took a drop of about 3 feet while in a protective case, and from that point onward began rebooting at random, at first every few hours, up till the point it would be lucky to last 2 minutes after boot, eventually completely dying. I contacted support about a repair and was informed that as my phone had some other superficial damage, scratches in the screen from keys, as well as some scuffs on the side/back from a drop over 11months before these problems began, that not only would the motherboard replacement be not covered by the warrant, they also had to do the screen sides and back ... MoreA decent phone until it isn't. Which is frankly ridiculous, if I took my car to the mechanic for engine trouble and they insisted on repainting it they'd never get away with it, but hey i guess they've got you buy the nuts as the option for sourcing a motherboard is about 150 from some unknown shipper in india.Looked at replacing it with the a54, cant trade in as a broken phone as broken phones must power on and hold charge??? Thats a damaged phone, not broken. This is despite their own T&C's stating that the a53 can be traded in even if not meeting the trade in standards, when trying to get clarification from the support reps on whether this was accurate, received nothing but copy and paste responses.Overall a great phone if wrapped in bubble wrap, terrible everything else. only leaving 2 stars as people are more likely to read this

You get a resonance that is wonderful to hear when streaming. It is very handy on this device, as with later Samsung devices, to have all the hard buttons on the right side of the device. This prevents one from accidentally invoking another feature, such as Bixby, when grasping the phone. You will see lots of reviews discussing the camera features, which I use, but I am going to talk about accessibility features, since hardly any review features these.I use the TalkBack screen reader with the device, and Samsung's TalkBack has come a long way since its troubling debut early last year. They have already come out with an updated TalkBack version on the heels of Google's latest iteration, and now, I find no difference in performance, although Google's version 12.2 has a couple extra features, such as an image recognition feature and eliminating volume buttons slider control, substituting with an up or down scroll finger swipe. As of a couple days ago, the Samsung TTS version is on a parr with the flagships, a request I first put in when I got my A53. I learned that these updates come sllightly later to mid-range phones, such as the A53.The only other change I would make to the phone is to increase the haptic intensity, but certainly not a deal breaker, just a preference. To a sighted person, tactile haptic feedback is like visual screen intensity. The phone functions quickly and efficiently, and is a great work horse. I like a phone to do what I want it to do, when I want it to. I have over 100 apps on my phone and operate out of the apps tray, as I have it organized alphabetically, and don't allow app additions to my home screen. I use the home screen as a landing page for my time and weather widget, and let the phone do the organizing for me which has saved me countless hours deciding about and organizing home screens. In summary, unless you have to have a flagship, or prefer the bigger screen, you will be pleasantly surprised with the A53 and glad of the purchase. Should Samsung take away any more features, other than the SD card slot from their mid-ranger or budget phones, Samsung and I will part company after eight years. But for now, I am a "happy camper."

Fantastic phone - The perfect midranger

I use my phone to surf the web, check email, listen to music, YouTube videos. The display (6.4 inches Super AMOLED) is in a word an over achiever. Everything looks great on the A54. I had a Galaxy A50 and there is NO comparison. The battery is another great plus for A54. 5000 mAh is about the largest you'll find in any phone today. There is a setting for only using 85% of the battery's capacity - a great option to extend the life of the battery and the phone.Another great thing about the A54 (and Samsung) is four years of One UI/Android updates and five years of security updates.I haven't mentioned the camera yet simply because I haven't used it much. It really does look that good!To sum up I feel the Galaxy A54 provides great value at a very competitive price. Having "extras " like an IP68 rating and expandable storage only sweeten the deal

From LG G7 to Galaxy A53

I switch from a LG G7 maybe 3 month ago and I'm not totally satisfied.Good point : - The battery is good and I was suprised. A good upgrade from my previous phone.-The size is overall good. My hand are pretty short, yet I have no problem using it with one hand and it's still big.-More choice of cover to protect it (but the LG G7 had almost nothing, so it might not be the most accurate opinion)-The brightness is good (min. dosen't blind you at night and you see pretty well in bright sunlight too) but I must say, sometimes the brightness sensor is quite slow/I must adjut the brightness by myself since it don't change (mostly while I need to check something at night, like I forgot to set my alarm for the next day, the brightness (in auto mode) is pretty low, ... MoreI switch from a LG G7 maybe 3 month ago and I'm not totally satisfied.Good point : - The battery is good and I was suprised. Maybe I just didn't find how to change some preference in my cellphone yet, but it comes back to my point, not as easy than my previous phone.-I don't like the touchscreen that much, I don't know if it lacks precision, but do a lot of mistakes while typing. You could say I'm not used to it yet, but after three month of use, I think I should be used to it by now.-The major downgrade I had was from the speed and performance while "gaming". I used to play the mobile games "Injustice : God's among us" and "Bloon TD 5" on my LG G7 and I had no problem, but with this brand new phone, it kept lagging, freezing and crashing. I know it's not the best phone if you intend to play, but from the specs, it was supposed to be better than my LG G7 and apparently, it is not...Sometimes, I have problems during some phonecalls where the other person can't hear me, but I can't say if it's a microphone problem since it's almost always with the same 2/3 persons, I have no problem with other people...I haven't really test the water and dust proof. I can't say if it's a good long term cellphone either at the moment. In conclusion, I believe it is far from being the best/my favorite cellphone. I was really shock by the lack of "power" of this cellphone, especially since it's brand new, I had a Galaxy S3 a while ago and at the end of its "life" (3-4 years), it seems like it lost a little bit of power/became slower, which I belive is normal, almost all my phone had something like this, but this one is brand new and can't outperform my 5 years old phone? Other than this, the cellphone is ok, my other "bad points" aren't major issues. For the price I paid (300$ canadian, almost 55% discount while I bought it), I believe that it's pretty good, but I think that the brand new price (650$ I belive) might be a bit too expensive for what it's really worth.

Great phone

I bought the A53 5G knowing it had the Samsung Exynos processor and it is good. Samsung's battery optimization software helps protect, prolong and improve the endurance of the battery. With battery saver, the battery capped at 85% charge, and other optimizations made by the phone, I am getting a full day's use without a problem. By capping the battery to 85%, it reduces the degradation of the battery's capacity and sometimes (in one study) improves the capacity over time.Performance is great, the screen is beautiful with 120hz and 60hz, I rarely use 120hz because Youtube video(s) are capped at 60hz and gaming doesnt go beyond 60fps, so the 120hz only helps when scrolling or reading the news, so I turn it off most of the time. If you are not gaming, Battery Saver caps the CPU speed of the phone to 70% and it works great even during gaming, and it prolongs the phone's battery even longer. If you are just reading the news, watching videos, or shopping online there is no need to use 100% of the CPU speed, and it increases the battery life even longer.Fast charging works with a Samsung Fast charger, I am getting less than 40mins from 20% to 85%, and that is enough for the entire day for me. I try to keep the battery between 20% and 85%. It would probably go to 100% if I turned off the battery protect feature as the charging slows down as it hits the cap that is set (85% or 100%).In terms of performance, Samsung has made numerous updates to the phone and the performance has improved, it is best to give Samsung more time to improve the Exynos processors and software to make it great over-time.The camera is excellent, with the NPU (Neutral Processing Unit/AI-Machine Learning), it is able to capture photos with great quality, colour and edit them to make imperfections better. For the price, the A53 5G gives you the 5G features most people need, the camera, the performance, and the battery life for a price that is reasonable. You buy this phone because of the above features and the long-term support of 5 years of security updates and 4 years of major OS updates.

I have used this phone for around a year now and am really happy with it. It's smooth, fast, and runs games better than most other phones I have used before. The camera is overall wonderful to use and lets me take photos with excellent quality, but only at 0.5-1x zoom. The main issue with it is that from 2x onwards, the quality significantly reduces and takes poor quality pictures. Similar features in darker environments, but zoom does not change the quality. Other than that, I have took many great photos with this phone!Another feature is audio. It's great, but could use a headphone jack. The only things that it really needs (in my personal opinion) is a headphone jack and a higher quality 2-10x camera. A great choice for its price!

What a crappy phone, and I use the middle school terminology instead of the adult word that starts with an sh!++¥. Why you ask, okay let me paint you a scenario. You're at the gym on Spotify playing your favorite tunes, you just got off the treadmill and you head to the sauna room. Now mind you. You have an otterbox on the phone. Well as you go in for a 20 minute meditation routine, that includes a quick picture of your meditation, you also want to post it on social media. Now I'm assuming we're all here because we love androids and it's tech capabilities and we know how to multitask all these functions that I've mentioned above in less then a minute. Are you still with me? So if it's the ram or the processor, it's all garbage. I'm trying to multitask. All I can say is, from the Solution engineer, to the technical architect, all the way down to the developer and QA. PLEASE DO BETTER!! Sincerely an avid fan of tech and androids.

Mediocre offerings from Samsung's phone lines
26 July 2023

I bought this phone several months ago because it was the last Samsung phone with expandable memory. I wish the S line had maintained expandable memory and audio jacks, because those are the features I actually want, and the S line offers a smaller "normal" size option as well. (Frankly, I wish they had maintained longer support for old phones; my S7 Edge still works better than this one, it's just "out of date" and no longer supported.)It should be telling that a 7-year old phone works better than this one (and maybe the S line too, because it's a software problem). It "conveniently" tries to save you battery by running your apps in battery saving mode, unless you go opt out each app manually. Thanks, I love missing notifications! (sarcasm)It will also intermittently just stop checking for notifications/updates altogether, with no sign that it has done so, until you realize it's been awfully quiet for a long time.So maybe this is a software issue, in which case the Samsung mobile lines in general are a problem, but ultimately this has been very disappointing from a company that has tried to innovate hardware and produced some very good mobile tools in the past. Frankly, overall, the performance is so bad I'm glad I didn't spend an extra $800-1200 dollars on top of this for a top-of-the-line S model, and I'm increasingly unlikely to consider Samsung for my next phone, either.Support has also been utterly impossible to get. The website is useless, and Samsung Members Support app is a joke. I have submitted multiple problems/requests for support, only to be met with clueless responses time after time. They are completely unserious about supporting their products.Overall, a frustrating disappointment.

Normal ear jacks were fine.

I bought this through "Freedom" and once out of the store after signing onto a plan I need out of I went into the subway, took out my headphones and went crazy examining it and realizing there was no standard port for them. Then I paid more for an adapter somewhere else, and that worked for a while. Then I couldn't even use those without audio issues, control issues and sometimes a shimmer like the phone had been electrocuted in a cartoon. Next I broke down and bought wireless earbuds and have burned out from trying to discover what app I have to download to allow the to work. I can play audio files or watch on-line contend but not with any earbuds. And even when earbuds worked for bit the start of any song would be clipped. I can play audio files or watch on-line contend but not with any earbuds. And even when earbuds worked for bit the start of any song would be clipped. The rest of the phone is much like my last one the Galaxy 7 which I only had to give up after some droppage caused a crack, some fluid inside blocking info at the top, and the (in)sensitivity of the touch screen caused me to not be able to answer a call. When I initially complained about no port on the A535G that the Freedom guy imposed on me, he said "older" phones from 3 years ago had that. I think it should have been disclosed. And they didn't have older models (there, anyway.) Now I have a crackling or silent connection or silence or wireless that will inevitably fall out. That is NOT progress. I shouldn't have to take a course in making by bluetooth find the right device or how to ensure it connects. Also, there seem to be too many apps that come with it, items that might be piggy backing as some sort of deal with Samsung, offering services I don't care about. And when I have tried to play audiotracks that I copied over from my old phone I am stopped by being asked to make a choice between too companies I NEVER needed to play files I downloaded. Even if I used a "convert youtube to mp3" tool, I should be able to play that mp3 forever even if the original poster on youtube has set the video to private or deleted on his end. It should still exist and be playable without connection to youtube and it should play as an mp3 without seeking permission. Without spotify or the youtube player, my last phone just played mp3 files on their own. I don't know what is up with that. Despite the waiver you end with forcing us to agree, if you are going to edit this review you asked for then don't bother publishing it because I don't need the fame. I also have no criteria for the star ratings provided so you can disregard those. They are as meaningless as some of the apps I have never heard of. Insist that any sales person DISCLOSE whether the cell relies on wireless or wonky adapters and whether there is a brand or website we HAVE TO download something from. I want to throw this phone at the wall or at the head of the sales guy. That said, at least people who greeted me a week later at a Samsung store were helpful enough to temporarily make some problems go away. But the issues that are persistent ruin any pride of ownership.
