This new Galaxy Note from Samsung is a real titan of a smartphone. So many things in it that are great. Customization options are through the roof, build quality is
phenomenal, and the overall item is worth the high price in my experiences so far.To start, I was getting quite grouchy with my old Note 3 because of the app permissions that

And it was an accept them all, or no update/no app. On the Note 8, Samsung (or maybe it was Android) gave us the ability to select which individual permissions for each app are enabled or disabled. Yahoo! The other surprising customization options was icons, themes, and wallpapers. Astounding level of customization there. Icons can have their own theme, independent of wallpaper and other elements. Or, the Samsung themes can have a unified theme for all parts of the device (call screen, contacts, menus, icons, sounds effects, etc). I've snooped around and combined a basic facsimile to a Star Trek theme with custom sounds from the NSTEnterprises and the Red Alert wallpaper to make my perfect "tricorder/Star Trek" look and sounds for my device. The lack of a hard home button and the softkeys was a bit of a transition for me, yet Samsung put in a nice option of having the screen buttons locked on all the time, appearing at a swipe from screen bottom, or having a button to toggle between lock and hidden (much like Windows pop up bar). And the speed of the hardware in astonishing. I've done so much already that my old Note 3 barely did or did only ok on. I run the Knights of the Old Republic for Android game on it and there is not one hiccup. And the S Pen makes playing so many games that much easier.S Pen functions I've still to delve into a lot, yet it seems to have been massively expanded on from my Note 3 era. Very smooth. I've just had such a great time with the freedoms Samsung built in that I can't find much to complain about. Only qualm is moving my Note 3 S Notes over to the new Samsung Notes turned them from editable notes into notes with pictures of my old notes in them. So I essentially have to retype all my notes, though since the originals are there in picture form not too bad.Fingerprint sensor is a bit oddly placed, not too bad for me since I have big hands and a case that helps me find the sensor over the camera lens. Bixby is all but useless for me, as is the dedicated button for it. I've hit it more than I like going for the volume keys. The stock Gallery app is also pretty bad after my Galaxy Note 3. Very, very few options for display and organization. Another small annoyance is the constant reminders from the camera to clean it because "camera works better when clean". Yeah, well, I work outdoors so a smudge is almost assured each and every day. Camera picture quality is not degraded except by the most obvious of smudges. Quality of the camera is top notch too. Still testing how far it can go.So overall, hard to be disappointed with this device. USB-C, wireless fast charging, astonishingly efficient battery, all the great things they advertised plus a number of other things less talked about.... Show more

Or they never use any of the cool features that come with it, so why are you spending so much extra money on something you barely use?For me personally, this phone is amazing. I've had it for a year and it's definatly the best phone I've owned thus far (and the most expensive phone). It's extremely fast, has tons of memory, great camera, I love the s-pen, the note capability, the finger print scanner on the back vs. on the home button, the side display and edge apps and so much more. Two things I don't like one is the over all size/aspect ratio. It's awkwardly tall and I have small hands so it's kind of hard for me to use one handed, but it's not like I didn't know that coming into it. Now-a-days most phone are getting bigger so there aren't too many option if you want a smaller phone. Also the finger print scanner is great that it's on the back instead of the front, BUT it is in the most unconformable place. It is very high up on the phone (again small hands, hard to reach) and right next to the camera so I end up putting my finger on the camera, smudging it up all the time. With that said, I did see that the new Note9 has moved the scanner below the camera which is great.I am sad to say I've only had this phone for a year and I just ordered a new one. Out of the blue the lock/unlock button stopped working. It will turn the screen off but not back on. If I want to use my phone I have to restart it ever single time. I can't unlock with my finger print, nor with the hard-press home button. I even tried downloading a few different apps to bypass to wake my screen but nothing has worked. Not only is the lock button not work but my screen flashes white unexpectedly now as well. Either parts of the screen (horizontal lines) or the entire screen flashes white and will not stop unless I restart my phone. I am completely unsure of why this is happening, I did not drop by phone but I did leave it unattended at work for a few minutes the day it started acting up. I suppose someone could have knocked it onto the ground and put it back without telling me. Otherwise it may be some sort of defect with the phone.Either way, I'm ordering another Note8 because I do really like the phone!... Show more

The screen is not as remarkably large compared to the S series counterpart, but creates a better viewing experience for movies or two simultaneous apps with a taller screen. When properly configured, the battery can last at least a full day and night or more. This device competes with the newest of the Note series by properly optimizing the software. Games run much longer at a nearly unnoticeable cost to the quality of the image. The sound quality is hard to differentiate from newer Samsung devices with Dolby Atmos, which makes that feature seem like an unnecessary name drop. Despite being focused on productivity, this is also a good gaming device. I used this device alongside an S10 Ultra and often found myself favoring it, despite forcing myself to assimilate to the newer device. This is a reliable phone and more than justifies the current cost for anyone that is not interesting in the newest technology.... Show more

I got this when I turned 30 and that was 5 years ago. Most efficient and reliable phone I ever owned. I never needed to lug around a laptop whenever I have to do light office work remotely. I can read documents, edit documents, read/review/reply to emails as if working on a computer. With the help of compatible apps, even print docs and pictures like I would in my office set-up. The big display screen, multi window capability and the S-Pen are the best! Made working remotely very easy. If my budget just permitted back then, I would've gotten the one with the higher memory. I took a lot of photos and videos of my first born with this phone and saved a lot of documents for work. In terms of battery, as expected it worn out a little over time but still not a wall ... MoreI got this when I turned 30 and that was 5 years ago. Most efficient and reliable phone I ever owned. Fast, bright, and intuitive (at least when switching from an earlier Note)
4 September 2019
The phone came in generic packaging, but was well packed and completely protected. It looks completely new. Included with it were instructions for initial setup, a charger (Sharkk model HYP-14-1000), and a cable. I upgraded to the Note 8 because I loved the Note 4, but wanted something a little more budget-friendly than the bleeding-edge Note 10. I've had it just a day, and so far I love it! As the phone is unlocked and carrier agnostic, it has none of the bloatware you would find on a carrier's product. I had to bring it to my carrier's store because the SIM card was not the same size as the one in my Note 4 and couldn't simply be transferred. In order to keep it lean and streamlined, I did not permit them to backup/restore my old phone to the new one, but they did ... MoreThe phone came in generic packaging, but was well packed and completely protected. In order to keep it lean and streamlined, I did not permit them to backup/restore my old phone to the new one, but they did handle the setup and put it on their network. I've installed virtually all of the applications I had on my old phone, and they all work great. I've had it powered on for almost 24 hours, and the battery is only down to 65%. The S-Pen feels more sensitive. I use it in Autodesk Sketch Pad, and feel better able to utilize the pressure sensitivity to change the brush strokes. I honestly don't know what I am missing from the later iterations of the Note, but I'm loving the 8. Because the model is a few years old, be prepared to go through a few iterations of security-patch updates as you get started. I'm hoping to continue enjoying this phone for a long time.... Show more

The product that I got was like brand new, not a single scratch or sign of wear anywhere. In the box, I got a pair of headphones and a charger, both seemed originial. I personally use a Note9, and I identify myself as a power user, hence just the three stars. See, the phone I got was not the North American variant. It was originally sold in the UAE, which I tracked down using the IMEI number. It had an Exynos 8895 chipset and a Mali G71 gpu, unlike the North American variant, which uses Snapdragon 835 and Ardeno 540 respectively. Exynos versions are a bit less powerful than Snapdragon equivalents. However, the biggest turnoff for me, personally, was that the phone uses a custom ROM instead of Samsung's original ROM. This means, the phone I got will never receive Samsung's software update. Which means no night mode camera, no knox security, no secure folder. I would not have bought this if I knew what I was going to get. For most people, this might not matter, but for me, it does.... Show more

Last of the old school full featured phones?

This was purchased to replace a Galaxy Note 5 that was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. I do NOT expect this phone to be as durable as the 5, due to the curved "screen edge" design, that replaced a very solid metal chassis rim with fragile glass, but it has expandable memory, which the Note 5 lacks. I am only 2 days into learning my way through the new interface, and I still find it very irritating, but I assume I will get used to it. I am not ready to droip this in the toilet, to see if the standard of waterproofing is up to the Note 5's which survived that test. I may buy a second one just to have a spare on hand, if this one shatters the first time it hits the floor. The camera is not up to modern phone standards, but the battery was adeuate to video a 2 1/2 ... MoreThis was purchased to replace a Galaxy Note 5 that was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. The camera is not up to modern phone standards, but the battery was adeuate to video a 2 1/2 hour concert this evening. I bought it for features the new phones have eliminated: expandable memory, headphone jack, heart rate sensor and pulse oxymeter. I bought this instead of another Note 5 cuz I wanted expandable memory and USB-C. .... Show more

Note 7 Was A Better Phone
17 May 2019
This phone has been a nightmare since day one and I have had 2 of them and would have had more if US Cellular would have actually had them. It ran great until the first update and since then it just gets worse. Now since the Pie 9.0 update I might as well live hooked to the charger. I have preformed everything known to try and fix the battery issue to witch nothing works. Just seems to get even worse. I have all apps turned off and background blocked on them. And have several disabled. But the only change is a battery that dies faster. Then, we have the service issue. I have never ever no matter where I was in a big city or in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky, my phone always always worked. Not now. I have never ever no matter where I was in a big city or in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky, my phone always always worked. Not now. I am lucky if I receive a text the same day the other person sent it. And phone calls yeah not happening.. For the amount of money I spend a month (400.00) for 3 Samsung phones and only 2 work one would think I would have service that frickin works. Evidently not, cuz I definitely don't thanks to the Pie 9 update..Next issue is the screen, have had my phone in a case and screen protector since day one, and on Jan 2,2019 it fell out of my pocket and the screen shattered. Of course it's going to cost out the waszoo to get insurance to replace it, but it will be with a refurbished phone.. Like I paid how much, oh yeah 900 bucks for this phone and 12 bucks a month for extra insurance and your going to give me a refurbished phone.. Hmm not happening. This screen is supposed to be the best of the best and not break like ones of the past. Yeah right, this phone screen shattered quicker than any Samsung I have ever had before. And I even ran over one several times and it still never shattered..I am about ready to just give up on having a cell phone all together, with the insane astronomical price of phones not sure how they expect people to pay for them and then we some how do and they never work as they tell you they will. Now, I'm stuck with a phone that 95% of the time does not receive or will not make calls and does not receive or send text messages. Best part is I'm the one who gets to continue to pay 25 bucks a month until the 900 bucks for the phone is paid for in hopes of getting a new phone that might maybe hopefully work, highly doubtful but one can only hope...... Save your money or buy an iPhone.

If you are planning to spend $700+ on a phone then don't buy a Samsung in the U.S. I will build a case in favor of my statement. First let me give you a little context. I pre-ordered this phone from Samsung's website before it came out and have been using this phone from September of 2017. My phone is not subsidized by any carrier and has no branding. Before this, I have used a Nokia Lumia 925, 2013 Moto X, 2014 Moto X, Honor 8. I have also been an integral part of the decision making, set-up and usage processes for my wife's Nexus 4, One plus one, iPhone 7. Apart from this, I have bought and used iPhone 5, iPhone SE, Moto E4, Moto G5, Xiaomi Note 4 for family members. The following are the reasons I do not recommend buying this phone -1. Apart from this, I have bought and used iPhone 5, iPhone SE, Moto E4, Moto G5, Xiaomi Note 4 for family members. The following are the reasons I do not recommend buying this phone -1. My unlocked Note 8 does not support Wi-Fi calling or VoLTE on AT&T network (it does on O2 in the U.K.). Samsung will not protect her customers from the carriers in the U.S. The internet claims such a thing does not happen with apple's unlocked phones. During 3 months of summer internship in downtown Manhattan, I had no network at my work place. I scrambled to get Wi-Fi calling on my $1000 phone. None of my efforts were successful. AT&T did not help, neither did Samsung or FCC. Imagine spending that amount of money and not getting features that older apple phone has.2. Verizon's website says that my unlocked galaxy note 8 is ineligible for their network! My wife's AT&T branded unlocked iPhone 7 is eligible for Verizon network. So, I cannot move out of AT&T, while my wife can because she is an apple customer.3. I have to wait for android updates for more than a year, while my wife asks me if I can see my daily phone usage metrics like she can on her 30 month old iPhone (a feature available to newer version of android and iOS).4. The finger print scanner on this phone sucks (compared to even the most inexpensive phone that I have used with a finger print scanner - the $100 Moto E4).It sucks to be a Samsung user.... Show more

This phone and other new Samsung phones are a terrible value for the average user in my opinion. The only upgrade from the Note 5 for me that was substantially better was the slightly increased accuracy of the pen, but thats for drawing and unless you're an artist, i don't think its worth it. (pen pressure is similar) In my opinion the PIE update, which you cannot revert from is very ugly and requires a lot of work to change significantly, having to opt in to Samsung's tracking and ad systems to access their store just to change icons and wallpaper, or use an app from google play which may have a similar problem. I also think the phone is a bit ugly and the way it wrap around on the edges changes the look of video and images, ruining the "im looking through the screen" feeling for me a bit. You can get perfectly good used phones on Craigslist for $50 to $150 dollars that do everything the average user would need. I saw an LG G4 (my G3 was great) for $20 and in great shape. With deals like that around, i can't recommend this. Worse than that though, is that both Google and Samsung barrage the user to kind of an incredible degree with notifications and pop up messages pester you about this or that feature, trying to get you to use other services, not because they are useful necessarily, but to sell you stuff, sell you're data/location/advertising-ID/ and lock you into their systems. It so bad that i would definitely not give a device like this to my parents or other less tech savvy basic users for fear they would throw the phone out of the window. Its just a mess of features with hidden little "gotcha" that they aren't always up front about. Its almost stereotypical used car salesman level of deception here that i don't think many would be happy to have their loved ones deal with. For advanced users, I think the worst thing is the lack of customization. The shear number of little nagging "why can't i do this like i used to" issues and deficiencies make the phone a headache to use sometimes. Its like they decided to attempt to make the phone for the 51% of users to save money on development, throwing out useful features for the 49%. Furthermore, the logic behind where settings are makes little sense much of the time. Try to find the setting for making the brightness slider appear on notifications "swipe down" menu (first swipe). Good luck. Try to find the toggle for data on/off. Oops, they removed it entirely to make it harder to turn off, its buried deep in the main options still. Its almost as if we customers were actually enemies they were forced to sell to instead of their fellow human beings. Its not behavior i want in my society or my phone, or other people's phones. So 1 star. What bothers me the most is that these are very likely wealthy people at the very top making these decisions in the name of gaining more money. These hair pulling issues could easily be solved with a little more cash spent on dev and support, requiring the heads of the company to be satisfied with a little less spending cash. But again, by far the biggest issue and why i recommend older phones is that unless you are a heavy phone user, use intense apps like games or need the latest and greatest just for fun, older phones are fantastic value and deserve appreciated IMO. They look better too IMO and don't try to control your behavior as much.... Show more
