A good phone but a poor transfer
If I look at the quality of this phone in isolation, it's great. The screen is good, the flip is novel (though I admit when I'm at home I just keep it unfolded on my desk or coffee table) and the software is Android with Samsung frills on it, so that's good too.Where it falls down for me is that while it's an Android phone, the transition from my old phone (also an Android) to this was not simple. You need to hold it with one and open with the other, so not terribly good on the accessibility front perhaps?A pain with Samsung is that it's menu is a horizontal scroll rather than vertical so it's not as easy to find an app beginning with W unless you have it on your homepages.The camera is great and a novel discovery was that you can turn on the front screen when using the rear facing camera, so that you can use the bigger/better camera to take a selfie and make sure you're actually in shot first.Overall it's a good phone, I'll get past the pain that was the first evening transferring it from my old phone and get used to it soon enough.Having now spent two weeks with the flip 5 while it's useful having a bigger screen on the front I'm not entirely sure that the cost difference between a four and a 5 is justified by that and the other small changes between the two. The biggest screen is useful for reading texts and responding to WhatsApp messages and things like that however the smaller screen on the flip 4 with perfectly adequate for showing simple notifications and more often than not I find myself looking at a notification on the cover screen and then opening the phone to respond anyway. Being a Samsung phone most of the apps that can use the cover screen are Samsung own apps.... Show more

Following on from the Z Flip 4 the 5 arrived, I have spent a little over 2 weeks with it now as a daily driver.Samsung made the delivery box a little special by adding some Flip details, packaging was smaller and more eco friendly.Comparison between the 4 and 5 are limited, much of the Z Flip 4 and features are the same such as the battery and camera which I would have expected to have a bump up. To Samsung's credit the gap between the screens has disappeared when closed, this is more impactful than people give it credit, however still there is no IP dust resistance which incredibly frustrating, a case is a must to limit dust egress.The external screen is a big step up, I never used it on the 4 as I found it too small and awkward and pointless. The Z Flip 5 external screen is clear and very useful to read and reply quickly to messages, however the pixel density is disappointing, I can see the pixels which is not what I have come to expect on a premium phone.Out of the box the use of the external screen is limited, you need to download additional Samsung tools to make it more functional, most users won't bother and this feels like a missed opportunity by Samsung to bring customisation to the masses.I used the 5 for selfies, the viewfinder use is a good idea as you can use the better external camera over the limited internal camera, I have yet to see if this can be used on video calls with colleagues.Build quality is great, I prefer the matt finish on the 5 to the metal parts, it brings a more polished feel over the shiny steel from the 4.OneUI has had no big changes between the 4 and 5, it is clean and simple, I do wish it was a little clearer at times and aligned more closely to standard Android out of the box.The transfer tool to move to the Z Flip 5, all my settings came across with a minimum of fuss, this was a real bonus and something that I have come to expect when changing devices.Lets move on to the biggest features of the phone that is largely overlooked, the new hinge is great, closing the phone completely flush with no gaps is great and the hinge design is clever, it feels smoother to use compared to the 4. But it's almost like a trick has been missed, there has been no reduction in the impact of the crease on the screen, it's still very noticeable in certain conditions and can be felt when scrolling.The Z Flip 5 is definitely evolution of an existing platform rather than revolution.... When the Samsung Z Flip 5 was announced I thought this is the time to take the plunge.After my first few days I must say I'm not disappointed by it.The zero gap hinge is great and I got for the Starter pack that includes a great clear case and fast charger, as well as the official cover screen protector, both which I highly recommend.I wasn't sure if the crease would be an issue for me, or how I would use the cover screen exactly, but I was intrigued to find out.Unfolded it is just like any other top tier slab phone, and while I do notice the dip in the middle, I've gotten used to it being there and I don't notice it when watching something full screen which is great.When folded either slightly or all the way, however, that things get quite interesting. You can activate this for other apps not optimised for it if you wish too.When fully folded, a few widgets can be accessed via the cover screen, and taking selfies, checking the weather, messages and replying were very convenient in this mode with my medium sized hands and fingers. I loved the customisation you can do for the cover lock screen.Once I installed a third party app from the Samsung App store and enabled a cover screen feature, also recommended in various online reviews, I could use a lot more apps for music, contactless payments, ordering taxis, among other messaging, fitness and media apps. I definitely recommend doing that.With my medium use of the phone, the battery gets me through the whole day and then some, and the fast charger gets from 5% to 100% after 1hr 20min which was very quick. Fast charging does heat up the phone a bit and for better battery longevity I'd rather charge it up with a slower charger routinely. The battery settings interestingly had a setting to only charge to 85% for battery longevity which I need to read into more as I thought not charging to 100% would be worse for battery memory.Anyway, overall I love this phone and would fully recommend it if you can stomach the price or get a good deal on it then go for it. You'll enjoy using your phone in new ways and being able to fit it into smaller pockets is so much more convenient (despite making it a bit thicker this is definitely a great form factor!).... Once I opened the case and held it in my hands, I felt really positive about the whole phone.First of all it is a solid phone and feels quite full in the hands.The metallic case feels quite sturdy. The flipping of the phone is effortless and doesn't make any noise and looks quite clean and neat. The screen doesn't show much signs off folding and the display is clearcut. I started using maps on it and it works effortlessly.The main screen looks a bit elongated when switched off but not much when things are in display. One important thing I liked from Samsung is it comes installed with a screen protector.. what a nice thought from Samsung.. hats off...The phone also seems to have one of the best processor out there and have excellent multifunctionality with not heating up. I could download a big app while simultaneously playing a high quality video on what's app with not much effort.The battery although is small compared to some of the recent china manufactured phones but it lasted a whole 36 hrs with moderate use and a full day with heavy use taking videos and making at least 4 hrs of video conferencing calls.The software seems quite intuitive with good interface and I could transfer all my data from iOS very easily at the time of setup. The apps open and close effortlessly .The camera slot doesn't take up half of the back like recent phones and looks aesthetically very neat. It has 2 circles for cameras and the best thing I felt is it's easy to take pics with the smaller screen and it looks very clear. The pics are of good quality.There is also an optical zoom which works well.To summarise,I felt very happy to get this excellent phone and am looking forward to use its functionality more.. However, with any new technology there are teething issues.I have had my flip z3 for just over 12 months and almost to the day of anniversary, I had the dreaded crease in the screen protector, which eventually turned into a full blown tear and removal of the screen protector. Took to a local EE store who said Samsung will charge me around £300 for a screen repair/replacement. I was ever so slightly stunned by this, given its a commonly known issue and at least in my eyes a manufacturing fault/issue.Appreciate the concept of additional insurance but in all honesty that ... At that point, I might as well bite the bullet, take an early upgrade or just get a second hand iPhone and bin this one.I've had Samsung, iPhone, Nokia and all manner of weird and wonderful phones in the past. I don't consider myself biased or particularly bothered about brand loyalty. Samsung have always made some interesting and novel phones and android has always been a great system for a whole host of apps. I have to say at this point I think once the novelty of opening and closing it wore off, I started to see it as essentially just another android phone. Given the fact that I now have a phone with a known development issue and will be asked to pay an extortionate amount to fix it, with a high possibility it will break again in 12 months, it's left a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth with Samsung.If it was free to repair and largely clear that it was due to a common issue (and not just personal misadventure) then I'd be fine with losing my phone for a week here and there to get it sorted, but to pay on top is in my opinion, for a global corporation, absolutely ludicrous.When the screen eventually cracks completely and causes issues, I'll have to just fork out for a used iPhone/alternative android and will ultimately never purchase a Samsung again. Genuine shame as I've never really had major issues before, but can't justify the risk anymore.... Show more
