Average soundbar

I bought this sounds bar a year ago and it has average sound. Sometimes the bar and the additional Samsung speakers I bought sound good, but typically it's nothing to get excited about. Also there are issues with the soundbar connecting with the wifi speakers. They don't always connect. The final issue is that updates do not always a happen as they should. I found out when I was about 5 updates behind even though automatic updates was on. Just cycling on/off doesn't help the update. It has to be hard reset for the update to install. I spoke with customer service they told me this was normal. It does look nice.I'm not happy with the price I paid for it and I'm sure there are better soundbars for the same price.

The HW-Q700A lacks the side firing speakers like the Sonos Arc soundbar, but I don’t have the best room to take advantage of such features as I have open walls to the side. I live in a small studio condo and I wanted my entertainment setup to look as sleek and minimalist as possible. This meant sacrificing the idea of using a BluRay player to feed uncompressed Dolby Atmos or DTS-HD Master Audio signal to the soundbar. I wanted to go all streaming to minimize wires and extraneous hardware, which for the moment, at best, meant getting compressed Dolby Atmos or other object-based mixing. That in turn capped my desire to get more extravagant and pricier soundbar options, like the Sonos Arc or Sennheiser Ambeo. In other words, I felt the HW-Q700A was well matched to my room and intended source fidelity. This model was also the minimum level that could connect to Alexa by WiFi (as opposed to just Bluetooth like the Q600A). It doesn’t have Alexa built in like the Q800A, which looking back would’ve been nice as it would’ve allowed me to not need my Echo Dot. Finally, the Q700A already had a price and overall rated sound advantage over the Sonos Arc by having a sub that’s optional on the Arc. And with the pricing adjustments, the Q700A with the optional rear speakers can cost the same or a lot less than the Sonos Arc, which then makes the big picture no-brainer case for this bar over the Arc for most needs.TEST TV AND SOURCE: The TV was a 2018 LG OLED55E8PUA. This TV can decode Dolby Atmos in compressed form through the Dolby Digital Plus codec and output from its HDMI ARC (not eARC). Source was from LG TV or Apple TV 4K streaming device apps from streaming services: Vudu, Netflix, and HBO Max. Since it’s not a qualifying Samsung TV, I also can’t take advantage of the Q-Symphony sound integration with the TV’s built-in speakers nor use the TV’s mic’s to calibrate the soundbar to the room’s shape. It’s an interesting way to get folks into the Samsung ecosystem.STYLING AND FIT/FINISH: Outstanding. Boxy faceted edges in my eyes looks better against a straight-edged TV. The profile is nice and low that doesn’t occlude the view of my TV, although the latest LG OLEDs will require either wall mounting or some elevated platform to rise above the soundbar. The metal housing looks high grade even up close.SMARTPHONE APP and PHYSICAL REMOTE: This is outstanding to a level I can’t imagine being beat by any other. It’s very nice looking, controls a lot of features that the physical remote controls. The app currently cannot control the narrower-band specific EQ settings, the on/off toggle for the Acoustic Beam virtualization, and the upper front speaker gain.INPUT OPTIONS, INPUT DETECTION, CONNECTION STABILITY: The RTINGS.com article on this soundbar gave this a 10/10 because it has all the possible input options one would want. For TV owners with just an ARC port and want the uncompressed, this soundbar with multiple HDMI inputs (including eARC) and 4K passthrough would be advantageous over a single HDMI port Sonos if one wants to hear uncompressed Atmos from a UHD disc source with uncompressed Atmos/DTS:X signals. With this soundbar, one can run an output signal from a UHD disc player to the soundbar input and then backpass the 4K signal to the TV’s ARC port. For Sonos, because it has just one HDMI port, a TV with just ARC would need a HD Fury Arcana plugged in line from a UHC disc source, which some users out there isn’t always glitch-free.OVERALL SOUND: I think the high frequency is good, the mid-range punchy, and even the bar’s woofer-frequency response is authoritative. The voice comes along crystal clear so I only wonder how much enhancement the Active Voice Amplifier (AVA) in the higher 800+a Series would add. The bar seems to sound better for TV/movie programming than straight audio tracks compared to my Denon HEOS 7 using the same music sources. The only sonic deficiency is what comes out of the subwoofer. For one, while it’s deep and plenty powerful (enough to rattle and buzz my desk some meters away while playing Dunkirk), the subwoofer doesn’t give the deepest response. Moreover, I don’t think the bass is clean as if the speaker enclosure or something else is adding extraneous reverberation from what’s intended. This discourages using the highest bass equalizer setting. Nowhere near as clean or deep as my cheap Edifier S350DB subwoofer hooked up earlier. But it’s not bad considering all the other great things this bar does for the street price. If one wants the deepest bass in a Samsung bar, it’s a good reason to go for at least the Q800A (with a far heavier sub) and higher models.SOUNDSTAGE and SURROUND SOUND CAPABILITY: The RTINGS.com article that just tested in “Standard” DSP mode stated the soundstage is no wider than the soundbar. The soundbar has a DSP mode called “Surround” which greatly enhances the spatial effect well beyond the soundbar’s dimension (especially for some orchestral soundtrack music), but I bet one loses the most precise placement of object sound. Then there is the Acoustic Beam virtualization technology that has many tiny holes projecting different frequencies of sound upward at some angle to further enhance the surround sound and object placement; this wasn’t tested by RTINGS.com. On another Samsung soundbar, this Acoustic Beam feature had 28x2 tiny holes shooting at an 18-degree angle. Turning this on along with the Surround DSP mode really made the soundstage very expansive and mesmerizing.I haven’t really noticed serious overhead effects but didn’t expect so on a system that doesn’t include downfiring ceiling speakers, and my ceiling is 12 feet high. I heard 8’-10’ ceilings are OK for upfiring speaker effects. Only time I feel like something is coming from above is when it’s coming from everywhere like some orchestral soundtrack music. Maybe there should be a small LED on top to light up when overhead effects are projected to make us think we’re hearing something from above.Unlike the Sonos that just supports just Dolby Atmos, this soundbar also supports DTS:X and Dolby Atmos.REAR SURROUND SPEAKERS RECOMMENDED: With such aggressive pricing, I highly recommend to use the saved bucks relative to the competition to get the optional Samsung SWA-9500S wireless speaker kit if you like to get the true cinematic surround experience, which I have.

Make it a theater experience with rear speakers
16 January 2022

Remember that SWA-9500S/ZA is the only compatible rear speakers for this soundbar. Trust me I was misleaded by bestbuy associates with other model but nothing is compatible other than 9500S. The soundbar is too powerful that it overpowers the woofer. They should have provided a bigger size woofer but if you are under 70% of volume its great.... decrease the volumes a little bit in the soundbar channels to match the woofer and you will be all set. Talking about sound experience, I wanted to instantly add the rear speakers for best dolby atmos experience. Sound bar is 3.1.2 channel. Rear speakers are 2.0.2 channel which makes the setup of 5.1.4 channel which is exceptional. I have a 75 inch QN85A TV with it. Any video you play with dolby support makes you immerse in the sound experience. You will be inside the scene. VVERY IMPORTANT TIP- If you have rear speakers set up, DO NOT USE Q-SYMPHONY feature. This feature just limits many features of soundbar and it will not be great experience. You cannot even turn on surround feature on your speakers so not worth it. The TV speakers are so so tiny that the soundbar over powers them even in 10% volume. So in a nutshell, get the rear speakers setup and turn off QSymphony, tweak the volumes in the channels to match the woofer volume and you will be all set. Finally, it will be cheaper and better experience than Q850A soundbar (More expensive overall) which have rearspeakers with is just 2.0 channel

Outstanding sound bar
28 September 2021

Summary: I love this speaker. It hits way above its weight class with strong powerful sound, great feature set and a good look overall. It is easy to set up and can be expanded for greater surround sound.Unboxing: The box is extremely form fitting to the device and comes packaged in an L shape box. Inside you will find the speaker, an HDMI cable, power cables, the subwoofer, a remote and some documentation. It is easy to set up and can be expanded for greater surround sound.Unboxing: The box is extremely form fitting to the device and comes packaged in an L shape box. Inside you will find the speaker, an HDMI cable, power cables, the subwoofer, a remote and some documentation. It is well packed to protect it in transit and easy to unbox.Set up: If you simply want to plug it in and go that is available to you. The Subwoofer is wireless but it is pre-synced with the sound bar so you won’t have to do anything fancy to get them paired. There is a separate power cable for the subwoofer and the sound bar. The HDMI cable should be connected to the HDMI-ARC connection for greatest feature set and the ability to control the volume and power with just your TV remote. I highly recommend digging through your TV settings and ensuring your sound is set up for some sort of surround compatibility so you don’t limit yourself to a setup that doesn’t bring out the full feature set.I tried further setup on a Samsung S21 Ultra but had some difficulty pairing them together. After a number of tries, it did eventually work and updated the firmware. If you use a Samsung Phone, you can pair it with Samsung Smartthings and add it to your home devices in their ecosystem.Bluetooth streaming is a breeze with Samsung phones and you can simply hover your phone near the device to get them paired up for audio.Use/performance: I tried it out with my Xbox One Series X and Apple TV 4K which both have Atmos support. Configuration on those devices was minimal but you have to ensure Atmos is enabled. Watching a few movies that have Atmos support, I was in love with this speaker. The top firing speakers are not mind blowing but they provide additional fullness to the sound and greater immersion. The sound bar and subwoofer are extremely loud if you so wish and the audio has great contrast between highs and lows. Bass is powerful so I did have to turn that down a bit.Upgrading: There are addition wireless surround speakers available for purchase with this unit but you would have to set them up to pair with the device the first time. If you are looking for better surround, I highly recommend that upgrade for a full 5.1.2 system.Even though the app pairing was a bit wonky, I think the only other thing I would like improved is the build quality of the subwoofer, it feels a little on the cheaper side of build quality. Even with those hits against it, I still give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Slow start but a strong finish

This sound bar has been fantastic. It’s loud, has good clarity, zero distortion and good dynamic range. Sounds are distinct and voices are clearly understood even during scenes with lots of background noise or music. The bar has decent bass further enhanced by the wireless subwoofer. At first, the subwoofer seemed weak. It was so weak in fact, that I couldn’t even tell it was there. I tried everything to get some sort of deep resonating bass but it wasn’t happening. I had already written the bar off as mediocre at best when the bargain brand TV I was using stopped working completely. I replaced the TV with a Samsung Q7 series TV and sound improved dramatically. The bar was louder and clearer sounding and I finally heard the glorious bass that was previously missing. ... MoreThis sound bar has been fantastic. The bar was louder and clearer sounding and I finally heard the glorious bass that was previously missing. The Samsung TV sounded good but I ultimately replaced it with a Sony XBR set and odd as it sounds, this Samsung sound bar for some reason sounds even better on the Sony set than it did on the Samsung set. The bass is deeper and can now even be felt in other rooms during loud, booming action scenes and the dynamic range seems even broader. It’s a head scratcher for sure, but my best guess is maybe the Sony has better sound processing and amplification. All sets used an ARC enabled HDMI port on he TV connected to the same cable which was supplied by Samsung with the bar. No set had any unfair advantage although I expected the Samsung Tv to perform best with the Samsung bar. There appears to be no advantage to matching the bar with a Samsung set. The sound capabilities of the TV will definitely affect the overall sound quality of this bar.Setup is easy. The bar and sub are already paired right out of the box. The included remote is sleek and simplified. It has all the controls I need and none I don’t. The sound bar can be wall mounted or sit flat. The height is low enough to sit in front of a leg mounted set without obstructing any part of the screen. ARC works perfectly with no issues for all devices on their individual inputs. The sound bar controls integrate easily and reliably with smart TV remotes. It turned out to be a pretty good sound bar. I was a little skeptical at first but realize now that the initial low quality TV was to blame, not the sound bar.

Surprising quality, easy to use.

We recently bought a new Samsung TV and decided to get a soundbar to go with it and complete the home media experience (my partner and I have regular movie nights with ourselves and friends). I am an audiophile at heart, so I researched the soundbar offerings available right now for weeks, scouring reviews and forums for information and user experiences.I'm happy to share what I've learned with you because there's some important considerations that went into this decision:1. Music sound quality. Front and center, how do 2021 model Q-series products stack up against other brand competitors like Sonos and Bose. I've owned and used both other brands before and can attest to their clarity and superb construction, the Q-series soundbars are finally knocking on that ... MoreWe recently bought a new Samsung TV and decided to get a soundbar to go with it and complete the home media experience (my partner and I have regular movie nights with ourselves and friends). Music sound quality. Front and center, how do 2021 model Q-series products stack up against other brand competitors like Sonos and Bose. I've owned and used both other brands before and can attest to their clarity and superb construction, the Q-series soundbars are finally knocking on that door and providing textures, rich sound with frequency ranges and clarity I can not just "live with" but enjoy. The other two brands I mentioned still compete and outpass the Samsung for pure music listening and it's the reason I dock a star from the rating, Samsung is still lagging a tiny bit in this area, but that's likely due to the next feature...2. "Media" sound quality (movies, tv, youtube, podcasts etc...). Top of the line. I love it. Especially when paired with the Samsung TV. You can use Q Symphony to get the most out of both devices and it really wins. The additional speakers in the Q700 especially light up the room and really add to the experience. It's clear and balanced the whole time. Very impressed and satisfied here.3. Looks. Very important, we live in a home, not a house. The Q900 was way too big for us and the fabric cover was a "no" from my partner and I. This model has the grill instead and it's way more sleek. The panel display on the front is nice and clear, it's small so longer text has to scroll but whatever, I'm not reading books on this thing so I don't care. Looks gets a great pass, it's a sleek design that looks better in person than the pictures did haha.4. Features. If you have a Samsung TV, get a Q series soundbar. End of story. We're done here, haha. Check your compatibility, of course, but the Q Symphony and AI sound balancing are awesome. There's more to see from this company and their ecosystem of IOT devices, it seems they've made some great strides in collaborating the devices and I'm keen to see more. Conclusion, love it, can recommend it. I'm really into music so it gets docked a star for not being as good as the other brands in this area, but it's a slim margin honestly and all the other stuff above makes up for it. Very happy with my purchase and I sing it's praise when people ask for my advice.

What's Not to Like?

I recently upgraded my living room TV to OLED and this soundbar is the perfect compliment for a more immersive viewing experience. Samsung builds quality products and this one is no different. Both the bar and woofer are heavy and well built. Luckily heavy does not mean bulky. The soundbar sits nicely in front of TV legs/ stands with no obstruction of the screen. The woofer tucks away nicely even on smaller entertainment stands/ shelves. This soundbar is easy to connect with the included HDMI cable or if your TV is WiFi or Bluetooth enabled, that’s another option. There is also a digital optical port, but a cable is not included. My TV has HDMI eARC and this is a game changer. My TV has HDMI eARC and this is a game changer. One cable allows my TV and soundbar to sync perfectly and gives me control of soundbar volume using my TV remote. Of course sound quality is exceptional and should be at this price point. Speaking of price, I’ve seen this soundbar on sale multiple times so watch out for that! Whether you’re watching YouTube, Netflix, or a good old fashioned DVD/ BluRay, voices are crisp and clear and action makes the whole room rumble. This soundbar can get very loud (my poor neighbors) and I haven’t noticed any distortion even at high volume. I live in an apartment currently, but I feel like having this soundbar does allow me to be “future-proof” for when I purchase a house. It is wireless Dolby Atmos surround sound compatible, meaning rear speakers can be added easily for use in a bigger room or even a mini in-home theater. With lots of features, excellent sound quality, and the ability to add additional speakers to a system that often drops in price, what’s not to like?

Worked great for 5 months

Bought the product in November 2021, worked great at first but then noticed that certain devices (more specifically my ps4/ps5) the audio would go out. Didnt think much of it at first. Fast forward 6 months and then the eArc connection goes out. So i plugged it using optical, disappointed since the audio quality droped significantly but nonetheless produced sound as intended. Few dsys later that goes out too. Bluetooth and even the wifi option wouldn't output any sound. Had to reach out to samsung since it was still under warranty. Worst experience ever, first time sending it in, they send it back saying there were no problems. Had to send it a total of 3 times and I've been without the soundbar for 2 months. I'd recommend to get insurance with it if youre thinking of still buying it.

okay speaker system with some flaws
1 January 2022

I was seeking out the speaker for two reasons. For one, I was thinking about upgrading our TV next year and Samsung seems to be the leading option. I wanted a speaker that would natively work with it. Unfortunately, we have a Sony TV right now. While it's a great TV we can't utilize the room calibration and symphony features of the speaker. I also wanted a speaker system with Dolby Atmos support. I've had great experiences with it in the past and definitely want to use it going forward. We don't have the rear speakers to go along with this so the virtualize surroundsound is OK at best. Somethings sound like they're coming from different directions but for the most part, it just sounds better with a higher fidelity. Eventually we will be getting the rear speakers to go along with it hopefully that greatly enhances the surround effect. I haven't noticed much coming from the upward firing speakers so I'm not sure if they are doing that good of a job. The subwoofer is a little bit too strong. You can go from 0 to -6 and then jump all the way down to -12. Unfortunately, the best level for us would probably be -8 but obviously, that is just not an option. I would like a linear scale going from -6 to -12. Overall the speaker system is pretty good.
