Beautiful Display

Samsung has done an excellent job producing a display with beautiful picture quality, fast refresh rate, and lightning fast response time. I paired this monitor with my HP Omen gaming PC, and I'm really enjoying it so far. The unit comes securely and thoughtfully packaged, and includes the monitor, the stand, the power cord/power supply, an HDMI cable, and a display port cable. The stand is highly adjustable and is tall enough that the display can be easily used in portrait mode as well as the traditional landscape mode. The included cables feel very heavy-duty, and are of sufficient length for the average desktop setup. The power cable is proprietary, which is disappointing, since almost every PC and monitor (and printer, etc.) use the same type power plug, but ... MoreSamsung has done an excellent job producing a display with beautiful picture quality, fast refresh rate, and lightning fast response time. The power cable is proprietary, which is disappointing, since almost every PC and monitor (and printer, etc.) use the same type power plug, but this isn't my first Samsung monitor, and the other had a similar power cord/supply arrangement. Assembling the stand and attaching the monitor took just a few seconds and involved a single Phillips screw. I had the monitor setup and powered on in less than fie minutes. Initially, I watched some HD content from Netflix just to get an idea of the picture quality and I watched some college football footage to see how the monitor handles motion. I really love both the bright, colorful and very natural picture, and the almost blur-free and judder-less motion. Next I opened the Xbox app and played Fallout 76 to get a look at the contrast quality with the dark scenes at the beginning of the game. Again, I was impressed. Microsoft Flight Simulator also looked stunning and motion was smooth and natural. If you don't need a UHD display, and 1080p HD with a blazing fast refresh rate and instantaneous response time meets your needs, this will be a fabulous monitor. I think it will also be great for power users who need to have two windows open side by side, but don't have room for a multi-monitor setup, or those who work on legal-sized documents and need the portrait display capability.

You'll have to mess around with the UI to get used to it, I really didn't have any issues finding what I needed. Conclusion: After some testing like the standard UFO monitor test, it confirmed the monitor refresh rate was 240 capable. If you want the most out of the monitor make sure to use compatible GPU, updated drivers and importantly the Display cable; some people think they can get away with using an HDMI cable. I'd recommend this monitor.

The biggest fault is poor/missing/inaccurate documentation and a support team equipped to answer straight forward questions. (See below for my customer support / sales support exchange in attempting to use this monitor for which I purchased it — video calls with zoom and Messenger. Ultimately, having to connect the camera to my MacBook and the MacBook to the monitor via hdmi. These are my findings. If there are ways around these short comings, I was unable to find Google articles or support documents - either missing or failed worked to make them work. ——1) I think the smart features are A) missing important apps that most customers would need: Facebook, Messenger, and Zoom (note you can access via the internet browser but the browser will not allow access to a webcam!) B) half-baked, poorly documented and customer sales support is woefully uninformed a) I tried to follow the instructions to setup a Google Meet, but every set of instructions I followed did not allow me to setup a new Google Meet account on my iPhone and/or iPad.. This would likely be a call to support, but it is not Google Meet I really want to use. Everyone I am meeting with uses Zoom or Messenger Video Calls. B) The mobility app refuses to allow me to fully connect from my iPhone and iPad. They are all on the same Wi-Fi network but they fail to display the screens. I had to purchase screen mirroring apps to display my iPhone and iPad screens on the monitor wirelessly or use a hdmi cable. C) No way to download apps via an App Store Video WebCam Experience: I knew from reading Amazon q&a that the camera wasn’t included, but I waited until I received and setup the monitor before selecting one. Also note that in all of the manuals there is nothing that mentions which cameras are supported and which are not. Nor does it mention that there are only 2 ways / apps that even use the camera. Upon receiving my webcam, I plugged it in and couldn’t get it to recognize that I plugged it in and selected the connect a device - web camera. It instead displayed a message “connect a supported web camera…and listed several Logitech 9xx & StreamCam models and 2 Samsung models. And referred to a document on the web that listed supported cameras. The instructions on the monitor are not current and point you to missing documentation on the web. I called support to see what I must be misunderstanding. The support agent that answered is the only person from whom I received any real support. She confirmed it was missing and said that this isn’t a support call but customer sales support, gave me the number to call. Ultimately, I ended up returning my camera because I could not get anyone to confirm whether it was supported or not…after 2 hours of being passed from one team to another 5 in all and the last one was to pass me to the correct team…15 minutes later my call was dropped. After ordering and receiving the Logitech StreamCam, I tried to connect and use the supported Webcam, but I got the same screen instructing me to plug it etc. But this time, I decided to try differently. I went further and discovered I could get it to activate if I wanted to see myself alongside a video ie exercise see&do. This established the webcam is recognized and works under this scenario. But not very helpful for video calling. Ultimately to use webcam for Zoom or Messenger I had to connect it to my MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro to the monitor. It limits where and how I use this feature.

Fantastic for Gaming! Great for Productivity Also!

This Odyssey G4 gaming monitor from Samsung does not disappoint! I’ve been using this for a few days now both to game (playing some Destiny 2 mostly) and for productivity as well and I’ve really enjoyed using it. If you’re a gamer and you’re looking for very fast refresh and response rates then it’s going to be really difficult to beat this monitor; especially at this price. Yes, there are cheaper monitors but this one is so feature rich and user friendly that I would gladly pay the premium for the Samsung reputation and experience. Gameplay is buttery smooth and having the ability to use FreeSync or G-Sync is awesome. Yes, there are cheaper monitors but this one is so feature rich and user friendly that I would gladly pay the premium for the Samsung reputation and experience. Gameplay is buttery smooth and having the ability to use FreeSync or G-Sync is awesome. I currently have the monitor hooked up to my work/gaming laptop - an ASUS ROG Zephyr with an RTX 3070 and Ryzen 9 5900HS along side an ASUS TUF gaming 32” 1440p curved monitor. Playing games this thing shines. Previously, I’ve been playing on the ASUS monitor or the laptop screen but they’re both limited to 165Hz (though, to be fair, they are also 1440p, so much crisper). The jump from 165Hz to 240Hz is honestly a much larger jump than I realized. Games are just smoother 100% and response feels really good. This brings me to the one minor downside of this monitor and that’s that it’s “only” FHD. So I have an integrated 1440p monitor and an external 1440p monitor alongside a 1080p monitor and even though the difference isn’t vast, it is noticeable. That aside, everything else about this monitor is fantastic. The user interface is top-tier as you would expect from Samsung, the ability use it in portrait mode makes it phenomenal for productivity, HDR, very good color space with lots of adjustments, good black levels for a non-VA panel, great viewing angles, and all the features you’d expect from a gaming monitor. Materials feel very premium and the stand is very sturdy allowing for easy adjustment or rotation of the monitor. If you’re looking to game at 1080p and want a high refresh monitor that won’t break the bank and is feature rich, here it is.

Great monitor with one fatal flaw!
12 December 2022

Almost perfect in every way except for one MAJOR flaw: It STILL suffers from the "screen door" effect when using the 240Hz mode. I thought maybe seven or so months after release Samsung would have solved this problem, so I ordered one during Samsung's Black Friday sale. It was delivered and hooked up to my PC immediately using the display port cable they ship with the monitor. By default it's set to 120Hz mode and you need to go into the monitor menu and change it to 240Hz mode. As soon as I did this I immediately noticed a difference in the monitor's display. It's like looking at the monitor screen through a screen door, with finely thin noticeable lines all throughout the screen. If you disable 240Hz mode and re-enable 120Hz mode the screen door issue disappears. ... MoreAlmost perfect in every way except for one MAJOR flaw: It STILL suffers from the "screen door" effect when using the 240Hz mode. It's like looking at the monitor screen through a screen door, with finely thin noticeable lines all throughout the screen. If you disable 240Hz mode and re-enable 120Hz mode the screen door issue disappears. I should note that my experience with Samsung chat support is very subpar as well. When explaining the issue to them they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about, as if this issue isn't already well known for this monitor. Needless to say this lead to wasting a great deal of time performing useless actions like, "connect the monitor to another device to see if the issue still persists", or "try factory resetting the monitor". Long story short, eventually it led to them saying they would escalate the issue and someone would call me. Well no one ever called me, but I did receive an e-mail saying I should create a repair ticket. I attempted to do so, but the automated system wanted to charge me $230 to send this off for repair. So that lead to another chat support session which eventually lead to chat support creating the repair ticket themselves. They provided a QR code and told me to take the monitor to UPS and have them package it for shipping for repair. So now I'm waiting for a monitor that I just purchased to get repaired and be sent back to me. By the way they don't provide an ETA for repair time and shipping the monitor back. I would like to say it is not all doom in gloom in regard to the monitor though. When I used it in 120Hz mode it was fantastic! The amazingly bright HDR2000 display gets so bright sometimes that I have to squint to not go blind! On the flip side, the black levels are on par with any OLED display I have ever seen, and I am not exaggerating that statement at all! The curved panel took a bit to get used to, but once that happened I actually miss it now that it's gone out for repair. Sitting at just the right distance with the curved panel almost gives it a surround vision vibe. All in all I really do love this monitor and I can't wait to get it back repaired and ready to go!

THE GOOD ~ Bright ~ Good size ~ 240Hz Refresh ~ Easy Buttons ~ Sturdy stand ~ Adjustable stand ~ Comes with HDMI and Display Port cables ~ IPS ~ Colors THE BAD ~ Sound? ~ Proprietary power ~ Bezel bigger than how it appears THE MEH (Could go either way) ~ Proprietary power ~ 1080p OVERALL Overall, the monitor is very good. It's 1080p and I knew that before I got it. I'm running a dual monitor system with a 2K 144Hz LED monitor and a 1080 IPS monitor. I got this originally to use with another computer, but I decided to set it up on this one first in order to compare it with the all the same hardware. Opening the box, I was impressed with how neatly it was packed. That may sound crazy, but a lot of things I open seem like they are jammed in there at strange angles or like they had someone try to create a brain teaser for the best way to get it into the box. This was neat and simple. The next thing that I appreciated is the inclusion of both an HDMI *and* Display Port cables. Unfortunately, I left the power for my old monitor plugged in because every monitor I've had since 1995 has used the same type power cord. This is totally different. I'm not a fan of proprietary cords because if you have something like a Rottweiler puppy living with you, things get chewed. It's so much easier (and cheaper) to be able to repurpose that old cord in the drawer. This seems to be a common practice now, manufacturers put a thin plastic bezel around the monitor and then use some of the screen itself as a bezel. In all, it creates about a 1/4" bezel. Putting the monitor together was simple. The vertical part of the base feels like something you could use to defend your house or hit a home run. It feels rock solid. The monitor fired right up as soon as I turned on my computer. It actually came to life faster than my main monitor. I got into my game and realized I had no sound. When I investigated, I saw the system changed my sound to the Samsung monitor. To be honest, I wonder why anyone puts sound in a monitor. The sound didn't work. I went into the settings, found "Volume" and turned it all the way up. Nothing. Doublechecking the website, it says there are no integrated speakers. That leads to another question, why is "Volume" in the GUI if it doesn't exist? There are some nice presets for the monitor to help you get the best use out of it. I checked them out until I settled on one. This monitor is bright! You can see in the pics the difference between the two. Gameplay was fast and fun. In 2k I normally average about 105-120 FPS. With the Samsung Odyssey, I have seen the counter go to about 200 FPS. Playing World of Tanks I saw no tearing whether I was playing a wheelie, brawling or observing someone else and spinning the free camera as fast as possible. I REALLY like the button placement and ease of use on this monitor. It is in the middle at the bottom and is very user friendly. My other monitor has them in a weird place and they aren't as easy to get to or navigate. ******** The Most Important Part: Would I recommend this top someone? Absolutely. It is a sharp looking monitor with a very good image quality and brightness. I have zero dead/stuck pixels and haven't seen any banding on black/dark videos like I do on my 2K monitor. The caveat, of course, is I would recommend it to someone who likes to game at 1080 or who doesn't need higher than HD. Definitely good enough for most people. In reality I would give this 4.5/5 stars because of the power cord and the volume issue. I think it's more fair to round up here because I really don't want sound and for many people the proprietary power won't even come into question.

Soild monitor with only a few downsides
24 August 2022

TL;DR: a snappy, well-equipped monitor with only a few downsides Appearance: this monitor is a very attractive one. I personally like that it looks modern and sleek without looking garish and over-done. There are a few flaws in the appearance. The bezels, especially at the bottom, are a bit on the large side. Additionally, the blue turbine-looking piece on the back doesn't light up. I like the feature and the color, but I wish there was a light in it. Lastly, the cable management is a silicone strap on the back. I wish there was a channel running down the back instead. Performance: this monitor shines in performance. I hooked up my series x and my PC to it. The auto switch functionality works well and is really convenient. I hooked up my series x and my PC to it. The auto switch functionality works well and is really convenient. The responsiveness is like nothing I've experienced as this is my first monitor that's really designed around gaming. Most I've had are for general use with some gamer-friendly features. It made my series X feel snappier since it responds much quicker than my TV does. The high refresh rate makes things look buttery smooth and with no detectable input lag. The variable refresh rate (VRR) does work, though maybe not perfectly. Seems to work better on PC games than it does with the series X. It smoothed out some frame rate issues in Elden Ring, but wasn't perfect. The biggest cons I find with the performance of this monitor are resolution, contrast, and HDR performance. While 1080p is decent, especially at 27", it would seem like there's something left on the table as many displays have moved to 1440p and 4k. The contrast leaves a bit to be desired. I believe that's because it's an IPS panel vs VA or OLED, but it could be higher. The relatively lower contrast goes hand in hand with my other complaint. The HDR did not impress on this monitor. It has HDR10, but when you have somewhat low contrast and low peak brightness, the HDR suffers. The image is very crisp and colors seem well-balanced, but I wish it just had more of that HDR pop where bright highlights actually look bright. Solid monitor, would recommend, but it's not perfect.

Superb gaming monitor!!

Samsung - 27" Odyssey G40B FHD IPS 240Hz 1ms G-Sync Gaming Monitor – Black I have to say, I truly love this FHD monitor! As you can see from the description above, the specs are great. This monitor replaces a good spec’d HP gaming monitor. However, this one, in comparison, leaves my former one in the dust. Response time is wonderful at only 1ms, and with 240Hz this baby shows no lag in any way. With both adaptive G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, you’re synchronized between your monitor and GPU to avoid choppiness, image tears or screen lag, and it uses the correct one automatically whether you have an Intel or AMD setup. With both adaptive G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, you’re synchronized between your monitor and GPU to avoid choppiness, image tears or screen lag, and it uses the correct one automatically whether you have an Intel or AMD setup. My previous gaming monitor was 24”, which has been the standard for gaming for a long time. But I’ve found that the 27” Samsung is the perfect size – you can “see” your total screen without moving your head at all or your eyes very much. I have a 32” monitor I’ve used for gaming, but it’s too large in that you have to move your eyes a lot, and even your head sometimes, to keep up with what’s going on in your game with the larger screen. Having a 27” gaming monitor also allows the objects on the screen to be a little larger (definitely noticeable from the 24” to the 27”), which is helpful in identifying objects more quickly. It also offers the option of a 21:9 ratio for an extra wide view should that be helpful to you. The Samsung 27” Odyssey G40B has HDR (High Dynamic Range), which means that, in short, it allows for improved brightness and color accuracy. The whites are whiter, and the blacks are blacker with the range of colors increased thus allowing more detail in the colors. What does all this mean? Simply that the screen has a clearer image bordering on the feel of a higher resolution. This is my impression comparing my 24” gaming monitor without HDR and the Samsung Odyssey with HDR. The Odyssey also detects when connected devices are turned on switching to the new signal automatically. Of course, you can swivel, tilt, and adjust the height of the monitor to your liking. The screen bezels are thin. It has 2 HDMI ports, 1 DisplayPort (DP), power port, and an audio-out port. As I said at the beginning, I love this monitor!

Too expensive for faulty monitor.

The display ports on the monitor just completely stopped working and so did the hdmi port, eventually I got the hdmi port back (I let it sit on my mount for almost another year before touching it again.) After trying troubleshooting it on my own, with a Samsung expert and using YouTube and threads nothing would fix my issue I was having with the menu fob button and the display port not displaying anything or working. After talking to an expert I got called and told it would cost $350 flat fee to pay for the repair, I asked if they knew what was wrong with it and they said no they have to check. So you are charging me right off the bat $350 for a repair that could be simple to fix. My brother has an Asus monitor for around the same price range that has superior colors and has lived longer then my own monitor. Paying so much for a monitor with multiple point of failures is ignorance and I fell for it. Please do your research on this monitor, it is not worth the headache or hassle you will go through, menu button unreliable trash, flickering, black screens and ports not working properly. I'll try to post a picture, but it didn't let me last time.

The picture you see of my product is hdmi cable after struggling forever to get it to post. Menu button still doesn't work properly. Tdlr:Price of monitor is not worth the faulty equipment of this monitor series. $300 repair fee or higher if something goes wrong. Please do your research of the major problems of this monitor. If you value your money look for something else in this price range. This monitor was great when it worked, I had it for a year and immediately the monitor just had a mind of its own. Fob on the monitor wouldn't open menu or would be extremely delay to open it. My monitor would randomly cut in and out and eventually just out of the blue diaplayports just stopped work. My monitor would randomly cut in and out and eventually just out of the blue diaplayports just stopped work. Even attempting to use the HDMI was terrible because it would never pick it up after turning on my pc, after time and time again attempting to troubleshoot the problem I gave up. It has been sitting for like a whole year gathering dust. When I did get help from a samsung expert everything they asked me to do failed. During this time frame my warranty just had expired (1 month from the date of expiration.) Samsung called me and said they could fix it for $300 to $350, I asked the rep what was wrong with it and they told me, we do not know we would have to check. So you are telling me I paid $700 for this monitor and you want me to send you it and pay you $300 for you to fix something that you don't know? So you are telling me if it is a simple fix I'll still get charged $300? Not worth the money at all, my brother has a Asus monitor in the same price range, actually less that has godly performance and quality. PLEASE BE ADVISE OF THIS WARNING, do your research, look it up, this monitor has MULTIPLE problems. It is absolutely not worth the price especially when they are ready to charge you $300 for a fix.
