Competent chromeOS convertible laptop at a value price

The seller had some of these new and sealed for less than half the retail price. Mine arrived relatively quickly and as promised. New, unopened in the box. After updating the OS to current builds it works fine. It isn't specked out like some of the more expensive ones, but it gets the job done. I highly recommend one of these at this price point ($225). Retail is well north of $500. It has a built in, garaged stylus and a 13mp front facing camera for Duo meetings as well as a lower res camera in the usual spot above the display in the center. Speakers are bottom mounted and not bad at all. They get decently loud and actually have a bit of bass. This unit has an Intel Pentium and the gen 1 version has a Rock Chip processor that's slower. Keyboard is surprisingly good and the built in stylus has a bunch of software optimizations built into the laptop for note taking, drawing and other functionality as well. Overall, unbeatable at $225.

I am surprised Samsung is still trying to sell this flawed machine years after its launch, particularly at the price point they're asking and with the issues it has had with randomly breaking hinges. Like many other reviewers, I was surprised when my book's left hinge randomly failed under normal-use conditions. Fortunately, the broken hinge did not crack the screen and--since it was long our of warranty--I was able to fix it myself through the use of two-part plastic epoxy poured into the cavity of the top shell behind the lower screen bezel (cracked, but repositionable). But because the left hinge is now permanently attached via plastic epoxy, I can't undo what I did. Performance-wise, the unit is not bad but it has slowed with age and randomly "locks up" a lot more than it used to. I like the touch screen feature, but will not miss this one when I find a suitable replacement.

Glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews!

I've only had this for 2 weeks. I bought it for school. I wanted something smaller then the one I have. It's easy to bring back and forth. Since I've been using this, I haven't touched my other laptop. The touch screen is great. I haven't used the pen it came with but I'm sure I'll try it sooner or later lol. I'm very happy with my purchase and I'm glad I didn't pay to much attention to the negative reviews. They almost stopped me from getting it, reading them.

Great performance, broken hinge mount
29 December 2021

i've used this for about 2 years. the pen works great, the screen looks great, the battery is great. i was hoping to use it up to its projected end of support in july 2024.last night i opened it as i always do and was greeted with a crunch. the hinge shattered the screen just like all the others. the screws on the screen side of the hinge were still screwed into metal inserts, and the inserts had grey plastic still caked around them. as i peeled the plastic away from the inserts, it just crumbled in my fingers. it appears that the plastic holding the hinge in place inside the screen portion had degraded. stay away.note: i liberated the hinge from the housing. it's pretty nifty. the duct tape replacing the hinge is not.

6 March 2023

I've has this Chromebook for at least five years now and haven't had an issue with it at all. I got some shell protectors to keep the outside from getting scratched up and a silicone keyboard protector. If I had to complain about something, it would be that I wish it was a bit faster. I don't know about the hinge issues many have (apparently) had, but mine certainly hasn't had any...and it's seen it's fair share of drops (while in it's protective case). I've traveled the world with this and have used the heck out of it with absolutely no issues.

I have been used to using a 13.3" MacBook Air every day for several years. When the MacBook took a fall and the display broke beyond repair, I went looking for a slightly cheaper and smaller option. The 10" and 11" convertible books seemed a bit too small to work on comfortably for hours at a time, so I was interested in the Samsung Chromebook XE521 for it's 12.2" HD screen and metal construction. So far I love the size, construction, fit and finish, etc. It feels like a much more expensive laptop. PROS: - Great size and feel when using. - Good construction, nice fit and finish. - Chrome OS is great. Very basic and speedy, yet does everything I really need. PROS: - Great size and feel when using. - Good construction, nice fit and finish. - Chrome OS is great. Very basic and speedy, yet does everything I really need. CONS: - My old MacBook Air spoiled me with consistently giving me 8-9 hours of use on a single charge. I haven't tested it extensively, but Samsung Chromebook XE521 has been giving me about 5 hours of medium use. It's not terrible, but is a pretty big drop off from what I am used to having. - I have also noticed apps and processes run a tiny bit slower than my old MacBook with the Core i5. Still completely adequate for basic apps and web-based work. - I found the reviews about the hinge breaking AFTER purchasing. The possibility of cracking the screen just by opening the lid worried me enough that I purchased a two year, $57 protection plan from Asurion. Now I have the peace of mind that even if my unit does break, I will have it covered. I will say the left hing feels especially stiff when opening and closing. To see if I could make it a little more smooth, I applied a few drops of very light gun oil to the hinge assembly. I didn't remove the case or anything, so I was just counting on the oil penetrating to the moving parts. I don't think it made too much of a difference, but maybe just enough to prevent the hinge from seizing up and breaking the screen? I plan to add a few tiny drops of oil every month or so (if I remember). Four stars. Would definitely be five stars if the battery life and processing speed was a bit more impressive and there were no catastrophic hinge issues potentially looming on the horizon.

I would recommend, but also buy the 4 yr warranty.
9 November 2022

Its still a good working chromebook. Except my screen came defective, where the screen didn't fit in the plastic sides. Which made it more easier for the screen to break. Just saying once you have this chromebook for TWO YEARS, you will have to buy and change the main battery because the battery will give out itself. Which I recommend when buying this chromebook, to have the 4 year warranty; it will come in handy. I really do love the chromebook, but come on, what is with all these defects.

Nice Chromebook....but a little pricey
20 July 2021

I needed a chromebook that was a 2 in 1, had a touch screen and a stylus for drawing and content creation so this device was the only one on hand that met all of my needs. In that respect, this chrome book has performed as expected. It does leave a bit to be desired as far as raw power but it is a chromebook and I won't be playing Cyberpunk 2077 on this device any time soon. All advertised features work well. The screen is surprisingly high quality. It is bright, responsive and helps mitigate another draw back that I see with the device...the price. The price is too high for a 2-3 year old device. I will blame the pandemic and massive demand for connected devices as the reason for this.To summarize, it is a competent device and despite its age it will serve you ... MoreI needed a chromebook that was a 2 in 1, had a touch screen and a stylus for drawing and content creation so this device was the only one on hand that met all of my needs. In that respect, this chrome book has performed as expected. i really liked the device for light work, but mostly for entertainment. i was going to hand it off to my child because she could use the pen for art. but left hinge randomly broke and cracked the bottom left screen glass. never dropped it. always handled it gently. used it once every 2 weeks. broke after a couple of months, after the warranty expired. geek squad said that the price to fix was equivalent to buying a new mini-laptop.

Truly Truly Innovative and Groundbreaking Samsung Chromebook Plus Convertible Laptop, with Superb Features and Components

The new 12.3-Inch Samsung Chromebook Plus Convertible Touchscreen Laptop represents the next phase in the evolution of computing devices based on the Chrome Operating System. This Samsung Chromebook Plus model is definitely a five-star computer for any individual who would regularly use both its laptop and tablet modes, who would benefit from the more vertically-oriented and webpage-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio of its display, who would regularly use its built-in pen as an adjunctive input device, and who would regularly utilize its out-of-the-box accessibility of Android Applications. However, it should be noted, that some reviewers have deducted one or more stars for its somewhat cramped and non-tactile keyboard, its lack of keyboard backlighting at this mid-level price point, its less than rich and robust speakers, and the inevitable glitches in the functionality of the newly-integrated Android Applications in a Chrome OS device. But, to be fair, these areas of concern are highly subjective, and they do not actually detract from the overall computing experience of most users. Other than the exciting prospect of having Android Applications readily available as soon as the Samsung Chromebook Plus is set up, its absolutely bright (400 nits), crisp (235 pixels-per-inch), and beautiful touch-enabled 2400x1600p Quad-HD IPS display is widely considered to be its premier feature. In fact, the 400-nit display of the Samsung Chromebook Plus is so bright, and it lights up the keyboard so effectively, that the quality of the computing experience is not appreciably lessened by the lack of keyboard backlighting. Of course, for most Chromebook users, the quality of the overall computing experience is largely determined by the power and performance of the processor. This 12.3-Inch Samsung Chromebook Plus unit is powered by the 2.0GHz Hexa-Core OP1 ARM processor, with the big.LITTLE configuration, consisting of Dual Cortex-A72 Cores, along with Quad Cortex-A53 Cores. The smaller, less powerful, and less power-consuming Cortex-A53 Cores handle routine computing tasks, whereas the larger, more powerful, and more power-consuming Cortex-A72 Cores are only activated by the operating system when they are required for a more demanding workload. This big.LITTLE power optimization technology contributes to the excellent energy efficiency of the ARM processor platform. While the Intel processors are generally more powerful and more capable than their ARM counterparts, the ARM processors are typically more power-efficient, and they deliver longer battery life and run time. The 2.0GHz Hexa-Core OP1 ARM processor, which powers the Samsung Chromebook Plus, provides sufficient capability and performance for mainstream day-to-day productivity and entertainment activities, and can support all but the most extreme levels of multitasking, without noticeable lagging or hesitation. In addition, it renders webpages rapidly, and it provides for smooth scrolling and navigation on content-rich and graphics-heavy websites. For those users who require more capability and performance, it would be prudent to wait for the availability of the Samsung Chromebook Pro, which is almost identical to the Samsung Chromebook Plus, except for the fact that it is equipped with a more powerful Intel Core m3-6Y30 mobile processor. Regarding the other essential characteristics and components of this 12.3-Inch Samsung Chromebook Plus device, it features an understated and elegant platinum silver design, ultra-thin (0.55-inch) and ultra-light (2.4 pounds) aluminum unibody construction, 4GB of system memory, 32GB of eMMC flash storage, two USB-C connectivity ports, one conveniently situated on either side of the device, each with a 5Gbps data transfer rate, a micro-SD card slot, a combined audio jack, 802.11a/c WiFi capability, 2x2 wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0, and 4K display out. The battery life of the Samsung Chromebook Plus is approximately eight hours for combined productivity and entertainment activities, which is impressive, considering the increased power requirements of its exceedingly high-resolution display. For users who absolutely must have a backlit keyboard, and who would have little need for Android Applications or a built-in pen, there are other more suitable mid-level Chromebooks that are currently available. However, this new Samsung Chromebook Plus is absolutely ideal for any Chromebook user for whom a bright, vibrant, and high-resolution display is a priority, for whom its mobile ARM processor would provide sufficient power and performance, who regularly utilizes Android Applications, who would regularly utilize its built-in pen for note-taking, drawing, and other forms of input, and whose workflow would not be compromised by its somewhat non-tactile and non-backlit keyboard. In conclusion, this new 12.3-Inch Samsung Chromebook Plus Touchscreen Laptop is an outstanding convertible computer, and it has enough superb features and components to merit a five-star rating, along with a very enthusiastic recommendation.
