Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens For Sony Alpha - 200236
These Samyang 85 mm F1.4 AS IF UMC aspherical lenses feature new UMC (Ultra Multi Coatings) which aid the very high level of light transmission, and add further resistance to flare and ghosting. The 85 mm F1.4 lenses are manual focus primes, designed to give exceptional results at wide apertures. At F1.4 great images can be obtained, which is perfect for portraiture and low light shooting. The Samyang 85 mm is also suited to cropped sensors, including APS-C / DX sensors, it gives approximately 120 mm focal length equivalent. Coupled with the fast F1.4 aperture gives an excellent portrait lens for tighter head shots or working from a distance with cropped sensor cameras, or for shooting in various low light conditions. The bokeh (the character of the out-of-focus blur) is a primary concern for professionals choosing an ultra large aperture lens for shallow depth-of-field photography. The Samyang 85 mm F1.4 lens design offers excellent bokeh quality of out-of-focus highlights when used near wide open such as at F1.4 and F2. The lens optical construction comprises of 9 lenses divided into 7 optical groups with one aspheric lens element. The Samyang 85 mm is designed with internal focusing (IF) meaning the lens does not increase in size when focusing. A further positive aspect to internal focusing is that the lens is much less likely to get dust inside.

Up to this point I have been exclusively a Nikon photographer. I just recently purchased a Sony a 7ii and wanted to try it out for portraits and headshots. Not sure if I was going to re-invest in a whole new system I decided to try an inexpensive lens that received a lot of positive reviews on YouTube. I grew up with manual lenses and felt for a non-moving subject I could possibly get sharper images with Sony’s focus assist. The Samyang manual 85mm is an amazingly sharp lens with the killer ability to shoot at f1.4! I had never used a Samyang lens prior to this, but I will definitely not overlook them again! I highly recommend this lens.

The product exceeded my expectations with its quality and sharpness. After using my 50mm f/1.4 I figured it was time to get a true portrait lens and I wanted one with a shallow focus as well. So I searched and found this perfect fit. I enjoy it and love my results. It is very sharp with very minimal chromatic aberration. There is also hardly any flare, which is nice at times but not always a positive thing with certain art styles. I would definitely recommend having this Manual focus lens as part of your portrait lenses. Excellent purchase.

Blown away by the crisp quality and professional feel of this lens. Been desiring a telephoto prime for a while and couldn't afford the Fuji 90mm, so this fit the bill. Hugely fun for walking around the city and taking photos/videos of people, buildings, etc. Subject separation is crisp and very satisfying. I love manual focus as it forces me to think more about my photos so that hasn't been a problem for me. Only gripe is that it's slightly loose on my Fuji X-H1's mount, which from my research online seems to be a common non-issue with some third party lenses. Very happy with the purchase!

I have been using this lens for a little while now and it is fantastic! It's surprisingly easy to focus eventhough it is a manual lens. Images come out incredible! Prior to this lens I've only used autofocus lenses and I don't miss them whatsoever. There are no aberrations or color fringing to be seen even when zoomed in to 8-1in Lightroom. I thought I might have issues getting sharp photos with sports but that hasn't been an issue. I've shot racecars doing well over 100mph at night with poor artificial light and still got tack sharp images. Portraits come out beautiful especially at f1.4 even better at about f2 if you like more details in the skin. It works fantastic for night and low light Photography as well. This lens literally didn't leave my camera from the day it arrived until I received the 135mm f2. This lens turned me into a huge Samyang fan boys! I'm looking forward to using their other lens offerings as well. Don't hesitate to buy this lens it's worth way more than it's selling price!
I use this lens on my OMD EM1, and have been satisfied with it since the moment it was un-boxed. This is a well constructed lens, well constructed means it is a bit heavier than your standard lens. It could be a little more sharp. However; for the price and getting f/1.4, this is a GREAT VALUE and a GREAT LENS. I recommend this lens for anyone looking for a good lens at a good price.
For Micro Four Thirds cameras, you cannot beat the value of this lens for the price. There are no other native format lenses in this focal length. This lens is part of my collection of manual focus fast prime lenses. I have owned used legacy manual lenses (e.g., Canon, Nikon) that needed an adapter, and fast lenses (< f/2) get to be expensive. This Samyang (same as Rokinon) gives you at least one more stop, and sharp across the frame even wide open at f/1.4. I also had a 4/3 version of this lens that I sold because of the expense of the adapter. I like that this lens is all in one with no need for an adapter. Because this lens is made in many versions for different mounts, this MFT version is a bit on the long side, but that is the trade off for not needing an ... MoreFor Micro Four Thirds cameras, you cannot beat the value of this lens for the price. Because this lens is made in many versions for different mounts, this MFT version is a bit on the long side, but that is the trade off for not needing an adapter. Another advantage on MFT is that this lens was designed to cover full frame, which, on MFT, provides improved sharpness at the edges for brighter apertures. This lens is well made - mostly metal and glass. The quality of the front cap and hood have been improved compared to the earlier one I owned. It is on the big and heavy side, but not much bigger or heavier than my other quality manual focus MFT Voigtlander lenses. This is the trade off for precision fast manual lenses. The controls (focus and aperture) are precise and easy to use. I noticed on this lens, just like the earlier one I owned, that the alignment of the eight aperture blades at smaller apertures is not all that symmetrical, but it does not appear to affect photos.
This lens, though a manual focus system, and heavy, provides a sharp image when used correctly. It's a real light bucket, running wide open at f/1.4, and with a 72mm phi to boot. This is a good, much less expensive version of the classic 80mm portrait lens so often used by fashion photogs, a very worthwhile bit of kit in which to invest. Frankly, for portraiture, the manual focus is a plus (on which eye do you want to focus?) and the weight adds a bit of stability. Happy to own, already productive.
Well built, but a little front heavy (to be expected). The focus ring is covered with a rubber grip and motion is well-damped and very smooth. The aperture ring moves well and the click stops are perhaps a little too firm for some but I like the positive feel of it. This is most likely the same 85mm F1.4 that Samyang sells under the Bower and Rokinon brand names for many different camera mounts. The x-mount is a non-removable extension tube that appears to be made entirely of metal, and is about 25-30mm long. Inside, there is optical ribbing intended to upset any reflections from the sensor, a very sensible approach to solving the problem. The problem is that the lens rear element has to be some distance away from the mount face, since the lens is designed for the ... MoreWell built, but a little front heavy (to be expected). The x-mount is a non-removable extension tube that appears to be made entirely of metal, and is about 25-30mm long. Inside, there is optical ribbing intended to upset any reflections from the sensor, a very sensible approach to solving the problem. The problem is that the lens rear element has to be some distance away from the mount face, since the lens is designed for the longest flange distance (most likely Nikon). The rear element of the lens can be seen to move back and forth as the focus ring is rotated but this does not necessarily mean that the dimensions of the x-mount are low-tolerance. Numerous optical issues inside the lens will strictly dictate the exact dimension that must be maintained for best imaging across the focus range. Samyang seems to have done a very good job of this. Also, the focus ring distance markings closely correspond to the actual subject distances. A standard method to manually focus is to set the aperture to the widest (F1.4), then focus, then stop down. I noticed that between F1.4 and F2.8 there is a very slight focus shift, indicating to me that my best bet is to focus this lens at the F-stop I'll be using for the shot, if possible. However, adjusting the aperture ring does not cause any motion in the focus ring. My Fuji X-E1 has a 10x focus magnifier feature that supports this kind of focusing very well. Resolution is a main concern of anyone considering this lens, so I took three test shots at a distance of about 15ft (5 meters or so) on a tripod at ISO 400 at different F-stops to explore the sharpness. I think resolution is excellent at all F-stops, although F1.4 is very slightly soft. Flatness of field is very good at all F-stops. Samyang should be quite proud of the cost vs performance of this lens. I think this lens is an excellent value and I believe it is fully up to professional standards, at least on my Fuji X-E1.
I managed to get one of these lenses because I wanted a fast aparture and have a budget. The manual focus is easy to get used to and actually quite relaxing as long as you are not in a hurry. The images this lens is producing are very crisp and the bokeh is creamy. Looking forward to taking it out for a night shoot soon.
I purchased the Samyang 85mm F/1.4 after a most enjoyable experience with the Samyang 12mm F2.I considered the highly regarded Fuji 90mm F2 but was unsure if I would use the 135mm FF equivalent enough to warrant the near 4-figure spend. I can wholeheartedly say the Samyang 85mm meets and slightly exceeds my expectations so even if I use it only occasionally I’m very pleased to have it.Manually focussing this short-telephoto is easy, even without taking the time to use Fuji focus-check due to the magnification & DOF of this FL along with the bright EVF opened up to F1.4.The build quality is as good as I could ever want. The weight is getting up there because I believe this design is based on FF construction, thus the 85mm moniker rather than 90mm. Regardless of what lens I’m using I like to use a tripod so the weight here is not a factor to me. I will however think carefully on what overseas trips it gets to go on.I hope this description and photos below help you.
