Using G-Raid Sandisk Professional with iMac 2023. Sonoma 14.5, G-Raid purchased Feb 2024. We use our mac a few times a month, not daily or in my opinion our G Raid disk situation would be worse. We have the drives mirrored and there is constant sounds coming from the unit. Over the months the noise has continued to get louder, not sure what it is doing, as we do not have a lot of data that changes, most of our use is from internet use more than anything else. We do occasionally use Preview to view some pdfs or view some photos, but nothing much. We use a Windows PC more than the iMac.

This product died on me in less than a year of use. It just stopped working. When it was working, it was fine. My only complaint is that it gets very hot but when it worked, it worked fine.My main issue is their customer support.Attempting to get customer support from WD has been the worst experience. They have awful customer service. I'm still waiting on my replacement after over two weeks of back and forth communications. Luckily, I backed up my data right before it stopped working. I can't imagine in a situation where I needed the data. They have wasted so much of my time on a basic warranty replacement that I wouldn't wish this on anyone. It has made me realize these housing units for the drives are a waste. The drive works fine. But its deficiencies compared to the old G-Raid models are readily apparent, since I'm running it alongside one of those (TB3 2-bay G-Raid). The old drive always mounts immediately on system boot, and is more responsive and snappy (both are RAID 0). The "Mirror" one never mounts on boot. I always have to manually turn it on and off before the system will recognize that the device is even there, much less boot. This is incredibly aggravating. Between the cheap-feeling plastic case, and the unreliable power performance, I am not impressed.Western Digital: You are throwing away a great brand with the corner-cutting and cheap-ifying of G-Tech products. I have G-Tech drives all over the place, I have relied on them for years. But between this experience and the killing of support for the older G-Tech utilities and drivers, I'm probably not going to ever buy another G-Tech or SanDisk product from you. (Utility gripe: In order to perform any maintenance on my 8-bay G-Speed Studio XL - which I love, btw - I have to pull out an old intel Mac in order to run the utility, and to just mount the device on my Silicone mac, I am running a Pegasus driver workaround. Gimme a break, it's a great product that still runs like a champ, and your failure to maintain support for it will absolutely impact my decision about whether to ever buy another large RAID product from you again).
The price is worth it for the package. Such a simple device to build redundancy, and keeps my desk neat. It's a pretty quiet device, and as there is always a trade of with temperature and fans, I think it's exactly right. The Mag SSD is plenty fast to edit video, and if you really needed 3000mb/s, the magstation is actually not all that expensive and can daisy chain on top. Furthermore, buying this device from B&H gives me some serious sanity and support in the unlikely case one of these ultrastar drives ever does go down. For the independent professional, this RAID Mirror solved some important workflow issues. 100% Worth the tidiness.
I’m an independent content creator working with large 4k files, which I edit in premiere. When I ran out of space on my G-Raid drive, I landed on this as a replacement for a couple reasons. First is the ability to edit from the SSD and use the large capacity spinning disks mainly as archive. I also like that these SSD mags are usable for recording media to from certain cameras, which could be a great workflow for me in the future… record ProRes to the mag and then also edit from it, all the while only needing to plug in one device to the computer. I shoot on a Varicam LT, so I don’t currently have a need for that, but I can see shooting on one of Panasonics newer mirrorless cameras in the future and utilizing that ability. I’ve only had the unit for a short while, but so far it’s performed well and improved my workflow for file management. I do think that for certain folks, an NAS might make more sense, but for the scale of my work, this does the job just fine.
This disk has high capacity, even with RAID 1, and works as advertised. No hassles in setting up the disk and it behaves well with the MAC OS (i.e., sleeps when it is supposed to, etc.)... Under normal usage the disk is more quiet than my other raid drives, which is good if you have it in your workspace. Unit has rugged packaging, good read/write speed, and just works. I'd recommend this drive to anyone who needs RAID 1 storage.
I purchased the 44TB model, it seemed like the perfect edition to my workflow. I edit a project locally using my internal raid, and then move everything over to this box (project, footage, etc). It's not blazing fast but much more accessible than pulling something out of cold storage. 44TB is a nice amount of space to keep recent projects handy. Everything was going great for a week, then The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. The fun part is that I hadn't backed up a few things before moving them over (I should have known). It looks great on my desk, but it's just a paperweight now, thankfully B&H is great about returns. I'm not sure if the issue is with the SanDisk hardware controller or the WD HDs but either way I'm really disappointed.
Having had excellent reliability on the over 100 G-Tech GRaids drives we have, we have not had the same experience with the SanDisk iterations. Of the five 24TB's we bought, 1 died after a couple months and a second was dead right out of the box. We buy drives in pairs and 1 is an exact duplicate of the other as a data backup. They are formatted RAID 0 for speed.
Based on the product description, I was optimistic that this would be a workhorse. Not at all. Perhaps this would be a good backup for file storage, but you can hardly work off of it. Every time I save, it freezes for a couple of minutes before it finishes saving. My entire workflow is disrupted by its lack of speed. When I go to open a file, it takes a couple of minutes to even few the files in a directory, then you click on a folder, and it takes a couple of additional minutes to see the contents of that directory. It is miserable. Don't get it if you need to work on anything.
