For cold press, it's a toss up between Arches and Saunders Waterford. But this is really, really nice. For 90 lb hot press, this is hands down the best. It makes wonderful sketchbooks because you can use practically anything on it from graphite to pen and ink to wet media. I don't like the sizing on Fabriano Artistico since they changed it but I was able to pivot to this and I like it a lot.

The high white cold press 140 lb is the absolute best watercolor paper I have tried after 3 years of painting. It is textured but smoother than most for ink and nib calligraphy. I love the surface for watercolor painting. I usually combine calligraphy and watercolor so this is paper is the sweet spot for me. The only trouble is it is not a readily available paper. Dick has sent me paper twice with smudges. The first time I allowed it. This last time it was so bad it was unusable. I called and asked for a replacement. Customer servive was great and we'll see if the third time is a charm. It is unfortunate that I am losing trust in the place that sells this paper most affordably.

I am most comfortable using Fabriano rough watercolor paper for the way I work, which seems to always need a certain amount of lifting and scraping. However, I also like to branch out and test available competing papers periodically and mix things up a bit. So I purchased 5 full sheets of Saunders rough. After working through 2 paintings I find it quite durable, it can take a good scrubbing. It doesn't buckle too much when flooded. It doesn't seem to absorb the paint quite as smoothly as either Arches or Fabriano but handles successive glazes really well. I would give it's color lifting behavior about equal with Arches but not as well as Fabriano.Saunders is a highly esteemed paper and has a strong following among watercolorists, but I will probably stay with ... MoreI am most comfortable using Fabriano rough watercolor paper for the way I work, which seems to always need a certain amount of lifting and scraping. I continue to be impressed with the Saunders Waterford watercolor paper. I was advised by other artists to try it after using Arches paper for many years. I prefer Saunders Waterford for its durability when making changes. It is also easier to lift color back than many papers. I waited a little extra time to receive it, but I had a full sheet project that it would be ideal for! #sweepstakes
This paper out preforms all others in my opinion. It causes the paint to house in a way I can't replicate on arches or fabriano. Paints lift beautifully, colors look vibrant, the sizing is perfect for me and I never feel like the paper is fighting against the technique. In comparison Saunders Waterford is like painting on a high quality canvas and Arches is like painting on gessoed cardboard. If you are the type to abuse your paper and needlessly scrub at paper then buy Arches it will hold up to that sort of abuse. If you however lift with finess and don't abuse paper this is a superior choice in my opinion. I switched to Saunders Waterford 13yrs ago and haven't wanted another paper since.
I've been looking for a good small block to replace my Fabriano blocks, which seem sometimes to have sizing issues. This paper is great. It's taken a lot of water- I work pretty wet with my watercolor. I can move the color washes across the paper easily. I've really liked how it's taken the media so far.
I honestly thought I had been sent the wrong product after trying this paper with watercolors. I mostly use Arches cold press and Canson moulin de roy, which I really enjoy. I bought this just to try something new. I was shocked at how aggressively the paper buckled at the slightest touch of water - something that seems really unacceptable in a watercolor paper. Colored washes also bleed and feather out in a weird way, something I've never seen with any other paper intended for use with watercolor. The paper eventually dries flat, but the colors appear dull and washed-out. It's almost like this paper wasn't meant to stand up to watercolor. I was shocked at all the positive reviews, and I will not be buying this product again.
The paper is excellent- I've purchased the hot pressed sheets as I like all of details to appear on my artwork, including stamp sentiments.I apply layers of coloured stains Infusions using lots of water, and the paper absorbs all without compromising the quality of the paper, making the art piece beautiful.Taking into account the product quality, the way it works with stains and water, the final effect of the art, and the price, the paper is the best value on the market.
This was my first time using Saunders. I found it difficult at first because the texture is quite different from Arches. I jokingly kept saying it was like painting on toilet paper...Soft and pulpy. Arches stands up to lifting color out without getting "scarred", the Saunders got "pilled and frayed". I don't think this will replace Arches for me personally. I bought quite a bit of it so I will keep trying to work with it but so far I have found it quite average. I am not a fan of how it rapidly absorbs the paint. I don't like pigment to swim in sizing on the surface but I like a little time for colors to mingle on the surface. The only benefit I can see is leaving white sparkles on the page is easy with the rough texture. However with a light touch, I achieve this ... MoreThis was my first time using Saunders. with arches and fabriano and maybe whatman, waterford paper is great for watercolor. It is slightly whiter than arches natural color, and the not surface has more tooth than arches, but like all papers, you use it for the effects it can make. Just the sheet itself is beautiful, with the imprint of the mill. I tell all my students to try different papers, but with the cost of paper, few actually do so.
