While the performance of these shoes on slab and slight overhangs is decent, the durability and comfort is severely lacking. The velcro straps are a very poor design and will slip and loosen as you climb. The shoes are uncomfortable over any extended period of time and very hot. I found myself taking them off every chance I got.

Bought these as my first shoes 3 weeks in to starting bouldering. I'm a size 12.5 mens and got an 11 2/3 (very weird sizing) and found them super snug for my first climb. I was worried they would be too painful and even tried to return them, but MEC didn't have a larger size. I kept the size 11 2/3 and I'm glad I did because they broke in very nicely within two climbs. No more pain while walking and surprisingly comfortable. The velcro straps are super convenient but don't cinch very tight. That being said, if you tuck the tongue well enough you can get a VERY snug fit. Plus I can take my shoes off and put them back on faster than my friend with lace ups can take off ONE shoe. Here's the problem though: It's been three months and the leather upper has broken in a ... MoreBought these as my first shoes 3 weeks in to starting bouldering. Seriously, I can get my fingers in behind my heel. Despite the loose fit these shoes are still performing wonderfully and I can climb for 2 hours with no discomfort at all! They grip the wall well (when I slip it's my own bad technique) and have pretty good support. Being so loose they have started to upturn in the toe, so I'm looking for a new pair of shoes to match my climbing style. If you don't know how you like to climb or are looking for a first pair I HIGHLY recommend these. I had no issue with my skin being dyed blue, and they were the right price :)

Picked these up a year ago for my first pair of shoes. I travel + climb frequently in various environments, indoors and outdoors. They've held up really well through it all. Bouldering in San Diego or Bishop to sport routes in Smith Rock to multi hour gym sessions, these shoes carried me through comfortably. Definitely need a resole soon, but for most beginners I would expect a longer lifespan. Gonna send em off and pick up a more aggressive pair, and keep these as my comfy shoes. The leather really does break in well and help because I have wide feet. So if you want a snug fit that lasts don't be afraid of getting a smaller size. Fit sizing based on how they feel once broken in.

MEC staff did a good job matching my foot to the right shoe. I am a new climberand have a narrow foot and heel, normal arch. I wear a size 8 running shoe and purchased a size 40.5, which is not quite a half size smaller. I did try a 40 but couldn't make it through even one climbing session. MEC exchanged them, no problem! After 3 months, the shoes still fit well. The forefoot stretches but the length does not. I find that if I keep the forward velcro very tight to keep my toes back and heel locked in nicely. I only use the shoe for bouldering twice a week. The full last (plastic internal support) really helps a new climber stand on some smaller toe holds. The full last (plastic internal support) really helps a new climber stand on some smaller toe holds. The rubber on the sole is harder than other shoes comparing it to the LaSportiva Tarantula and Evolv Defy that my kids wear (both adults). That makes smearing a little harder but its improving as the shoe breaks in and part of it is likely needing better footwork on my part as well. MEC recommends this shoe for top rope first and bouldering third. Toe and heel hooks are great. The velcro straps are a little longer than necessary when the shoe breaks in but that's not an issue really.
This was my first pair of climbing shoes, so this review is from the perspective of a beginner. I normally wear a 9 or 9.5 in street shoes, so I went with an 8.5 for these. At first it was a bit tight, but after a few climbs they broke in and now they're quite comfortable. I've been climbing at least once a week for several months and they still look brand new! Would definitely recommend to someone who wants a beginner set of shoes that should last a while.
Initially I bought these as my first pair of climbing shoes since I am a fresh beginner. I tried them out at a climbing gym but it became a bit too painful after a while. I did a half size down from my street size as recommended but it was too narrow in the toe box area for me. Even when I tried the true to size in these, it was still too narrow. I eventually settled for the La Sportiva Tarantula instead as it had a roomier toe box.As far as the quality goes, it is very well made for a entry level shoe. All the materials seemed high quality and these shoes are manufactured in Italy so you know you are getting quality. The support with these shoes are great for a beginner like me that don't really know how to use some of the more softer, advanced shoes.
Great pair of shoes! For reference, I purchased these as my first pair about 1.5 years ago. I used them as my go to shoe (1 year) before splitting them with a second pair (6 months). Overall, I'm really happy I bought this pair and often recommend it to beginners (as long as it fits!). A few things to highlight:- I really like the thicker rubber (5mm). As a beginner, I started climbing indoors and had really messy foot work (just constant scraping either on the holds or by textured indoor walls). Despite the crazy beating these shoes have taken, the rubber has held up pretty well and I think this is particularly important for beginners who are starting off -- you don't necessarily want a super soft shoe that's gonna get destroyed really quickly. Despite the crazy beating these shoes have taken, the rubber has held up pretty well and I think this is particularly important for beginners who are starting off -- you don't necessarily want a super soft shoe that's gonna get destroyed really quickly. To date, most of the rubber is intact - it's definitely worn down in the toe box, with only the very tip being completely gone.- This is a stiffer shoe. On one hand, because of this, they aren't the most sensitive shoe (you can't really "grasp" or "feel" some holds as easily, especially smaller ones). However, the stiffness of the shoe does make it a lot more supportive. Looking from the perspective as a beginner, I think it was more important for me to start with a supportive shoe. I didn't really have strong feet/built feet muscles, and I also have ridiculously flat feet, so I don't think I would have fared well with a softer shoe. If you're looking for something a bit more sensitive or "sticky", this probably isn't the shoe for you.- I do like that the shoe is made out of leather. It breathes a lot better than some of the synethetic materials. That said, you will have to factor in that it does stretch out a little bit. It's not a whole lot, but the overall shape changes a bit more than the synethetic fibre shoes would. This can also be a good thing, in that the shoe will really mold to your feet shape.- In terms of performance, as I mentioned, its weakness seemed to be on smaller holds that you really need to smear on/cover as much surface area of your foot on the hold. Smearing on the walls were fine, but some holds were a bit tricky. Again, I think it was more to do with its stiffness and inability to really "wrap" around some holds. That said, if you ever had to edge on a hold, it worked quite well.- I've climbed indoors (roped and bouldering) and outdoors (roped) with the shoe, and the shoe didn't fail me. I still use it today as a warm-up shoe and it works well.Overall, it's a very nice all-around shoe! If it fits you, I'd definitely recommend it as a starter.
Thought it might help to have a longer-timeframe perspective on these shoes, since most reviews are from a few days or weeks after purchase.I got into climbing about a year ago and these are the first shoes I bought. They have served me really well! They've grown with me over months and months of typically twice-weekly indoor climbing and bouldering. I'm now in the 5.11 range top-rope, V4-V5 bouldering, with a little outdoor bouldering too, and in those contexts I have no complaints.Specific pros:- I'm quite happy with the grippiness of the sole rubber. I like doing balance-intensive problems that require precise, secure, flexible, and often strange foot placement, and these work well for that. I like doing balance-intensive problems that require precise, secure, flexible, and often strange foot placement, and these work well for that. The toe rubber is also really durable and I've found it great for toe hooking.- The leather definitely loosens up over time, but it has also conformed to my foot more as that happens. And as the shoe has loosened, I've been able to tighten the velcro straps more, which gives an even better fit in many ways.- Over 3 hours of gym climbing, these shoes stay comfortable for me... but at this point a big part of that is that they're broken in and fit my foot well. Personally I think that comfort / fit also helps my climbing. Also, I tend to start with them a little looser and then tighten the straps over the course of a session as the material warms up.- In case it helps others with sizing, when I bought these shoes, they were tight enough that my toes pressed firmly up against the front with just a little bit of curl.Potential cons:- My foot's heel doesn't stick out that much (or maybe I just have a thick ankle), so there's a tiny bit of space between my heel and the back of the shoe. At first I was concerned about that, but if I'm about to start a problem with heel hooking involved, I just make sure they're securely tightened and they work great. But if you also have shallow heels, take note.- Once you're at the point where you're pulling the velcro straps firm and tight, the strap brackets can sometimes dig into your foot. This generally doesn't bother me but there are a few times when I've noticed it, and it could be more painful for others.Durability & final verdict:After 10 months of use, my Origins are still in great shape. There's no serious wear in the rubber, and the leather is simply broken in, *not* damaged or wearing out.I'm starting to consider getting a more aggressive and/or lace-up shoe just to try the difference, but I could easily keep climbing and growing with these shoes for the foreseeable future. And honestly, whenever I go to try on other shoes, it's hard to find another pair -- except maybe more expensive Scarpas -- that feel like they will fit and wear as well as these.
I'm still unsure if I made the right choice buying these.I usually wear 9.5 shoes but decided to order these in EU43.5, and my heels still hurt every time I wear them. The grip feels inadequate. My feet often slip off of the holds, which did not happen previously with rental shoes. I'm hoping they will get better as I use them, but so far I'm a bit disappointed.
I just started indoor climbing and bouldering. I noticed that Scarpa runs small when I tried them on at the store. My shoe size is usually a 37/37.5 (6.5/7) so I ordered a 38 (7.5). They fit really snug and comfortably without socks so I probably should have bought the 38.5 since I wanted to wear socks with them. I heard that they break in after a while so I hope I can wear socks with them in the future because the 38.5 are no longer available :/ My toes are not tightly curled up in this size but they are also not all the way flat so I feel that it’s a perfect in between for me. It has a super good arch support! My feet keep getting suctioned and make funny farting noises lol I don’t think this size would have fit me if I had a wide foot, though.
