Just bought this from Cabela’s (2hr drive from home) and now I know why it was the last one on the shelf….IT’s BROKEN. The pin that should hold the handle in place doesn’t work since it can’t take any pressure at all. It simple releases down and keeps collapsing.

Will be returning. Too heavy and couldn't get bottom of handle open. Good idea, but didn't quite work. Too bad.

Yes, it's functional. If you're digging cat holes, it'll do the trick. The metal blade digs through just about everything with reckless abandon, which is handy when you're in a hurry. But no, it's not super refined. The handle rattles around in the blade. The telescopic push button thingies are hard to press, especially with gloves. And the cap for the stash tube in the end of the handle is really really hard to remove. Don't put your toilet paper in there and expect quick access to it. As a bonus, it comes with a nice little carrying sack perfectly tailored to its svelt silhouette.

Great design but let down a little by the fit and finish. Not the usual quality i’ve come to expect from sts. The mechanism for locking the blade in place and the cap for the compartment are both a bit fiddley and rough.
First of all, received a different colour to what I ordered. Not a massive deal but just a little annoying. Now onto the product itself.. Not sure if I recieved a dud but the little spring loaded button to extend and retract the spade component is very difficult to depress. It’s stiff and cannot be pressed in with one hand so every time we use the trowel we need to get a sturdy stick to press the little button and it takes great force to use and put away. We also have the same issue for the handle where toilet paper can be stored rendering that compartment effectively useless. It would have been better to buy a regular garden trowel for cheaper as the collapsible trowel is not child friendly at all.
An ideal tool to have with your outdoor toiletry kit. The metal spade makes it easier to dig even with hard ground - compared to the plastic version. It's light and packs small, that it easily fits in my outdoor toiletry bag. It has many nice design touches, like the hollow handle (to use as storage for a lighter, matches or wipes), and it's packing mechanism. While other reviewers mentioned they found it hard to press the metal button to unpack/pack the trowel, I don't have this issue. The included soft bag is needed.
I like the comfort of this trowel while digging compared to the other one I have. That one always hurt my hand. It’s light and durable while digging through small roots. I did have a small problem at first with my handle coming apart, but the customer service team is wonderful at Sea to Summit and a brand new one was sent to me quickly. I love a company that stands behind their products and takes care of their customers!
I bought this thinking the fold away design was an awesome way to reduce the size of my kit. And it is pretty neat. The hollow handle is pretty useless as nothing fits in there. But when it came time to do the number 2, the blade of this thing was useless. It's flat and dull, and wouldn't break the ground, let alone get through the tree roots and such. I do not recommend this trowel at all.
I've used the alloy pocket trowel for years. I have a medical condition that requires me to dig a cat hole at least 2 times per day in the back country. This tool makes fast work out of digging cat holes, even in very tough ground. The handle is very comfortable and the stuff bag keeps my other toiletries clean. The hollow handle allows me to store emergency toilet paper. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the locking pin doesn't work very well. It gets stuck and is hard to push. I fixed this by replacing it with a plastic version I got from a pool supply store for swimming pool poles. This may become a problem if it breaks in the future. I'd like to see a better locking system or improved materials from S2S.
Love this trowel, I roll up a mini-roll of backup TP in the handle. I've actually owned this for 10 years. I've been replacing my gear with lighter materials and it occurred to me that this could possibly be mad of titanium, the trowel is heavy (relatively) and it didn't make the cut in my latest weight assessment because it's not "essential" and weighs too much. I'd love to see a titanium version of this.
