I recently took this out on an 8 night trip in the Sierra Nevada. It got to experience some good downpours as well as many starry nights. I had been using a tarptent protrail as my solo tent, but one thing that I was lacking is the ability to star gaze from within the tent - so if it was buggy or with a chance of rain in the night - no stars. This was the primary use case I wanted to solve for in my next solo tent - but without sacrificing too much additional weight. This tent overall delivered on that promise. The tent pitched quick and taut and I used the stargazing mode almost every night- being able to have one side of the rain fly snug when you wanted privacy or wind blocking from a single direction was another nice feature. The only negatives I have are: There is not a good loop/strap built in to hold the rainfly when you wrap it up in stargazing mode. There is an attached elastic loop and toggle but the location did not seem to be practical for any use. I sort of tucked it into rainfly vent opening or rolled it over the top of the cross bar and for the most part did not have any trouble with it flapping away. This might be an issue in larger winds. I will bring along a tie next time to mitigate this issue, but am really surprised it did not come with a good attachment point given this is one of the main tent features. Second - I did try the dry setup as I had a good downpour going one of the days I was setting up camp. I ultimately got it done but the dry setup was VERY challenging in this tent given the semi-freestanding design - I think this feature would work better in the freestanding model, but the instructions on the package do not differentiate between the tent models. Overall thought I really like this tent and would recommend it to anyone not too obsessed with light weight (though this tent is not heavy by any means!) who are looking for a more feature-rich experience.

I've been looking for a 3 season one man tent and finally found it. This Alto TR1 plus is very well designed and is made with quality material. I took it to the Mt. Antero region on Colorado at around 12,000'. I was much warmer than in the Gossemer gear tent I tried earlier this year. I really like the peak venting system.The modular stuff sack system is functional, but a little over-engineered for me. It might make more sense on the 2 person version since you have someone to share the load with.

This is a great tent for anyone looking to cut pack weight and free up space. The compartmentalized stuff sack allows you to divide the tent up to utilize smaller spaces in your pack, freeing up more space in your main compartment. The tent poles and grommets are all color-coded, making the setup really easy. The unique shape of the footprint provides extra room inside for personal items that you want to keep with you over night. This is an all-around awesome tent, especially for those that are trying to achieve minimum possible pack weight.
Used this tent for the first time on an AT overnight. It's the lightest tent I've owned and doesn't take up much space in my pack. Took a bit to get it tensioned once set up but it worked as advertised. It's big enough to change clothes in and no problem stretching out to sleep (I'm 6'), I like the extra head room. The vestibule is functional. Only had a light rain shower so don't know how livable it would be in heavy rain. Overall, so far, so good.
Overall, the tent itself seems incredibly well-designed, and overall I prefer it to the Nemo Hornet 1 it replaces. But there are some really weird failures and poor design decisions that are frustrating.What I love: Lots of head space, so even though the tent is narrow, it doesn't feel as small as it is. The interior walls are taut, not saggy like many tents. Even though I haven't dealt with a nasty storm in it yet, the taut pitch and shape means I'm confident that it will handle summer storms well. It's also vaguely ridiculous to have 2 stuff sacks (4 total including the stakes and pole set) for such a small 1 person tent. After spending $400 on a 1 person tent (OUCH!) I'm not happy about spending more money on a more appropriate stuff sack. I was excited about the concept of the stuff sacks working as interior pockets, but in the real world they are just something to knock your head against because they are in the wrong place. The light bar is a cool idea but a failure in practice because the snaps are REALLY hard to work, and when you try to put in or take out your headlamp, the light bar snaps fail.What's merely annoying: Every cord is grey including on the grey stakes, so losing stakes is far too easy. Why not make the cord a bright color? Because the rainfly door doesn't tie back to a pole, the door just kind of hangs loose, which is a bit annoying in a breeze or wind.There's also the fact that I shared many of these concerns directly with Sea To Summit in an email shortly after receiving the tent over a month ago, but have never received a response one month later, which makes me question their customer service.
I brought this because of the promise of less weight and 3 plus season advertisement. Please do not buy this. Walls are to thin and there was so much condensation when I used it in a 30 degree weather even when the vents are open. Worst, the pole broke and I had to do some repairs in the middle of my trip.
I was trying to like this tent because of its 3 plus season versatility. However, it failed me twice last year in my Big Sur and Sierra trip. The pole broke and had to do emergency repairs. Good thing moosejaw has a great return policy when such issues occur.
1) should have made it freestanding for 2 more ounces, having to stake out the two edges for a 1P tent considering the target audience is 100% no buy. 2) for the cost the nemo the NEMO Dragonfly 1p is currently top dog. even the bikepack version is better then this one. 3) how difficult would it have been to add interior mesh pockets of various types. 4) to setup this thing is pain in the butt...1P target audience is typically hiking long days and looking for quick efficient no mess no fuss setup. Anyways lot more things that make this 1P tent at its price point a pretty bad buy. Sorry sea to summit I do like your other products but I would suggest get a lot of feedback work on multiple iterations ...you can do way better.

But I had yet to find a solution that was lightweight AND provided protection in a wide range of weather.I think I’ve finally found the answer.The Alto TR1Plus is semi freestanding, so one collapsible pole plus stakes give it structure and ample headroom. I love that I can set up the fly first to keep me dry as I set up the tent itself — and take down my tent under the fly (and keep it dry!) on wet mornings. Lots of configuration options provide ample ventilation, even with the thicker inner fabric of the Plus. (Which I expect will let me actually be — dare I say? — comfortable in winter ...
